RECREATE is a cross-border project to boost economic regeneration and create

jobs through the development of the creative industries supported under the

cooperation programme INTERREG IV A France (Channel) – England.

www.sorting-offi ce.co.ukThe Sorting Offi ce is a partnership between Eastleigh Borough Council and arts’

charity ‘a space’. The charity manages the studio as part of a diverse portfolio

of project platforms, including ArtVaults, the Arches Studios and Tower House,

which cater for visual arts, screen-based practices and designer makers.

‘a space’ strives to grow creative communities, providing opportunities for

emerging artists to make new work, develop their careers, and for audiences

Introduction

Welcome to The Sorting Offi ce, a creative space for

creative people.

We are a thriving and dynamic studios, home to a

number of gifted artists and designer-makers from

a variety of different disciplines such as Ceramics,

Glass, Mixed Media, Jewellery, Textiles, Fashion,

Costume and Illustration.

Opened in May 2013 by internationally-renowned

designer Wayne Hemingway OBE, The Sorting Offi ce

is a place where creative things are made and

happen and people see the world differently.

Born out of a need for affordable workspace for

businesses in the creative sector, the studios were

forged from an old postal sorting offi ce in the heart

of Eastleigh Town Centre, with assistance from

Recreate, a European funding programme that aims

to bring empty commercial properties back to life by

transforming them into business clusters for artists.

Our role is to support and promote the work of our

talented residents, to give them a voice for their

unique and exciting work. Through mentorship

programmes, business advice, workshops and

exchange opportunities, we work closely with

our artists to ensure their businesses thrive and

fl ourish. We believe there should be no limit on their

ambition.

As well as providing a platform to showcase our

residents’ work, we offer a point of contact for

buyers as well as to those who wish to commission

their own piece of work.

We hope you enjoy exploring our studios, stopping

off with each of our artists and designer-makers, and

fi nding out what makes The Sorting Offi ce such an

exciting and vibrant creative space.

Ceramics

Themes of light and shade inform the work of ceramic

designer and artist Sheena Bond who specialises in direct

screen printing onto raw clay. Graduating in 2013 from

The University of Creative Arts, Farnham, with a BA in

Three Dimensional Design, this responsive designer creates

strikingly simplistic objects that appear both masculine and

feminine, contrasting yet unifi ed. Like sirens they cry out to

be touched, their form tantalising tactile.

As well as smaller pieces, Sheena creates bespoke wall

pieces for both domestic and corporate spaces. Her

large-scale work around British banknotes, inspired and

motivated by media headlines about ‘banking scandals’

and ‘the economic crisis’, saw her awarded The Society

of Designer Craftsmen Award for excellence in the work

of New Licentiates. An enthusiastic ceramicist keen to

share her passion and knowledge Sheena also runs

workshops and clay experience sessions for people,

both in small groups and one to ones.

Fine Art

Junko O’Neill

Page 14: The Sorting Office Little Black Book 2014

Fine Art

The foundation of Junko O’Neill’s work lies in the Japanese

spatial and temporal concept of Ma, in which space

is considered to be fundamentally void. The concept

considers negative space as having a form of existence,

with space perceived alongside time. It is neither time

alone or space alone. Junko expresses this concept both

in her fi gurative and abstract work, creating a feeling of air,

ambiguity and tension, a sense of alienation, impending

action and passing time. Her work provides a breathing

space for the viewer allowing them to sense the transient

nature that space possesses. Junko’s work has been widely

exhibited in the UK and abroad, including a solo show,

Fragments of Time, at GV Art, London, Berlin and Florence.

She also co-curated Space Unfolding, a group exhibition,

at Espacio Gallery in Shoreditch. She was shortlisted for

the Celeste Prize 2011 and Kudos International 2013.

distinctive, original and experimental pieces that

incorporate mixed media including collage and her

own paintings. Carly studied painting and printmaking

at Canterbury Christ Church University and her work is

infl uenced by her interest in other cultures, landscape,

ancient history, symbols, stories and myths. Her striking

work intricately weaves stories of physical artefacts and

intangible attributes of a group or society through the

cleverly crafted use of stamps, postcards and maps.

Illustrator Denise Hughes is a fi ne art graduate from

Winchester School of Art working in mixed media using

watercolours, acrylics and paper cutting. Her charming,

joyful, character-driven illustrations, primarily featuring

children and animals, are featured across a range of

greetings cards, giftwrap and giftware and sold worldwide

under the brand Denise Hughes Illustration. Her simple yet

effective designs are inspired by her own children and her

love of animals and infl uenced by the work of children’s

book illustrators David Tazzyman and Quentin Blake.

Each one invites the viewer to enter a world of adventure

and possibility where dragons are more docile than you

think and girls with little curls and BBQ-loving bears simply

can’t help the scrapes they fall into. Denise is currently

developing a children’s book, using her own illustrations

and story idea.

Mixed Media

Exploring traditional handprinting and embroidery mixed

with modern materials such as perspex and ply, textile

and mixed-media designer, Claire Vine creates a range

of unique framed wall pieces which infl uence and inform

homeware and accessories created in limited batches

including cushions and lampshades as well as one-off

concept pieces. Driven by the now, inspired by current

trends mixed with the old, Claire’s infl uences and outcomes

are constantly evolving. Although she has a distinct style,

she likes to take an organic approach to each project and

be challenged by the possible outcomes. Each design and

art work is informed by those halcyon childhood memories

inevitably always returning to ‘home’. Her pieces aim to

jolt the memory; remind the viewer of a moment, a touch,

a sound, be imbued with a sense of other lives lived.

Visual Art

Eve Dawson is a fi ne artist whose work is a response to

the everyday interior and exterior of the self. In 2010 Eve

was a recipient of the Stephen Heffer Memorial Scholarship

that enabled a continuation of study in Fine Art at MA level

at Winchester School of Art. Each photographic or painted

mark Eve creates embodies a reaction to a particular

moment in time and a visual reference to a pattern or

surface discovered. There is an underlying preoccupation

with Phenomenology and Ontology a philosophical study of

time and being. Accompanying this interest in philosophy

are the writings of: Yve Lomax, John Dewey, Alan Kaprow
