G enerally, my prayer travels at a fairly steady rhythm; I comprehend the words, but hardly

contemplate them. Yet this Monday morning I was subdued by a sentence. In the long version of Tachanun, recited on Mondays and Thursdays, I beseeched God to

Look from Heaven and perceive that we have become an object of scorn and derision among the nations; we are regarded as the sheep led to slaugh-ter, to be killed, destroyed, beaten, and humiliated.

Reading these words carefully we notice a general progression from “bad to worse”; what begins as “scorn” and “derision” becomes “slaughter” and “destruction”. Yet, we would expect destruction to be the worst and final blow, but it's not. Instead the culminating statement is “humiliation”, as if sheer embarrassment represents the most heinous experience to the Jewish people.

The immense pain of shame is, of course, a common theme in our tradition. We are aware of the equation, offered in numerous places in the Talmud, between public embarrassment and murder. Still even if that equation represents more than rhetorical flourish, it would seem most, if not all, of us would quickly choose shame over death. From the perspective of the authors of Tachanun, however, it seems that the humiliation of the Jewish nation, not its physical destruction, represents the worst suffering of diaspora.

The Tachanun equation of the humiliation and the destruction of the Jewish people mirrors a recent statement of Prime Minister Benjamin

MALI News Our mikveh breakfast, despite rainy weather but, thank G-d, not snow, was a resounding success. Our gracious honorees, Ann and Larry Cohn, had two full tables of family and we can’t thank the Kleinberg/Cohn family enough for lending their support to our fundraising breakfast. We would also like to thank the com-munity for the beautiful journal ads, generous donations and pa-tience with our decision to reschedule due to the blizzard in De-cember. Thanks, again, to Barry Zweigbaum,. Shani & David Kauf-man (and their troop of envelope stuffers), Sarah Watkin-Fox, Janet Akhavan, Sally Neuhaus, Abe Alper and Sheldon Schreiner who all helped make our breakfast a special event. Please remember that as Shabbat begins later our hours at the mikveh will be changing; please check our machine regularly-it is updated every Friday morning to reflect the new times for the upcoming week. Since we are not making appointments, please remember to arrive at least 40 minutes before the stated closing time for a bath, and at least 15-20 minutes before stated closing for a shower. We are required to shut our mikveh at 11 pm, based on the town’s regulations for our facility.

PRESIDENT’S PEN

Dear Fellow Congregants, At the end of Parshas Shelach, we are com-manded to don Tzitzit, the tallit kattan. The tzitzit are supposed to contain a blue fringe but since the source of the dye is not precisely known, most of us typi-cally only have white fringes.

The Israeli flag colors were chosen to and contain the symbolic colors of the tzitzit. Thus when we envelope our-selves in the tzitzit not only are we re-minded of the 613 mitzvot which unite us, but we are also reminded of our unity with Israel.

Each morning, as I put on my tzitzit, in the process of inspecting the fringes, I make sure that the last knot at the end of each fringe is not coming undone and I tighten them up.

The major goal I have for my role as President of the shul is unity. When I tighten up the knots of the tzitzit, I hope you too will symbolically participate in the tightening of our community and fo-cus more on what binds us than our in-dividual differences.

Wishing you a pleasant summer,

Irving Gomolin

YIP YOUTH It is the moment that many of the shul’s kids have been waiting for all year. The one day in June that they anticipate for oh-so long. The day when they wake up early in the morning excited for what will be in the late afternoon. I am not talking about the last day of school, but of the YIP Youth End of the Year Super Event! We have two exciting events planned for the shul’s youngsters. For the children in Nursery through the 2nd grade, we will head to White Post Farms where the children will be able to show their parents what a real animal’s room looks like, hop on all sorts of fun rides and enjoy all that the farm has to offer. The older group, 3rd graders through 6th graders, will head out for some mini-golf, and giant-raffle. The kids have been davening hard to earn YIPbucks (and zchus in shamaim, of course) so they can enter into the golden ticket raffle featuring port-able entertainment. After the final school bell, the youth department will get a little quieter. Groups for Nursery through 2nd grade will continue throughout the summer, while the junior congregation will take a break until after Labor Day. We are seeking interest in possibly arranging a family day to one of the major theme parks in drivable range. If you would be interested in joining up with a bunch of shul families, and get-ting the park’s discounted group rate, please let me know. Finally, we all know that the chaggim never come on time, they are either late or early. Well this year they are very early. As such we are already begin-ning to plan for all the Tishrei 5771 holidays. We need volunteers to take short shifts on Rosh Hasha-nah and Yom Kippur. We also are looking for hosts for the Sukkah hop. (Note to “Jewish Mothers”: Don’t panic, you still have plenty of time to prepare for Rosh Hashanah. I didn’t mean to make you nerv-ous.) Netanyahu defending the right of Israel's Gaza embargo. Netanyahu declared that Israel is en-dangered by “the Iran threat, the missile threat, and the threat I call the Goldstone threat.” Like the Tachanun prayer, Netanyahu linked physical destruction, Iran's nuclear capabilities, with the shame of criticism in the United Nations invited by the Goldstone report.

Responding to what he termed Netanyahu's moral equivalency, Leon Wieseltier wrote em-phatically in the New Republic that the “threat of delegitimation (sic) is not the threat of de-struction”. From his perspective, it seemed, Is-rael and the Jewish community at times overre-acts to these threats. Wieseltier is often pro-found and insightful in his social commentary, however here I believe he errs; and his error stems from a misconception of Jewish people-hood.

Ezekiel, in chapter 20, recalls the Exodus from Egypt. The prophet reveals why it is that God released His people from bondage. He de-clares that the Jews in Egypt remained unabash-edly committed to their false idols and it was only because of “My name which had been desecrated in the eyes of the nations” (Ez. 20:9). In essence, God redeemed us from Egypt not to prevent our destruction, but to prevent His own shame, as it were, in the eyes of the world.

Israel's purpose is to serve as the agents of God in this world. We therefore view ourselves, and are viewed by others, as “carrying the name of God”. That position demands higher ethical and spiritual standards; we are thus responsible not for a mere 7 commitments, but 613. Further, the suffering of Israel, as God's nation, essen-tially becomes, an embarrassment (as it were) to

God as it is the Jews who carry His name.

The unique character of our nation as one eternally stamped with the name of God tints our perspective on suffering. Physical pain and de-struction are mourned not only for their loss of life but for the blow that they strike to the name of God that we carry on our shoulders. More-over, from a pure and spiritual perspective, the shame endured when the Jewish nation suffers or fails represents the greatest tragedy as it under-cuts our very purpose as God's nation. Tacha-nun can therefore raise “humiliation” to the ulti-mate tragedy of Jewish suffering.

The Goldstone report and attempts to break the Gaza embargo have not directly threatened the physical existence of the state of Israel or the Jews who dwell there; yet in their attempts to delegitimize, they have affected its stature. The accusations that seek to embarrass the state of Israel and insist that it be treated as pariah even by its allies are far more powerful than credited. It is not by chance that the Jewish community has responded as passionately and vociferously to the “Goldstone threats” as it had to the mili-tary threats of recent past. Spiritually, the “Goldstone threats” that target the pride and principal of the Jewish nation undercut our character as much as any war or destruction.

Entering the Three weeks, and ultimately Tish'a b'Av, it's worth focusing on the challenges to our national character throughout history. The uniqueness of the destructions of our past stems not only from their physical massiveness, but from their ability to tear the badge of honor from the shoulders of our people. Humiliation threat-ens us once again, and, to continue the words of Tachanun, “Despite this we have not forgotten Your Name – we beg You not to forget us.”
