Timothy Denny is the November student of the month for the School of Business. He is from Woodridge, Virginia which is about three hours away from Murfreesboro. He is the first to attend college, with a young-er brother and an older sister. Tim sent his game films to a tal-ent scout when he was looking for a college to continue his football ca-reer. He was recruited by Coach Place to become a member of the Hawks football team, first visiting Chowan in February of his senior year in high school. In addition to his achievements on the football field, he achieved academically. Tim states that he has learned a lot from his classes and his experienc-es here. Tim’s major is Business Admin-istration with a Concentration in Ac-counting and a Minor in Manage-ment. When asked why he chose business, he says he always envi-sioned himself as a business pro-fessional, initially thinking he would concentrate in Information Systems.

After his first accounting class, Mrs. Williams told Tim that he should be an accountant. He didn’t believe her, but after his freshman year, he was convinced. His favorite classes are the accounting classes with Mrs. Williams because she is so passionate about teaching that it makes you want to learn. One of the best things about be-ing at Chowan is that his schedule

is so tight with being a student ath-lete that he has to stay focused on football and class. Of course, Tim states that this is good and bad because it does not leave him time for a social life while he is at school. During the summers he has a bit more free time, though he also works on his physical condi-tioning and holds part time jobs. Tim says that Chowan has been a good decision for him. He is a member of Sigma Beta Delta and Alpha Chi, and has been on both President’s List and Dean’s List. His advice to upcoming freshman would be: “Don’t quit when things get hard. Push through and it will all work out for the best.” Tim graduates in May 2016 and his career choices are split between becoming a college football coach or going into the accounting field. We know that he will succeed in whatever endeavors he chooses.

Good Luck Tim!

Marendy Cannon - December 2015 Student of the Month

Natalie Riddick, a Sales Coordi-nator for Vietri, Inc.spoke to students in Patsy Taylor's Retail Merchandis-ing and Selling classes on Tuesday, November 24. Vietri offers fine, ex-clusively Italian ceramic dinnerware and decor for the home and garder, decorating and dining, handmade and hand painted in Italy

Natalie is a native of Ahoskie, a graduate of Meredith College, and the younger sister of Elizabeth Rid-dick Davis, Chowan University's Di-rector of Annual Fund.

Riddick Visits Selling Classes

December’s student of the month, Marendy (Mindy) Cannon, is a bubbly young woman who is a na-tive of nearby Severn, NC. She graduated third in her class at North-ampton High School,. While in high school, Mindy was voted MVP of the varsity volleyball team. She chose Chowan because it was close to home, and she hoped to continue her volleyball career. The volleyball dream was sidelined, however, due to injury. She and her family are close and active in their church. At Chowan, Mindy is a senior pursuing a B.S. in Business Admin-istration with a concentration in Ac-counting and a minor in Manage-ment. Mindy has excelled academi-cally while at Chowan. She has consistently been on the Dean’s List or President’s List every semester during her tenure at Chowan. Mindy notes that because of the smaller class sizes, students and faculty at Chowan interact closely in the classroom. She also appreciates that faculty are helpful outside of the classroom.

Mindy currently enjoys working at Jentry White CPA, an accounting firm in nearby Jackson, NC, where she is a bookkeeper. She plans to do a spring internship with the firm as well, where she will be doing tax-es. She enjoys being able to work in her chosen field. After graduation, Mindy hopes to work full time at Jentry White CPA or perhaps at the peanut company where most mem-bers of her family are employed.

Hobbies for Mindy include gar-dening and making jams. Mindy has a one acre garden that keeps her busy in the summer. Produce from the garden is usually given away to others.

For fun, she enjoys cooking, cleaning (imagine that!), singing at her church, and four-wheeling. Her six month old lab puppy named Mae provides lots of enjoyment

On a personal note, Mindy says she has been most influenced by her parents. Her dad gives advice and talks with her about issues, and her mom always has inputs and feed-back. Mindy’s favorite Bible verse, Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” should serve her well in the future as she navigates life. Her advice to other students is to “Read! You’re not going to understand unless you read. YouTube if you can’t under-stand reading.”

The School of Business wishes you the best in all your future en-deavors, Mindy! Congratulations on being selected as the CU School of Business Student of the Month for December, 2015!

The Elevator Pitch Competition held October 23, 2015 between the Sports Studies and Physical Edu-cation Department (SSPE) and the School of Business (SB) featured students from the SSPE 479 Semi-nar course and the BUS 390 Busi-ness Colloquium course. Each participant had 90 seconds to re-spond to the prompt, “we’ve en-joyed reviewing your resume, now tell us more about yourself.” Student talks were rated on content and presentation by a pan-el of three judges: Debbie Richard-son, Senior Associate Commission-er of the Atlantic 10 Athletic Confer-ence; Jamie Johnson, owner of

Ace Hardware in Ahoskie and Murfreesboro; and Alan Scott, Di-rector of Career Services at Chow-an University. First place was awarded to Timothy Denny, a senior Business Administration major with a Con-centration in Accounting. Second place went to Alisha Mobley, a sen-ior Business Administration major with a Concentration in Manage-ment. Third place winner was Dusty Biggs, a senior Business Administration major with a Con-centration in Information Systems. The rematch elevator pitch com-petition will be held in the spring.
