JANUARY 2020 TEVET - SH'VAT 5780The Short Schrift

By the time you read this, it will already be 2020. Wow! This year holds a great deal of import, for multiple reasons. Yes, there will be a presidential election in our country. Without getting into politics, I’ll just say this holds great significance for every one of us. Here at TBH, 2020 is the year of our membership goal: 220 member house-holds in 2020. I believe we can reach this goal!! As of this writing, we are 211 mem-ber households strong!

If you are reading this and are not yet a member, please consider making 2020 the year you take the leap and join us. We changed our dues policy a few years ago, and we are all free to set our own mem-bership rate – no apologies or explanations necessary. We have suggested dues, based on budgetary needs, but you do not have to abide by them. We don’t want finances to be a barrier to your membership.

Our Vibrant ShulI am continually amazed by the variety of activities and events at TBH. I was in Hawaii for the first half of December, so I missed the Shabbat Salon, Klezmer concert, and other wonderful events. I am

grateful that I was back in time to expe-rience the play, The Dybbuk. It was an incredible performance! Yasher Koach to director Nomy Lamm, the entire cast, musicians, costume and prop designers.

Last night, I attended our annual Hanu-kah party. It was highly attended, and a great deal of fun! Todah Rabah to Cath-erine Carmel and everyone who helped organize and clean up afterwards.

Hanukkah Appeal: Great Success!!Your Board set an ambitious goal for this year’s Hanukah appeal: $10,000. Through your generosity, we met that goal in ad-vance of the deadline! Many thanks to our Development Team, led by Ed Adelson, for guiding us throughout this process. And, as always, a special thanks to Kayla Iverson for all her work in making this happen.

Wishing you and yours great health and happiness,

THANK YOU DONORS!

TBH Daf Yomi: A Local Olympia Take on a World-Wide Jewish ExperienceDaf Yomi (literally “page a day”) is a world-wide spiritual and intellectual practice of studying one page of Talmud a day. It is a coordinated effort—everyone reads the same page on the same day—and the cycle is beginning again in early January. The cycle is renewed every 7 years! We are forming a local Olympia/TBH group to do this practice together—to engage deeply with this Jewish text and support one another’s learning and spiritual growth. No previ-ous Talmud or Hebrew experience is necessary—all you need is your inquisitiveness, openness, and creativity! The Talmud is the major body of post-biblical Jewish literature that dates from the 7th century, developed after the de-struction of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem to both preserve and reinvent Judaism. It is the source of much of what we know about Jewish practice and thought.

How will it work?1. First, sign up!2. Everyone who participates will be added to a TBH Daf Yomi Google group and given access to a Google calendar.3. Everyone will read the page of the day on their own. A great online resource is this website: www.sefaria.org 4. Each participant will be assigned a day in the cycle on which they will be responsible for sharing a reflection (see #5). Once everyone is assigned a day, we will go through the list again. 5. On your assigned day, write a commentary for the group on the day’s page. This could be anything! An insight, a challenge, a question. It can be scholarly, or it can be creative. It can take the form of a poem, a drawing, an essay. It can hew to Jewish tradition or be completely radical. You can draw on your own experiences, other traditions, etc. Again, ANYTHING GOES! Email your commentary to the Google group.

Feel free to invite others! People can join whenever! The cycle starts January 5! Questions or want to sign up? Contact Rabbi Seth at [email protected] or use this link: https://forms.gle/FLduhhyjJYFeKs1JA

Listening Circles: Facilitated by Jews & Allies United to End Anti-Semitism

Sunday, January 12, 2:00 pmCome join us to think about anti-Semitism together, through the lens of personal experiences and feelings. This interactive program will be led by an intergenerational, interracial group of Jews and allies who are longtime members or supporters of TBH. We will define anti-Semitism, explore how anti-Sem-itism is experienced from the inside, and share strategies for healing from its effects.

Jews and Allies United to End Anti-Semitism is an international project of the Re-evaluation Counseling commu-nities, the basic tool of which is co-counseling--two people taking turns listening to each other to recover from the effects of hurtful experiences. The founder of this project is Cherie Brown, an adjunct faculty member at the Recon-structionist Rabbinical College and a frequent contributor to Tikkun magazine. She is also the co-author of the book-let Anti-Semitism: Why Is It Everyone's Concern? To learn more about this international project, see reports of recent activities, and read what both Jews and allies say about the impact of this work, visit JewsAndAllies.org.

Registration for the upcoming TBH event is encouraged (but not required), please RSVP on the event page.

For more questions, contact Susan at +1 (360) 790-9046 or Rosie at [email protected].

Shabbat Shirah Kumsitz & Seudat Shlishi

The TBH choir, Kol Neshama, invites you to the 5th annual Shabbat Shirah kum-sitz on Saturday, February 8th, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the Social Hall.

The day marks Shabbat Shirah, the Sabbath of Song, when we readParshat Beshalach (Exodus 13:17-17:16), the Torah portion that includes the Song at the Sea. A kumsitz (from the Yiddish “come sit”) describes gathering together to sing and socialize, either on the floor, in chairs, or around a campfire.

Bring your guitars, percussion instruments, and voices! We will sing your favor-ite versions of Shabbat prayers, Jewish and Israeli folk songs, and Jewish camp songs. You can help teach songs orally or bring printed copies to hand out. If you know in advance of a song you’d like us to sing, share the lyrics with Lydia Beth at [email protected]. Most importantly of all, come even if you don’t have a

song to share or think you know any. Bring yourself, your family, and friends! All levels of singing experience and knowledge are welcome. Everyone is welcome to contribute (listening and clapping count, too). We’ll conclude our time with Havdallah led by Rabbi Goldstein and Seudat Shlishi, the third meal at the end of Shabbat. Please bring a dairy potluck item to share. Coffee, tea, and utensils provided. If you have any questions, please contact the Choir Director, Lydia Beth Leimbach, at (360) 878-1013 or [email protected].

FROM CATHERINE CARMEL:FAMILY LIFE AND LEARNING DIRECTOR

I’m writing this while preparing for Hanukkah and thinking about how we, as human beings, create mira-cles. Last week we welcomed a new member to our family. Fox is our third grandchild, the first child born to our oldest daughter and her hus-

band. As is every other child born, he is a perfect mira-cle. Hanukkah also celebrates the story of a miraculous human achievement. The Maccabees were a small group of passionate idealists who fought against an empire and won. It was their devotion to their community and faith that they could make a difference that made it possible for them to create their own miracle.

One of the things we stressed with the Beit Sefer kids this season is to ‘be the light’. For them, this lesson was that while not everything that breaks can be put back togeth-er, there’s always some way to light the darkness. What happens when you light a candle in the dark? It illumi-nates everything and grabs your attention. What happens when you are paying attention? You can see what is broken. Once you see, you have the opportunity to create the miracle. Like the Maccabees, each of us can make a difference to someone sitting in darkness.

The kids learned that light in the world does not necessar-ily come from a flame. It shines forth from the actions we choose to take and the values that guide how we interact with the rest of the world. During Hanukkah we remem-ber the historic moment when ordinary people rose to the challenge of lighting the darkness. They created their own miracles because they believed in their own strength and purpose. For us, lighting the darkness may not look like retaking a temple, but the task is still there. It is our ethics

and continuing devotion to community that defines and sustains us from one generation to the next.

How can you shine a light into the darkness? What do you see and how will you act? Too often, I believe we sell ourselves short. We simply fail to notice the mirac-ulous potential within ourselves. We hope for miracles, rather than act to create them. My challenge to you is going forward is to believe in the Maccabean strength within yourself and work to create the miracles our world needs.

L’shalom,

The following note is from Akiva Erezim, the teacher of our Alim (5th and 6th grade) group:In Alim, we have been encountering the prophets and their stories. We talked about Devorah, Joshua, Jonah, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Amos, Isaiah, and Eliyahu to name a few. Questions include: What does it mean to be called to action? How do we do the right thing even when it is hard? How do we stand for justice even when our friends or loved ones may disagree with us? We are discuss-ing how to be good people in a world where bad things happen. We are learning about what things we can do to shine our light and cast away the darkness. We are exploring the power of our actions, the impressive im-pact each and every person has. As “[Ben Azzai] would also say: Do not scorn any man, and do not discount any thing. For there is no man who has not his hour, and no thing that has not its place” (Pirkei Avot 4:3).

Felicia and I have lived in Olympia since 1990 and, during that time, Temple Beth Hatfiloh has become a central part of our lives – providing a community of support, song and wor-ship. Our positive experience makes us want to help perpetuate the light of Judaism in Olympia and the U.S. To that end, we intend our gift to support youth education at TBH. We particularly want to help offset the financial burden for young families and support a vibrant educational program. To learn more about TBH's LIFE & LEGACY opportunities, please contact Charles Shelan at [email protected].
