From the Grand KnightCouncil 7399 is doing great and during this month you will see this occurring in many different areas such as advancements, charity, Pro-Life, new technology and community. If the council continues in this way, 2015 will be a record year.

On Saturday, January 24th, the following Knights have now completed their full Knighthood by attending their 3rd Degree Exemplification in Gainesville. They are: Fr Rafael, Joe Caso, Joey Caso, Sam Seisse, Juan Toole, Jack Mullarkey, Chris Yoerges, Bernie Graleski, and George Hawkins. This has been the largest group to attend an exemplification in many years. Special thanks goes to Rich Carey for representing the council leadership for this event and Tom O’Brien for coordinating and processing all the necessary paperwork for the council. A 4th degree is scheduled in April in Jacksonville which will be held at the Cody Center at St Joseph’s parish. More info to follow on this event in the near future.

Faith In Action from this past month. Thank you all who helped in these areas:

Team A Breakfast – Our monthly breakfast was very delicious again and it appears that we are getting a nice showing for assisting Jack & Mac with preparing, serving and clean-up. We had a moderate showing thanks to the Blue Mass attendees after the 10 AM Mass. Please see the article on possible changes coming to our monthly breakfast program.

Challenge Enterprise Dance – (Friday, January 9th)

Our council under the leadership of, Jim Pilliod, (Council Community Director) hosted a dance for Clay County’s Challenge Enterprise agency. Jim coordinated the food, setup and cleanup, which was received very well by those in attendance. He wanted to thank all the Knights for attending and assisting in making this a big success.

Kingley Avenue Clean-up – (Saturday, January 10th) Our bimonthly community clean-up event was attended by several Knights and their families as they took the time to clean-up along the Kingsley Avenue between Blanding and US 17. A total of ten individuals helped with this event. Next Scheduled

event is March 14th. Hope to see you there. Thanks to Greg Donaldson for leading this event.

Children’s Liturgy Ice Cream Social – (Sunday, January 11th) Joe Crawford and Carlos Carbarjal brought together 27 youths who help our parish each weekend with presenting masses as either Alter Servers, Readers, Lay Eucharistic Ministers, Users, or Children’s Choir. This event was attended by the children and their families. Each child received a pin this year identifying their participation in serving at masses which we hope will help keep them engaged as they get older. This is the second anniversary of this event at St Catherines and I want to thank Joe for all his effort in leading this event. I also want to thank Greg Donaldson, Council Chancellor, for standing in for me while I attended a family event out of town that weekend.

Monthly Social – (Thursday, 29 January) Deacon Larry & Darlene Hart along with Joe & Bern Crawford served a wonderful meal to us. They also offered a program around Pro-Life and offered everyone to get a look at the Doppler monitor we purchased for the Lifeline Resources a few months ago.

Annunciation Spaghetti Dinner (Saturday, 31 January) The team of Phil Robbins, Bob Culp, Renato Sciumbata and Mike Miller teamed up to chair this year’s annual event to benefit our school. We are even scheduled to have children to help clear the tables as a sign of appreciation. Unable to add too much more information on this event but I am told that our recommendation of the other two churches who support the school are also planning on hosting the same kind of meal in the next few weeks as well.

February Calendar –

Monthly Parish Breakfast – (Sunday, 8 February, After 8 and 10 AM masses) Team B could use your help with setting up, serving and cleaning up after this event. They meet at 7 AM and could use some help especially between 10:45 am to 12:30 pm to help with serving the meal and clean-up. Challenge DanceOn Friday night, January 9th, the annual Challenge Dance was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus at St. Catherine’s Rooney Hall. SK Jim Pilliod coordinated the event while “Deputy” Shawn performed DJ duties. His Rock & Rollin’ play list had the crowd out on the dance floor. The food line prepared by the Knights was also a big hit. Several knights from St. Catherine’s and St. Luke’s who benefit from Challenge Enterprises attended.

Challenge Enterprises provides programs, services and work opportunities for individuals with disabilities. They give lifetime support to those in need starting with the Lighthouse Learning Center on Kingsley Avenue near the Pengree’s restaurant. Passing of Three BrothersThis last month saw the passing of three of our senior Brother Knights. Their stories show there is no set pattern on how somebody becomes a Knight of Columbus.

On December 20th, Bob Wyllie passed away at the age of 82. He was married to his wife Jeannie for 30 years. Bob was a Korean War veteran serving in the United States Marine Corps. He made his 1st degree in 1958 in Michigan. He made his 2nd and 3rd degrees as a member of Council #7399 in 2006 and 2008.

On January 8th, Joe Torre passed away at the age of 98. He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Mary. Joe waited awhile to join the Knights of Columbus. He was 92 when he made his 1st degree in 2008. Joe made his 4th degree in 2010.

On January 11th, Jim Cole passed away at the age of 72. He was married to his wife Debbie for 34 years. Debbie was St. Catherine’s Worship Coordinator for many years. Jim served in the United States Army. He made his 1st degree in 1970. Jim served as District Deputy and Grand Knight while living in Oklahoma. He was involved in Urban Plunge and served on the Parish Bazaar Core Team for many years.

The Blue MassAt the 10AM Mass on January 18th, the Knights of Columbus sponsored its annual “Blue Mass” to thank the local First Responders – Police, Firefighters and EMT’s. SK Dave Miller coordinated the event which Fr. Ignatius celebrated. The Assembly’s Color Corps was there to add pomp and circumstance. Each first responder received a card whose cover is shown below. Inside the card were prayers to St. Michael, patron saint of police and to St. Florian, patron saint of firefighters. After the Mass, the first responders and their families were treated to a fantastic breakfast served by the Knights.

Monthly Breakfast Change May Be Coming

By Jay Heather, Grand Knight and Team B Co-Leader

Over the past few months, we have noticed that the support for our breakfasts has weaned. Following the 8 AM Mass, the support has been very minimal and after the 10 AM Mass, we have moderate support. From those who attend, they enjoy the menu and food that is offered each month and the price is very reasonable, especially since we started offering family prices ($20), which started early last year, so now we need to determine what the best move is. The breakfast team leaders are meeting in the very near future to determine the best move to improve this situation for the amount of work it takes to host these events.

A recommendation has been made, to go to bimonthly breakfasts and do BBQ Sunday’s on the opposite months. A recommendation will be brought to the Council leadership after this meeting takes place.

Though the breakfasts are used to generate some operating funds for the council’s charitable giving, it is realized that they also offer parishioners the opportunity for fellowship. Prior to our announcement, we will approach the office staff and our pastor for their thoughts on possible solutions of this situation.

New Knight’s OrientationIn the last six months, Council #7399 has welcomed nine new Knights from recent “Christ Renews His Parish” (CRHP) teams. Team #13 – Charles Boggs. Team #14 – Rich Carey. Team #15 – Bernie Graleski and Chris Yoerges. Team #16 – Joe Caso Sr., Joey Caso Jr., George Hawkins, Juan Toole and Sam Seise. These new Knights had many basic questions about the Knights of Columbus – Organization, Activities and Mission.

The Deputy Grand Knight, Tom Scherch and Rich Carey set up an orientation hour before the

business meeting on January 8, 2015. Seven of the new Knights attended with Dan Wehby handing out a copy of the Council’s website home page <KofC7399.org> . Tabs of interest on the website include: a) a Picture Directory of the Council’s officers, b) an Annual Event Calendar and c) a collection of the last two years of the Ship’s Log newsletters. Dan Costello contributed a condensed history of the Knights of Columbus from its founding by Fr. Michael McGivney in 1882.

At this first orientation hour, many questions were answered, but time did not allow answering of many more questions. All agreed that additional orientation hours would be helpful. There will be another orientation hour at 6PM before the next Business meeting on February 12th. If any of the new Knights have any particular questions, they can email them to Tom Scherch so he can do a little homework before the next orientation hour.

Third Degree ExemplificationOn Saturday, January 24th, nine 2nd degree Knights journeyed south to Gainesville’s Queen of Peace Church to attend their 3rd degree exemplification. Included were: Fr. Rafael, Joe and Joey Caso, Bernie Graleski, George Hawkins, Jack Mullarkey, Sam Seise, Juan Toole and Chris Yoerges. Third degree Brother Knight Rich Carey went along for support.

These nine new 3rd degree Knights plus any current 3rd degree Knight are eligible to move on to full Knighthood at the April 25th 4th degree exemplification in Jacksonville. This ceremony is to be held at St. Joseph’s Cody Center.

From the Lady KnightsOn a brisk Sunday morning on the 25th of January, the Lady Knights set up a Bake Sale Table piled high with fresh baked brownies and a beautiful variety of scrumptious home-made cookies. They were raising money for the “ORION” Project, the K-9 for Wounded Warriors project. The KC Assembly was selling BBQ Pulled Pork Dinners and the Ladies were providing the dessert. The Ladies raised $131.00 for the project. A gracious “Thank You” to all the ladies who baked brownies, and cookies. You know they were a “hit” when more than one person buys some, goes home and comes back to buy more! Also, “thank you” to Vicki Counts and Nancy Wetherbee who chaired this event. Nancy’s artistic talents decorated our table perfectly!

Thank you to all the ladies who turned out to help the Knights from the Assembly, pull pork for the BBQ dinners on Sunday. We had a fun time and made quick work of it. Good job everyone!

Our next endeavor will be the Spaghetti Dinner on Sat. Jan. 31st, when the KC Council has a fund-raiser for Annunciation Catholic School. The spouses of the Knights will provide dessert for the crowd that attends this dinner. Any kind of dessert is fine and we look forward to long tables of mouth-watering temptations.

Feb. 12th is the date of the Lady Knights next meeting. In honor of St. Valentine, we will be making Valentine Cards at our meeting. We’ll discuss plans for our “Souper Supper” which will be after Ash Wednesday, on the 1st Friday of Lent, Feb. 20th. Come join us. The Knights and the Ladies will serve two different kinds of tasty meatless soup for all who attend.

I invite all the spouses of the new Knights to come join us for a meeting to see what we’re about. Why not come to our Feb. 12th meeting. We’d love to have you stop by. Happy Valentines Day.

Sincerely,Mardelle WehbyLady Knights President

Family of the MonthMany years ago they decided that a large family is the way to go. They love children and love life, along with the joys/challenges of having a large family. Today, they have one son and five daughters, and several grandchildren. Now that they both have retired, they spend time traveling around visiting their children and creating as many memories as possible with them and their children, but that is not all.

They have been active for many years in our parish as Pro Life advocates. They spend time in adoration each week and can be seen at early masses during the week. They both, along with many of their children, have earned the title of “Plunger.” He is still active on the trip as one of the runners traveling many hundred miles on the July trip going from job site to job site, giving advice and dropping off materials to keep the teams outfitted with what they need.

His new venue of serving the Lord is the Kairos Prison Ministry. He will tell you that this was the last thing he thought he would do and now he is hooked. He also serves as the Pro Life Director for our council. During this month, he chaired two events for the council: “Children’s Liturgy Ice Cream Social” and the monthly social on Pro Life.

They are an example of what being a Catholic family is all about. It is with great pleasure and honor that I announce Knight “Joe and Bern Crawford” as our Family of the Month for January 2015.

Jay HeatherGrand Knight Council # 7399

Knights of the MonthI am very pleased to announce that our Knights of the Month answered the call this year to head one of our biggest events of the year. This event directly supports our parish school. Last year, it was decided by Dave and Pete, that it was time for them to change roles after co-chairing it together for many years. I put out the call a few times hoping someone would step forward and as time grew year, I thought that the Deputy Grand Knight and I were going to have to lead this event.

Then, on the day we needed an answer because this event had to be done, we had a group of guys step up to take over the reins of this event for this year.

These Knights are active examples of wonderful, serving Catholic Gentlemen and have been selected Orange Park Council’s Knights of the Month for January 2015, Sir Knights, Phil Robbins and Renato Sciumbata, along with Knights Bob Culp and Mike Miller. Job well done gentlemen!

In His Service,

Jay HeatherGrand KnightCouncil # 7399

K9’s for Warriors BBQ DinnerIn September, the Assembly led a donation request from the parish during all six Masses for “Operation Orion” to raise money for the “K9’s for Warriors” project. This Phase One resulted in over $4,700 being presented to the Organization.

On January 25th, Phase Two of the Assembly’s plan was a BBQ dinner sale after the 10AM and noon Masses. The Lady Knights helped by pulling pork the day before. In addition, they provided home-made cookies and brownies for sale along with the pork dinners. The net result of this phase will be over $800 being donated to K9’s for Warriors.

On January 22nd, K9’s for Warriors rolled out a new campaign called “Stop 22”. Every day 22 veterans take their own lives – that’s over 8,000 per year. It is our prayer and mission to lower this terrible number.

Greetings From the New EditorIn case you missed the announcement in last month’s issue, the Ship’s Log has a new editor, so I thought I would take the time to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born in New York, but my family moved to Florida when I was two years old, and I’ve lived here ever since. I was a member of the fi rst class at Bishop Snyder and, following High School, I earned a degree in graphic design at FSCJ. I recently joined the Knights as a way of helping those in need in our community, and I’ve already taken part in a number of great events, from food packaging to trash clean up.

I look forward to participating in more of these events in the future, as well as serving our council as the editor of this publication. Although I shall strive to maintain the same level of quality upheld by my predecessor, Joe Pinnell, I also plan on implementing a few stylistic changes over the next few months. If you have a problem with any of these changes, or wish to suggest a change of your own, please feel free to let me know. This is, after all, your newsletter.

Sincerely and Fraternally,Joey Caso
