The first month of the new Lionistic year is behind us and plans for the New Year

are in full swing. Lion Jeff and I attended the opening of St Martins' new kitchen. It was a privilege to see how wel l the fac i l i ty is administered and I urge our members to consider donating food from our food collections to St Martins.

At our Lion Show post mortem meeting, it became clear that the funds we hoped for d id not materialize which will no doubt place a damper on our plans to help the community. We should not allow this to happen. Instead, we should go back to the old principals of Lionism. When a need is identified, we go out and find a way to alleviate that need. Plans are already underway to find a new fund raiser which will be supported by the community for the community. Funds were found to go ahead with the Leadership weekend and to fund a few cataract operations.

A big thanks to Lady President Estelle and her maid for spending two days cleaning our Club house.

Lion Charles and Lady Gayle hosted a Pizza & punch evening at their house which by all accounts was well supported. Lion Charles

has mentioned that the next event will be a Chinese braai.

We also had a successful evening at the clubhouse where we conveyed our appreciation to our faithful Show Exhibitors and supporters.

The Blind Bingo program is also back on track and new ideas on how to make it more interesting for the old folk were discussed.

Lion Dale also presented his program of fellowship for the year. The only way this program can be successful is if the rest of us support him.

Fellow Lions, the year ahead is going to demand creative ideas from us, and your support is vital to make this year just as successful as the previous years. I know that the Sheppie Lions will rise to the challenge and make this year one of the best years we have ever had.

Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies celebrated their 43rd Annual Induct ion Dinner at another

glittering occasion on Saturday 06th July at the Umthunzi Boutique Hotel in Umtentweni. Outgoing President Jean Masson paid tribute to both the Lions and Lion Ladies for their outstanding service to needy communities and individuals throughout the year. The prestigious Lion of the Year Award was presented to Lion Alister Love and President's Appreciation Medals were presented to Past District Governor Denis Meyer and Lion Charles Wallis.

Outgoing Lion Lady President Myrna Masson presented her “Lion Lady Of the Year” Award to Lion Lady Irene Love in recognition of her tireless efforts and ongoing commitments with the Port

Shepstone Lion Ladies’ Club.

Other awards included : 30 years of membership award to Lion Mervin Curnow, 15 years of membership award to 1st Vice District Governor Martin Rundle and 5 years of Membership Award to Lion Dale Mc Garry. Treasurer and Secretary medals were presented to Lions Richard Borradaile and Dale Mc Garry respectively. The Stirrer of the Year Award was presented to Lion Mike Davison. Past District Governor Denis Meyer formally inducted Lion Andre Beneke as incoming President. In his acceptance speech , L i on And re p ra i sed h i s predecessor for a very successful term as President and informed all members that, during his term of office, he will focus on facilitating positive change within the club

and it's projects.

Two new members, Ronald Tarboton and Norman Homes were also formally inducted into the Club by Past District Governor Denis.

From the Outback to Out and About in the World

Barry J. Palmer is part Outback, part Sydney and all Aussie. “I’m proud to be an Australian because of our culture,” he says. “It’s very relaxed, very laid back, easygoing and friendly.”

Lions’ 97th international president was born in the middle of World War II in Hornsby on the outskirts of Sydney. The bush was President Palmer’s backyard. Wallabies hovered near his home. Young Palmer was one of three children. His dad, Jack, was an accountant. Sylvia, his mom, ran the home. Barry played three soccer matches each week. “I love the team spirit of it. I like the skill of it. It’s fast. It’s open,” he says.

Intending to work in the wool industry, he attended an agricultural high school. He worked in the bush and in wool sheds. He relished the outdoors. “I think it’s important to be in tune with nature–to just sit in the bush for a while and listen to what’s going on and observing the animals, birds and lizards.” But the wool industry slumped, so he found a job at a bank.

Funny thing about the bank business–you see how money can be made. “I was meeting all these customers running their own businesses and doing quite well. So I decided that if I worked as hard for myself as I did for the bank I’d probably make a lot of money,” says President Palmer.

He started buying businesses, improving them and selling them. Then he went into real estate. President Palmer enjoyed furthering the dreams both of homebuyers and employees. “Assisting other people is something I’ve done for the last 30 years whether it’s a client or staff member,” he says.

Young Palmer met Anne when she was 15 and he was 19. Both quiet and reserved, they grew up and matured together as a couple. “Yeah, we hit it off. I couldn’t put my finger on any one thing. It was just a progression of growing up and wanting to share my life with her,” he says.

The Palmers have three children and eight grandchildren. He kicks the soccer ball around with the younger ones. “Anne was desperately keen to be a grandma. But if someone’s calling me grandpa then I’m getting old. So they call me poppy,” he says.

It’s the world of Lions that will occupy them for the next year. “Look at the projects and the variety of things we do around the world,” President Palmer says. “What I’ve seen so far just blows me away as to what we can achieve.”

Lion Heather Hardman was recently inducted as the 44th District Governor of District 410-C at the Lions Clubs International Convention in Hamburg, Germany.

Heather was born on the 9th February 1951 in Luanshya Northern Rhodesia. Her family relocated to Durban in 1963 when she was twelve. Heather Matriculated at the Durban Commercial College. In 1970 Heather started working at Air Conditioning and Engineering as a bookkeeper and it was during this time that she met Roy. They were engaged within 10 months and married in 1974. The couple moved to the Free State in 1976 and settled in Virginia. They have three children and five grandchildren with the sixth one on the way. Her one son lives in the UK

and her other son and daughter both live in New Zealand.

Heather joined the Virginia Lions Club as a Lions Lady and was eventually inducted as a Lion in 1996. She was sponsored by her husband, Roy. During her Lionistic career, Heather has served in the following positions : Club level - Club President, Club Secretary, Club Treasurer, Club Membership Director, Club PRO.District level - District Governor, Zone Chairperson, Cabinet Secretary, Cabinet Treasurer.Multiple District level - Youth Exchange Chairman.Heather is a Melvin Jones Fellow.Heather was also instrumental in starting the Miss/Mr Virginia Pageant which she coordinated for 13 yrs.Heather also made history in 2006 when she was sworn in as the very first Lady Lion Governor in the history of District 410-C.

During the past few years, Lion Heather has had to face tremendous challenges in her life. In 2009 Heather and husband Roy were involved in a horrific car accident which resulted in the amputation of her lower right leg. Heather showed incredible strength during this time and never allowed this disability to interrupt her busy schedule. Even prior to the fitting of her prosthesis and whilst still in a wheelchair, this remarkable lady insisted on doing her own housework and even coordinated the Miss Virginia Lions Pageant that year.

In 2011 her beloved husband of 37 years, Past District Governor Roy, was Called to Higher Service. This difficult time in Heather’s life resulted in her decision to relocate to Westville in Durban and transfer to the Cowies Hill Lions Club where she happily serves today.

This year Lion Heather, once again rose to the challenge and stood for the position of District Governor for the second time round. This was owing to the fact that no other candidates were willing to stand.

Despite the tremendous odds that Heather has faced during the past few years, she remains committed to Lionism and serving those less fortunate. Heather’s children and grandchildren are very dear to her and she tries at every opportunity to visit with them which is not always easy considering the fact that they live so far away. This extraordinary lady has been a wonderful example to us all and we wish her every success as our Governor.

It's not how much you accomplish in life that really counts, but how much you give to others.It's not how high you build your dreams that makes a difference, but how high your faith can climb.It's not how many goals you reach, but how many lives you touch.It's not who you know that matters, but who you are inside.Believe in the impossible, hold on tight to the incredible, and live each day to its fullest potential.

Lion Andre Beneke was recently inducted as the 43rd President of the Port Shepstone Lions Club.

Andre was born in Krugersdorp on 10 September 1956. By all accounts he was apparently a naughty little boy. He eventually matured and matriculated in 1973.

Andre started an apprenticeship in Aircraft Mechanics in 1974. In 1978 he started training as a Flight Engineer and eventually qualified as the youngest Flight Engineer in SAA aviation history. Andre has worked all over the world. Two of his most interesting postings were a year in Mauritius and a few months in Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan. He has visited more than 50 countries and has been on all five continents with the exception of Antarctica.

Andre is twice divorced. He has two beautiful daughters and two sons, one of which is autistic.

Andre has been a pensioner for the past 9 years and is having a ball. He particularly enjoys the outdoors. His interests include cycling, motorbikes, adventure and the stock exchange.

Andre was previously a member and chairman of the Kempton Park Round Table.

Lion Andre was sponsored into the Port Shepstone Lions Club by Lion Dup Du Plessis in 2010. During this relatively short space of time, Lion Andre has served as Club President (current), Membership Director, House & Fellowship Director, Lions Alert Director and Club Secretary. Lion Andre’s input in streamlining the Lions Alert portfolio has become legendary and, thanks to his fine efforts, the Club enjoys a professional relationship with our local Emergency Services. Lion Andre received a Presidents Appreciation award From PP Lion Kelvin which he is very proud of. Lion Andre also successfully completed the 2012 Regional Lions Leadership Institute held in Johannesburg.

We wish Andre a very successful term of office.

Lion Lady Estelle O’Neill is the newly appointed President of the Port Shepstone Lion Ladies Club.

Estelle is an accountant by trade. She worked for 15 years in shipping and then a further 18 years in hotels before retiring. Estelle has been retired for 10 years now.

Estelle is married to Richard who is a retired school principal at Morningside Primary in Durban.They have 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren.

Estelle joined the Hibberdene Lions Club in 2003 and served for a number of years as the club’s Treasurer. In 2011 Estelle decided to make a change and transferred to the Port Shepstone Lion Ladies Club.

Estelle contributed the following message :

“The Port Shepstone Lion Ladies are amazing. They are always so willing to do what ever is asked of them. I noticed that our numbers have increased and I believe we are going to have a good working year.

Quite a few projects have already been thrown into the boiling pot. We just need to sieve through these and run with the best.

Listening to the ladies in conversation it seems as though quite a few are making plans to attend the Midyear Conference at Sierra Ranch and also the Convention in Windhoek next year.

It is wonderful to see so many wives supporting their husbands in Lionism in the Sheppie Club”

Ismael de Pinho and was formally inducted into office by Past Council Chairman Paul Brauteseth. Lion President Clint’s parents Peter and Norma Barclay of Shelly Beach as well as his wife Natalie were present to congratulate him on this

honourable occasion. President Clint reiterated the Club’s dedication to its numerous community services projects, especial ly chi ld services, d i a b e t e s a w a r e n e s s , environmental awareness and Operation Brightsight. The evening was a great success and good fellowship was had by all.

LWallis hosted a Pizza & Punch Party at their home in Umtentweni

on Saturday 20th July to raise funds for the Club’s Administration account. The event was very well supported by both Lions and friends of Lions. The hosts provided the punch, the pizza bases, cheese etc. and the pizza oven and guests brought along their own t o p p i n g s w h i c h w e r e s h a r e d accordingly. The music for the event - a tribute to the 60's, 70's & 80's - was provided by PDG Denis Meyer. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended - well done to Charles & Gayle on this fine initiative. The ingredients of that powerful punch still remain a closely guarded secret!

On Friday 26th July, Port Shepstone Lions hosted their traditional Show Appreciation braai at their club house in Umtentweni. Invited guests included helpers and

sponsors who contributed towards the success of the project. Lion Alastair Warman and his team braaied the meat and the Lion Ladies provided delicious salads for the guests.

The guests were addressed by both Club President Andre Beneke and 2013 Show Convener Jean Masson who both expressed their sincere appreciation to all who gave generously of their time and means towards this fine project.

Show Convener J e a n a l s o p a i d special tribute to L ion Lady Jane M a s s e y w h o i s a n n u a l l y responsible for the book ings o f a l l exhibitors for the Show. IOh boy you gonna love this one!!

Van No 1 was Merv, Clayton,Inika, Dom and LolaVan No 2 was Charles, Kevin, Gayle, Chloe and Brylee.We stayed in Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve which is +- 70km outside Matatiele. The accommodation was a beautiful old farm house with lime stone walls which has been renovated.It consists of a large dining room/lounge area with a fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, three bedrooms and a bathroom. The house can sleep up to 12 persons and is serviced daily by a live in maid.Beds were very comfy and the house was very warm and well equipped for the price.Friday was a pleasant trip up with no incidents, we arrived just after 7 to find a warm fire lit and the Curnow's comfortably parking off. I asked myself “What is a weekend away without a braai”? Answer : “a boring washout”. So, against a few disgruntled comments from the senior part of the clan, I proceeded outside to light a braai. The wind was blowing a gale force (excuse the pun!) and being a nature reserve I knew the fire break beyond the wall of the braai area would be quite adequate should an ember be blown off the fire. Anyway after a dozen beers, ¾ bottle of Cappies and flipping a few chops and a beaut steak, I retired to the warmth of the lounge area to listen to the banter. Next thing I looked up and it seemed to be very light outside, so asked why it was so light? Clayton jumped to his feet, looked out the door and shouted “oh #@^$ there's a fire!!We all rushed out and, sure enough there she was. A little veld fire, without any fire fighting equipment around it soon became a raging inferno. Picture four thatch rondavels, a wind you couldn't stand in and 13000 hectares of highly flammable nature reserve. Yip that is what we faced!

I found a mop and Kev found a 2lt empty coke bottle. At first strike the mop snapped in half so I had to get real close after that to beat the face of the fire. Kev poked holes in the lid of the bottle and sprayed the fire with water. We did surprisingly well by keeping the fire away from the rondavels. Clay did a great job of supplying us with refreshments and Merve went inside to work out if my Public Liability cover would be enough for what was unraveling before his eyes.20 minutes later a truck arrived with 3 lady fire fighters armed with knapsacks and no beaters. A huge relief but very frustrating to watch!! We eventually retired and went inside to catch our breaths and have another dop leaving the professionals to it.After 4 hours sleep the kids needed entertaining so we all got up and had breakfast and left on our adventure. Very embarrassing for me to see the extent of the fire but after another beer I got over it.We drove up Ongeluksnek Pass which was truly a stunning drive with amazing views and a slow road which hardly gets used. From the bottom of the pass to the top is a vertical climb of 1000m. the top being +-2500m.We decided to drive the loop to Quachasnek and exit Lesotho there. Lovely drive with amazing views. It was mostly dirt roads with a 90km stretch of tar. The whole loop was 230km and it took 7hrs so you can imagine the state of the roads.Merv and Kev didn't trust me to braai the 2nd night so they made a potjie inside which was superb. Sunday morning was a leisurely get up, pack and hightail it home to Bela's for lunch. We were home by 12:30 after having an awesome weekend. Next stop - Windhoek!!
