I am sure he will do a fine job, and to our outgoing paymaster who wanted more time to devote to her family, I thank you for a job well done, and for working with Mike to turn over a smooth run- ning position so that the Detachment doesn’t miss a beat in achiev- ing its goals. Please help and volunteer to do a few hours helping us run a smooth Convention, and provide a great time for the rest of the States League members who have traveled to our fine city to meet and enjoy the camaraderie of Ma- rines. Even if it’s only a few hours it will help. You will make new friends and are welcome to attend meetings and training classes also. Guss Kissee will also be sending out notice that we need fire watch at the Barracks for a rental that weekend, so if you can’t help at the Convention, please think about doing a fire watch stint. I think that spring is here, eyes are watering and I am sneezing so I am pretty sure. And it is raining.

With spring comes new life in the world and a renewal of old things. In this Detachment this year we have a group of officers who have each come up with a plan of what they want to do for the year as their duties in the office they hold. I will be publishing their goals and I want you each to read them and see what you can do as a member to help them achieve their goals.

One officer who has his hands full, is the new Adjutant-Paymaster Mike Wukitsch, who has taken on the new duties as Paymaster. This is probably the most important officer position in the League, so I wish him well in his endeavors, and I hope you all do too. I am sure he will do a fine job, and to our outgoing paymaster who wanted more time to devote to her family, I thank you for a job well done, and for working with Mike to turn over a smooth run-ning position so that the Detachment doesnt miss a beat in achiev-ing its goals.

Two months from now we will be hosting the Department summer convention, on June 13-15. Beth Troxell will be calling to get vol-unteers to help out in various duties. Please help and volunteer to do a few hours helping us run a smooth Convention, and provide a great time for the rest of the States League members who have traveled to our fine city to meet and enjoy the camaraderie of Ma-rines. Even if its only a few hours it will help. You will make new friends and are welcome to attend meetings and training classes also. Guss Kissee will also be sending out notice that we need fire watch at the Barracks for a rental that weekend, so if you cant help at the Convention, please think about doing a fire watch stint.

Remember you will get out of your membership what you put into it! So do some small or big part, and get to know us all and make new friends.

Commentary by Jim Wade Central Division Aide de Campe

And to the Republic for which it stands, The basis of a Republic is that all people have an inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Inalienable is defined as that which cannot be taken away or transferred. I am hoping to define in the shortest way, exactly what a Republic is. Our Founding Fathers recognized that with no government, a state of anarchy would erupt. They knew that a democracy, which is best de-scribed as decision making by the masses of the whole people (mob-rule) can work in small groups like a family but not in large popula-

tions. The founders were determined that the whole people should elect their own representatives, and then require those representatives to study the issues and make their laws on that basis. The power base would be split into three branches, the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judicial. The Constitution was designed to provide a check and balance to government, allowing for peaceful means of maintaining and restoring freedom in the event one branch becomes power hungry and abusive. The Right to petition and redress government for grievances allows us this peaceful course of action as opposed to another revolution, unless we, the people are ignored. Back in 1928, the Department of Defense printed a Defense Technical manual (TM-2000-25) which warned of the dangers of a Democracy. It explained the advantages of our Republican form of government, stating that it results in statemanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment and pro-gress. A Republic is a delicate vessel which holds the ingredients necessary for Liberty and Free-dom to exist. My family came to America, into the Virginia territory in 1611. I believe the torch of Freedom was passed from father to son with explicit instructions on how to keep the tree of Liberty growing from generation to generation. When I look at my elected Senators and Representatives of today, I am very disappointed to see that they are violating their oath of office daily. I do not call this Respectable. I am certain that our Constitution and Bill of Rights are fine, just as written. But daily, our Con-gress seems to ignore the document that binds them to follow the set rule of law. There are political parties other then the Republican and Democrat, both of which are expert at fin-ger pointing to blame the OTHER PARTY for all ills. Problem is that both parties are the ones who voted to spend, spend, spend us into bankruptcy. My final instructions if you truly care about our Nation, our pledge, our Freedom is to study the Constitution, Bill of Rights and especially the Declaration of Independence. Read the writings of our Founders and you will find that they were very intelligent men of vision. My most sincere prayer is that you will keep the torch of Freedom burning brightly in your self and encourage others to do the same. In Liberty True American James (Jim) Wade

3 April 1945: On Okinawa, Marines of the III Amphibious Corps continued to make good progress all along their front, clear-ing Zampa Misaki and seizing the Katchin Peninsula, thus effectively cutting the island in two. By this date (D+2), III AC ele-ments had reached objectives thought originally to require 11 days to take.

5 April 1947: Five Marine guards were killed and eight wounded when attacked by Communist Chinese raiders near the Hsin Ho ammunition depot in Northern China. This last major clash between Marines of the 1st Marine Division and Communist forces occurred shortly after withdrawal and redeployment plans from China were issued for the 1st Division and 1st Marine Aircraft Wing on 1 April.

10 April 1959: Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr. was named as one of the original seven Project Mercury astronauts selected for space training. The seven astronauts, all volunteers, were selected by NASA from an initial group of 110 leading military test pilots. Three years later, on 20 February 1962, Col Glenn would become the first American to orbit the Earth.

12-13 April 1918: Marines of the 4th Brigade suffered their first gas attack on the night and early morning hours of 12-13 April when the Germans bombarded the 74th Company, 6th Marines near Verdun with mustard gas. Nine Marine officers and 305 enlisted Marines were gassed and evacuated, and 30 Marines died from the effects of the gas shells which hit in the middle of the reserve area cantonments in which they were sleeping.

15 April 1962: Marine Corps operational involvement in the Vietnam War began on Palm Sunday when HMM-362 with its Sikorsky UH-34s arrived at Soc Trang in the Delta south of Saigon. The task unit was called "Shufly" and its first operational employment involved lifting Vietnamese troops into battle.

18 April 1983: One Marine Security Guard was killed and seven were wounded when a large car bomb exploded just outside the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. Lance Corporal Robert McMaugh was standing guard at Post 1, just inside the front entrance when the bomb exploded outside the door. The explosion killed 61 people including 17 Americans. LCpl McMaugh was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on 26 April.

21 April 1951: Marine carrier-based airplanes made their first aerial contact with enemy planes over the Korean front lines. Captain Philip C. Delong shot down two YAK fighters and 1st Lieutenant Harold D. Daigh destroyed one more and damaged another in the heavily defended Pyongyang-Chinnanpo area. Both pilots were with VMF-312 flying from the USS Bataan.

27 April 1805: First Lieutenant Presley N. O'Bannon, who with seven other Marines was part of a force of Greeks and Arabs led by American Consul William Eaton, raised the United States flag for the first time over a conquered fortress of the Old World at Derne, a stronghold of the Tripolitan pirates. Two Marines were killed and one wounded in the assault on the walled city.

28 April 1993: The last A-6E Intruder departed from Marine Corps service. Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 332 trans-ferred the last Marine A-6E to St. Augustine, Florida, and prepared for the squadron's transition to the F/A-18D and eventual movement from Cherry Point to Beaufort, South Carolina.
