Wives Are ActiveSummer has not stopped the

Pharmacy Wives organization. Two summer get-togethers have been held inviting all student pharmacy wives and faculty women and wives.

An active baseball game and good picnic food made an enjoyable June evening at the park for about forty girls. The July covered-dish supper was for husbands and children, too. Horse shoes, volley ball, soft ball, croquet, and swimming were the activities participated in after the meal.

A new slate of officers, elected at the April meeting last spring, have begun plans for the coming school year. The first event planned for the fall is the annual invitational tea to be held September 25.

Many of the local merchants are co-operating with the o r ganization to have a fashion show at the tea. Sports clothes, church and after-five dresses are all included in the show.

A variety of interesting programs for the year are now in the making by the program committee.

The president for 1969-1970 is Mrs. Terry Richardson, Mul- vane, Kansas. Other officers include vice-president, Mrs. Rein- hard McKinney, Lamesa, Texas; secretary, Mrs. Huston Anderson, Borger, Texas; treasurer, Mrs. John Gunter, Los Alamos, New Mexico; historian, Mrs. Dan Willis, Blackwell; parliamentarian, Mrs. Frank Peterman, Rush Springs; and reporter, Mrs. Loyd Applegate, Weatherford.

Dean CommentsThe end of the school year is rapidly approaching, and

members of the Class of 1969 will soon leave us to assume their place in our profession and in society. This is a good class, and 1 feel sure that its members will continue in the traditions o f excellence, leadership, and service which have always distinguished those who bear the ” Southwestern Pharmacist” brand.

The Class of 1969 already possesses several distinctions. It is the first class in which a significant number of its members took advantage of our expanded summer program and com pleted their academic work at mid-year. It is also the first class to have had the Health Professions Scholarship and Loan programs available for their assistance throughout all of their last three years of professional education. Furthermore, it is the first class afforded the opportunity to study Clinical Pharmacy in a hospital setting at our affiliate teaching in stitution, St. Anthony Hospital.

The Class o f 1969 also possesses an additional noteworthy distinction. It will be the last class to graduate before com - pletion of the new wing to our building, which upon completion will nearly double the size of our present physical facilities.

The new addition, coupled with the remodeled existing physical plant, will provide instructional facilities of which all Southwestemers and all of pharmacy can be proud. To our new and old alums alike we say, ” Come and look.”

Good luck, and God's blessing to all!

FTC Sets“Sale”Limitations

New limitations on use of the term “ sale” in advertisements have been established by the Federal Trade Commission as a means of eliminating possible consumer deception. The Commission is specifically concerned about ads which list both reduced priced and regularly priced merchandise under the heading “ sale,” thus tending to create the impression that every item covered by the ad is offered at a “ bargain” price. Multi-product advertisements offering reduced and regularly priced items may not use the term “ sale” or words of similar import unless items not reduced are clearly set off and identified, and the “ sale” representation is clearly and conspicuously qualified by an adjacent statement which indicates that all items are not reduced.

APhA Hears Hanson

The February meeting of A PhA was held at 7:30 in the Student Center Ballroom.

Mr. Kenneth Hanson was the guest speaker, in place of H inton Rankin, who had to remain in Washington, D. C., to testify before the Bureau of the Budget.

Mr. Hanson is the acting chief chemist in the Dallas District of the Food and Drug Administration. Of the 17 other chemists, he is the only one having a background in pharmacy. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy in 1949, and practiced pharmacy in Denver before joining the FDA.

Before taking Mr. Foster’ s place as chief chemist, Mr. Hanson had extensive studies in drug analysis, pesticide residue, determinations and radioactive fallout studies of the FDA.

Refreshments were served by the Kappa Psi pledge class.

Dear Alumni and Friends:Did you ever stop to consider where you might be today if

you were not a pharmacist? Hasn't pharmacy been good to you? If it has not, read no further. If it has, isn't it time for you to give something back to pharmacy? Members of our sister professions of medicine, dentistry, osteopathy, and optometry consider it the rule, rather than the exception, to contribute regularly to the support of their own professional schools. They have recognized the fact that top quality education for the professions can no longer be maintained by schools which must depend solely upon income from tuition and state appropriations. Like the icing on the cake, it's that little bit extra which makes for distinction. It provides those badly needed laboratory instruments and equipment for which no other funds are available, matching money to bring in Federal and private philanthropic grants, help for that capable student who can not continue in school without assistance, and many other things. And more than this, it gives each contributor the satisfaction of having a vital part in perpetuating, molding, and shaping the future of his profession.

Remodeling of our present facilities and construction of a new wing to our building are now in progress. We need help now, and this is the time to help--to give something back to pharmacy--by contributing to the School of Pharmacy through the Southwestern Pharmacy Foundation of Southwestern State College. If each alumnus and friend of Southwestern will give generously according to his means and his personal obligation to the profession of pharmacy, we can easily exceed our goal of $100,000 in pledges and cash by 1971. Many are already giving, or have given, and to them we are most grateful. Several have paid off one pledge, and have again pledged and are paying a second time.

Contributions of any amount are welcome and appreciated. Special recognition will be given to all past and new contribu - tions of $100 or more, in the form of a beautiful acknowledgment certificate, suitable for framing. Names of those persons who give $300 or more will be inscribed on a permanent plaque to be located in the new addition to our building. An honor roll of contributors will be published in the 1969 edition of "The Apothecary."

Pledges over a three-year period are suggested, with payments on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis. Contributions are tax deductible.

Complete and mail the pledge form at right with your first payment today. You, and we, and generations yet unborn, will be glad you did.

Thank you for your loyalty and support.

Sincerely,

W. L. Dickison, Dean

Ruling on Society Membership

Guidance for professional societies in judging membership applications was provided recently by a California Appellate Court. The suit involved an orthodontist who applied for membership in an orthodontist society and was rejected without explanation. The court held that the association was clothed with public interest and must meet the judicial standards of fairness and reasonableness in approving applications. Membership standards must be expressed and professionally relevant, said the court, and a showing of just cause made if the application is rejected.
