xhilirating, overwhelming,

Eexciting, busy, enjoyable, exhausting, fulfilling, fun

and motivating are some of the words that come to mind when describing the past Lionistic year.

July 2012 saw the relaunch of the Sheppie Pride, our Club’s monthly newsletter and it has been all systems go ever since. This newsletter has been so well received by both our club members and Lions and friends from around the world. This enthusiasm has encouraged me to keep this project alive and each month, the dedicated members of the Sheppie Lions clan provide me with plenty of material for each issue.

T h e i n i t i a l p u r p o s e o f reintroducing the newsletter was to encourage our members to continue their commitment towards our very worthy cause but also to showcase our Club to other Clubs and share our projects, fellowship and fun. As the Dis t r ic t ’s Membersh ip Chairman, I would love to see all

our other clubs enjoying Lionism to the full like my colleagues in the Sheppie Club do. If they follow this great example, their Clubs will grow and their commitment to community service will increase.

I am truly proud of this club for so many reasons. All projects are so enthusiastically supported, all Lions events are wel l attended by members of the Club and the fellowship amongst members is second to none. We are not just a Lions Club, we are a family of close friends who truly care about each o the r and t h i s compass ion overflows into the community services that we provide. We respect one another and try as much as possible not to find fault with each other.

As we come to the end of the 2012/2013 Lionistic year, I would like to express by deep and sincere appreciation to Lion Jean Masson for his superb leadership of our Club and to all our Lions and Lion Ladies for the support that they have given this newsletter. They are all such very special people and I will continue to try and provide a great newsletter, one that we as Sheppie Lions can all be proud of.

he 2013 Lions Show proved

Tto be one of the most c h a l l e n g i n g e v e r

undertaken by the Lions Club of Port Shepstone. Each year, for the past 27 years, the Show Committee have tried to reinvent the project in order to attract visitors and this year was no exception. Our major stumbling block this year was the venue. The Port Shepstone Borough Fields are no longer suitable for this event. The condition of the fields, lack of proper facilities and drainage is testimony of this. Prior to the commencement of the Show, the entire layout had to be reversed owing to a large section of the grounds that was wet and impassable. We experienced a big downpour of rain on the T h u r s d a y e v e n i n g w h i c h transformed the grounds into a virtual "Mud Bath". The water simply had no where to go. Prior to the rains, there were a number of vehicles parked on the field and when they tried to leave the ground, the roadways were reduced to mud. The organisers had to spent the next two days rehabilitating the roadways which added to the numerous tasks that they already had for the event. We are extremely grateful to the various individuals, companies and sawmills who donated over 30 truckloads of sawdust, graded the

roadways and spread the sawdust into place. The opening of the Show on Friday had to be delayed because of this. The arena was also adversely affected and a couple of arena events that involved vehicles had to be cancelled.

Despite the tremendous odds that we were faced with, the members remained positive and worked extremely hard for very long hours to keep the show running. Every year there are incidents that negatively impact on the event. Sometimes these are unavoidable when running an event of this nature, however we went out of our way to ensure that there were adequate security and safety measures in place and, although there were a few complaints, these were fewer than we have had in previous years. We were all humbled by the tremendous support and understanding we received from the vast majority of our visitors and the exhibitors and are also very grateful to the SAP for their constant presence and support during the Show. The e x h i b i t o r s w e r e t h e m o s t inconvenienced as they no longer had access to their usual parking facility in the Mbango Quarry - this area was totally inaccessible. They too had to park at the high school and those who had stock

for their various stands had to endure security checks each time they entered the show grounds to drop off stock. Our hats off to Criss-Cross Security for handling a very frustrating situation which sometimes resulted in heated arguments with some of the exhibitors. It was a difficult situation but, at the end of the day unavoidable. Our contracted electricians, MP Electrical were marvellous and, despite the very wet conditions, we had few electrical problems. Our Sound, stage and lighting was superb throughout the event and there were no problems experienced despite the conditions.

The gates were officially opened at midday on Friday and the afternoon was dominated by the South Coast's Battle of the Schools Talent Contest which took place in the Enterta inment Marquee. This popular event was very well supported and a record number of schools participated. This was followed by DJ's Wayne, Pascal & Pearce and Niskerone who entertained a very well supported party night also in the Entertainment Marquee.

he arena was occupied for most of the Saturday morning with the Strongman competition which was followed

Tby the official opening ceremony. HCM Mayor Cynthia Mcwebu addressed the audience, thanked the Lions for their fine efforts in community service and officially opened the Show. Deputy Mayor Johnny De Wet also

offered a vote of thanks on behalf of the Hibiscus Coast Municipality. This was followed by the official exhibitor prize giving CEREMONY. A total of 135 exhibits were on display at this year's Show. The following prizes were awarded :

Our very own Melvin the Lion assisted with the prize giving and posed for many of the photo shoots. He also interacted with many of the kiddies and created much excitement.

Visitors were then entertained by the Circus Balloon circus act in the main arena which proved to be a very big hit with both young and not so young. At the same time, the very first Miss Port Shepstone Lions Show Pageant preliminaries were taking place in the Main Exhibition tent as well as cooking demonstrations.

There was live rugby on the big screens in the Entertainment Marquee for most of the afternoon which was followed by a Oscar Swanelund performing live. The Saturday Evening's entertainment kicked off with Tomorrow's World and Wolfie which kept feet tapping until the main act for the evening, Freshly Ground came on stage and performed superbly for the audience. They were very well received by their many fans who attended.

n Sunday morning, the

Oarena opened at 09:00 with a parade of classic and

vintage cars followed closely by a mass parade of bikers from our local Harley Davidson Chapter. These magnificent vehicles were displayed to visitors in the arena for most of the morning. This was followed by an exciting Dog Show / agility display by the Hibiscus Kennel Club. The final arena act for the day was another exciting performance by the Circus Balloon.

The f inals for the Miss port Shepstone Lions Show Pageant took place in the Entertainment Marquee from 11:30 onwards with the following results :

This event was a huge success thanks to organisers, Stacey Upfold, Myrna Masson, the judging panel, contestants, sponsors and supporters.

The afternoon was dominated by relaxed live music in the main Entertainment Marquee courtesy of Oscar Swanelund and various other local musicians where after Lions, Lion Ladies and their helpers gathered for their tradit ional gathering and photo shoot.

The show was, in our opinion a success, despite the tremendous o d d s t h a t w e f a c e d . E a r l y indications are showing that we made a good profit and all the

proceeds will go towards our various service projects. Our heartfelt gratitude to all our visitors, exhibitors, helpers, entertainers and our local press who braved the elements and conditions and attended en masse to show their support of this amazing event.

Lions are all volunteers and all members gave up their entire weekend - at their own personal expense to try and make this project a success. The wonderful citizens of the Hibiscus Coast have ensured that this event has lasted for the past 27 years and we want to assure everyone that we are planning a brainstorming session this month in order to completely revamp the Show and find an alternative venue that is more user friendly for a project of this nature.

This event belongs to all the citizens of the Hibiscus Coast and we are determined to keep it alive.
