Bring on the warm weather! Our great June programs are going to help you get your
summer kicked off. Here are a couple things going on at the COA:
May was a month to honor our Mothers, now June is here and we do the same for Fathers.
We’ll enjoy one of our beautiful County parks, have a picnic and spend some time fishing
on Tuesday, June 20th. Don’t worry Dads, we won’t rely on anyone to catch our lunch that
day! I know you’ll enjoy the menu and the fishing will be relaxing. Everyone can start
working on their “fishing story” now - I know some of you will have good ones! Most
importantly this event will show respect to our Fathers and gratitude for being there
whenever we need them. Let me be the first to say “Thank you Dad!” I encourage any
senior Dad to invite their son and/or grandson to join them and make it a family event.
We also have a great schedule of day trips planned over the next couple of months. I invite
you to join us on one; it’s a convenient way to enjoy the rich history and beauty of
Southwest Michigan. We keep the cost of our trips affordable and access easy so anyone
can attend. Our trips have been filling up fast, so if there is something you are interested in
register as soon as you can.
Join us at the COA in June and we’ll look forward to a fun summer!
Tim
We love to celebrate Water Festival at the COA!
And once again, we will participate in the
traditional senior lunch in the park on Friday, June
16. Everyone is invited to meet at Scidmore Park
at the Pavilion behind the old hospital.
Ox-Roast sandwiches will be served at Noon.
Leave room for some delicious strawberry
shortcake from St. Johns Lutheran Church. YUM!
Bingo will start at 1 p.m. for any senior who
would like to participate.
Don’t forget to pre-register for lunch by calling the COA at (269) 279-8083.
Hope to see you there!

is Andy Rozentals speaking with Sen. John Proos. In the picture on the right, seniors
Thelma James and Rosemary Reed are chatting with Rep. Aaron Miller.

Senior
Summer is here and that means fresh fruits and vegetables are plentiful - especially at our local farmer’s markets.
The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, known as Senior Project FRESH/Market FRESH in Michigan, provides older adults who
qualify with unprocessed, Michigan-grown products from authorized farmers markets and roadside stands throughout Michigan. Qualified
older adults receive coupons that are used to purchase Michigan-grown product at registered roadside stands and farmers markets.
Eligible items include berries, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, beans, honey and more. The program is free for both the participant and the
famer. It’s truly a win-win for Michigan farmers and older adults! Become a participating market or farmer.
How the Program Works:
Participants are given ten $2.00 vouchers to use at farmers markets and roadside stands that display a sign that reads “Senior Project
FRESH/Market FRESH Welcome Here”. The participant can choose from any Michigan-grown, non-processed product, including honey,
that is for sale. The participant uses the vouchers like cash to pay for the products.
Coupons cannot be used for items that are not normally grown in Michigan, such as bananas, oranges and pineapples. They also cannot be
used on potted plants, flowers, cheese, meat or eggs, even though some of these are good sources of nutrition. Participants are
encouraged to use all their coupons during the season, which ends October 31. If a participant has difficulty getting to a market, they can
assign a proxy.
If you received Project Fresh coupons last year, you most likely will qualify this year. Please call the office at (269) 279-8083 before you
stop by to make sure the coupons have arrived. If you would like to find out if you qualify for Project Fresh, please give us a call.
Local Author to Visit
Stop by and enjoy some light refreshments while local author Kelly
Pucci talks about her new book, Hidden History of St. Joseph County.
Ms. Pucci will be at the Three Rivers site on
Wednesday, June 14 at 10:30 am.
Hope to see you there!
![Page 6: The Senior Connection - sjccoa.com - 06 (June) Newsletter.pdf · at the Pavilion behind the old hospital. Ox-Roast sandwiches will be served at Noon. Leave room for some delicious](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022050215/5f615e78a597bf4bad6817c4/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
June Movies June 7: Some Like It Hot
Marilyn Monroe’s birthday is June 1 and Tony Curtis would have
been 92 on June 3. So what better way to celebrate than by
watching this delightful romantic comedy starring Curtis, Monroe
and Jack Lemon. We’ll have ice cream sundaes since ice cream was
Marilyn Monroe’s favorite treat!
June 14: To Kill A Mockingbird
Fathers’ Day is just around the corner so why not watch a movie
about a great dad. Atticus Finch is a lawyer in the Depression-era
South and defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge
and his children against prejudice.
June 21 - Father of the Bride
This charming remake starring Steve Martin is another example of
what it means to be a great dad. In this story, dad is trying to cope
with the fact that his little girl is growing up as she prepares for her
wedding. Lots of laughs and a good tug at the heartstrings.
June 28 - Flicka
A sweet movie about a girl and her horse. And of course, since we
are celebrating dads this month - another movie with a great
father figure. Oatmeal cookies will be our treat that day!
Movies are shown at both our centers
every Wednesday at 1 p.m.
We Had a Great Time
Celebrating Mom! Our Mother’s Day Tea was a big hit at both our Three
Rivers and Sturgis sites. Guests enjoyed tea and a delicious buffet
of finger foods. They were entertained by the Silver Pipers Four, a
fantastic flute quartet.
The senior moms all received a teapot with a pansy planted in it.
Several seniors brought their daughters and/or their
granddaughters with them to enjoy the afternoon.
