HIM Gets a New Home

The Health Information Management Department (Medical Records) is excited to announce they have moved into their new location. HIM is now located on the first floor at the south end of the hallway next to the Sullivan Street Café.

Youth Farm DayOn Saturday, May 31, Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial partnered with Newaygo County 4-H for Youth Farm Safety Day. As part of its mission to “improve the health of the communities we serve”, Gerber Memorial donated materials for 36 First Aid kits to Newaygo County 4-H. The First Aid kits were then distributed to each family to keep and to use when needed. This donation was greatly appreciated by Newaygo County 4-H and also by the families that received the kits.

Volunteers of Time and TreasuresConstruction of Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial’s new Emergency Department (ED) is a cornerstone for the hospital’s master facility plan. While new facilities are necessary to accommodate the growth in patient visits, what goes on inside the buildings is more important.

Providing a patient-focused experience has produced a change in thinking from the patient moving to the services, to the services coming to the patient. One process that has achieved that change has come about through the generosity of the Hospital’s Auxiliary Gift Shop. Volunteer members of that group have pledged $100,000 for the purchase of a portable digital diagnostic imaging machine.

The machine will be used in the new emergency department. Specifically, patients who are in need of the equipment in the ED’s trauma rooms will not have to be moved into the radiology room for x-rays. The portable imaging machine will come to them in these rooms and take the x-rays while the patient remains on special diagnostic imaging stretchers in those rooms. This is an improved safety measure made available due to the gift from the hospital’s auxiliary.

Proceeds from Gerber Memorial’s Gift Shop are directed to specific needs of the hospital. Over the years, the Gift Shop volunteers have donated over $500,000 to the hospital. Most recently, another lead gift of $100,000 was made toward the purchase of digital mammography equipment in the hospital’s Women’s Center.

Gift Shop volunteers present first payment on $100,000 pledge.

Golfers are a hardy lot! Participants at our 14th Annual Golf Scramble on Friday, June 20, helped to raise over $22,000 despite the cold and rainy weather. Waters Edge Golf Club in Fremont hosted this year’s “wet weather open”. The team from Hi-Lites Graphics was our overall winner with a score of 60 on a par 72 course. We are grateful to all donors, sponsors and players. The funds will go to the hospital’s Project 1 construction.

SHGM’s “Wet Weather Open” Golf Scramble

Peggie Stone Makes Lead GiftRecognizing Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial as a valuable community asset, Peggie Stone decided to give a lead gift to the hospital’s latest building project.

The two year, $9.6 million construction project, includes the remodel of the pre- and post-operative area, construction of a new emergency department and a complete overhaul of the hospital’s main entrance lobby.

The hospital’s new emergency department includes the latest technology and care approaches to ensure the safety of our patients and the highest quality services. It will have its own dedicated entrance for emergency patients, as well as an increase in the number of treatment rooms. Patients will experience more privacy, improved sight lines with the nurses’ station and an improved flow of treatment.

Mrs. Stone is very sensitive to the quality of life of the senior members of our community as well as the very young. Her gift to the hospital’s current building project supports those concerns. The emergency department has seen a dramatic rise in visits over the last several years. A quarter of those visits were by children, and another significant portion by the elderly.

The mission of The Gerber Foundation is “to enhance the quality of life of infants and young children in nutrition, care and development.” Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial’s mission is to “improve the health of the communities it serves.”

Both missions came together in a partnership to provide special care for young children in the hospital’s new emergency department (ED). The Gerber Foundation approved the decision to support the implementation of nitrous oxide in four exam rooms of the new ED to help calm young children who need emergency services with a grant award.

The pediatric population visits to the Gerber Memorial emergency department accounted for approximately 24 percent of all visits last year for various conditions and injuries. In treating children, Gerber Memorial strives to provide a “child-friendly” atmosphere to reduce the stress often associated with a hospital visit. To reach that goal, a nitrous oxide process for quick pain relief for pediatric patients in the ED is being implemented. The addition of this process will improve the emergency experience for both the young patient and his or her family. Nitrous oxide is fast acting and the patient feels the effects of the drug within a few minutes, making the experience much more positive for the patient and the parents.

Mrs. Stone’s latest gift adds a new dimension to her legacy at the hospital. Not only has she contributed to the soon-to-be “old emergency department’s construction” almost 15 years ago, she also supported the building of Tamarac, The Center for Health and Well-Being.

Peggie spent her formative years growing up in the Fremont community where her father was a senior executive at Gerber Products Company. After finishing college she worked in the Gerber shipping area and was a clothing buyer for two different department stores in Grand Rapids. After living many years in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she returned home to Fremont in 1981.

Since reclaiming Fremont as home, Peggie has been a staunch supporter and advocate for many charitable organizations. "I like to give to organizations that help a lot of people, not just a few. I like to help everybody,” Peggie stated.

Peggie is well known for her generosity in the community over the years, with gifts to the Fremont Area District Library, the Newaygo Medical Care Facility and so many other causes dear to her. Her lead gift to the hospital’s latest expansion has attracted many other philanthropic gifts from the community.

Members of the Heritage Committee, which makes decisions and recommendations for The Gerber Foundation’s West Michigan grants, said they “appreciated the opportunity to make the ED experience better for children and their parents during what can be a very stressful time.”

The new emergency department is part of an almost $10 million construction project that includes a remodel of the pre- and post-operative area, construction of a new emergency department and a complete overhaul of the hospital’s main entrance lobby.

The hospital’s new emergency department includes the latest technology and care approaches to ensure the safety of our patients and the highest quality services. It will have its own dedicated entrance for emergency patients, as well as an increase in the number of treatment rooms.

A June 29 Grand Opening was held for the community to see how gifts of all sizes have helped “Build Greater Possibilities” for emergencies at Gerber Memorial.

The Invocation was given by Fremont High School Principal, Scott Sherman.

For the well-attended Outpatient Open House, kudos go to Interim Nursing Director, Yvonne Watkins, and her “guide” staff of Tiffany Romain, CNA, Rebecca Schmidt, RN, Shelly Garvey, RN, and Patty Moon, RN, (who worked the ED celebration).

The marvelous decorations, that followed the ribbon cutting theme throughout the ED, were due to the huge effort of Hospital Gift & Coffee Shop Coordinator, Sherri Anderson-Patterson.

The well-attended ED tour was made possible by ED Clinical Manager, Peggy Muckey and her ED staff “guides”: Laurie Higgins, RN, James Bearup, RN, Amy Kurnat, RN, Julie Mulder, RN, and Jessica Dejounge, RN. Manning the new admission desk as guides were Office Services Director, Maryann Huss and Patient Registration Specialist, Ginger Karrip. Janiece Zahrt, manager, nutrition services, helped coordinate logistics between the food caterer (Gala Gourmet) and Gerber dining room kitchen.

And a very special thanks to our generous volunteers who gave of their time to help out: Rita VanBoven, Bill Conant, Dale Weaver, Nevonda Lankhorst, Diane Taylor, Judy Hoezee, Peg Burmeister and Joan Wrozeck.

To make possible the construction of these new facilities are many people who donated to the building fund. You can find the most current list of donors below.

We are pleased to announce that the new Emergency Department at Gerber Memorial Hospital passed a major milestone this week. On Monday, we received our official certification for occupancy from the State Health Department. This means that the new unit is ready for patients and staff, although there are still a few things left to complete before the new department is opened.

Inside the building, Elzinga & Volkers and its team of trade contractors are completing the punch list, which is a list of small repairs and adjustments that need to be made to the building. Some examples of these small items include paint touch up and hanging final wall mounted accessories.

As the Gerber Memorial staff experiences the space for the first time, the construction team is making small tweaks to medical equipment and

monitor locations in an effort to make the new space as efficient as possible for patient care.

On the exterior of the building, security cameras landscaping are being installed. Final touches on the parking lot include striping, signage and a thorough cleaning. This final area of construction will start in the third week of July.

We hope everyone enjoyed the public open house this weekend and got a chance to see the new unit in person. If you were unable to attend, we will continue sharing photos of the new space in these final issues of New Views and on our Facebook page!

QUALITY CONTROLThe State of Michigan has jurisdiction over construction projects at licensed hospitals. When plans for a new addition or renovation are first created, they are reviewed by an engineer in Lansing before being sent to a regional inspector. Once the construction is complete, the regional inspector comes to the project site and ensures compliance with both the design and health codes. This process is yet another level of verification that the new unit is safe for patient use.

SAFETY SPOTLIGHTAs mentioned in the executive summary, security devices are currently being installed around the new emergency department. The security system includes automatic locking door hardware, bullet proof glass and digital security cameras. Because the ED is open 24 hours and becomes the main hospital entrance at night, it is important that the unit is secure and safe for patients and staff.

Two Week Look AheadED Addition:With construction substantially complete on the inside of the new Emergency Department, final testing, tweaking and equipment start-ups will take place in preparation for the opening. The next two weeks will be a time of transition for the hospital as Elzinga & Volkers’ trade contractor partners wrap up work on the exterior of the building.

Summit Landscaping will add the finishing touches to the exterior with the irrigation system and plantings. Michigan Paving will stripe the parking lot, turning the open sea of black asphalt into defined parking spaces and drive areas for the emergency drop off and EMS Drive. Valley City Sign will install signage to help patients become familiar with the new flow of traffic. Once the transition is made into the new facility, crews will shift over to the existing hospital lobby for a quick renovation and completion of the new drive adjacent to this portion of the building. Stay tuned for more information on this renovation as it begins to come together in the upcoming weeks!

TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHTIn this issue, we would like to thank the marketing staff at Gerber Memorial. In conjunction with Elzinga & Volkers, the marketing staff published “New Views” monthly in the Gerber Memorial newsletter which kept the staff and community informed on the project’s progress. The marketing team was also responsible for some great events that marked the beginning and completion of the project. They also braved some wild weather to host their annual golf outing with all of the proceeds going right back into the hospital’s expansion plans. Thank you from Elzinga & Volkers for including us in your marketing efforts and making us truly feel like part of the team!
