FROM THE PASTOR

Dear St. Luke Family,

I would like to thank you all for the warm welcome you’ve given me since my arrival as your interim pas-

tor. I’ve always said that it was a pleasure to visit here; how much more so to be here among you full

time!

While I’ve gotten to know many of you already, I’m still learning names and meeting people. So, it has

been suggested that I introduce myself in this, my first newsletter message.

I grew up in Altoona and graduated from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in second-

ary education (I would eventually teach both chemistry and math). While at college, I was introduced to

a campus ministry organization that rejuvenated my faith life. I would eventually take a temporary leave

from my teaching career to work for that organization for three years at Westminster College in New

Wilmington, PA. You could say that this experience laid the groundwork for my later career with Ly-

coming College.

After returning to teaching, I bounced around to various day-to-day and long term substitute jobs before

landing a permanent position teaching math to junior high school students in Alexandria, PA. It only took

one year for me to decide that I wasn’t cut out for that age level. That experience, combined with my

history of campus ministry and my involvement in my home church, eventually led me to conclude that I

was being called to the ordained ministry. So, just before the turn of the century, I enrolled in Wesley

Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. I graduated in 2003, having also served for four years as a stu-

dent pastor at three country churches near Bedford, PA. After graduating, I was appointed to the First

United Methodist Church in Jersey Shore, which I served for four years before returning to college minis-

try at Lycoming College. I was there from November of 2007 until earlier this year.

I live alone with my two cats (Jake and Ginger), but I am fortunate that all of my remaining immediate

family live in Lycoming County. My brother (Joe) came to Montoursville to take a job as a pharmacist at

the then Susquehanna Health System the same year I moved to Jersey Shore. He has three daughters

(Alexandra, Cate, and Emmy), ranging in age from 12 to 15. I have been very blessed to have been a part

of my niece’s lives. My mother (Gerda) moved to South Williamsport in 2012, a year after the death of

my father to cancer (Leonard).

As you may have guessed from my mother’s name first name, I have some German heritage. In fact, in

spite of the spelling of my last name (I’ll tell you the story about that if you ask), my family background is

mostly British and German – even on the LeCrone side. As a result, there is actually a history of Luther-

anism in my family! While my parents were both raised in Methodist churches, I had one grandparent on

each side who was Lutheran! So, I guess you could say that I have it in my blood!

I look forward to getting to know you all better and being in ministry together over the coming months!

Hello from the Preschool!

A new school year has started with happy faces and a new teacher. In the month of September, we learned all about Preschool. Our letter for the month was an A and it is for Apples which also shows the color red. We are also learned how to make new friends. The shape of the month was a circle which we make when we have circle time. The Story Mobile has made two stops at our preschool bringing all sorts of stories to encourage reading. In October we will be taking a field trip to the Pumpkin Patch on the 12th and having a fall celebration on the 31st. We will also meet Pastor Jeff for the first-time during chapel. Our theme for October is fabulous fall and we will get to meet firemen when we learn about fire safety. Thank you to everyone who purchased mums from our fundraiser. Many were purchased to decorate the Church gardens. Our next fundraiser is the pancake breakfast on November 3rd, 2018 7:30AM to 11:33AM. Quote from the preschool: We are like a box of crayons, each one of us is Unique, and when we get together, our classroom (church) is complete. What crayon are you?

G O D ’ S H a n d i w o r k

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. —

PSALM 19:1 (ESV)

I t has been a privilege to raise our family in beautiful British Columbia. We are blessed with diverse

and amazing places to enjoy, and we experience God’s creation right in our own backyard. Ever since

my children were young, we have celebrated outdoor adventures together as a family. I remember tak-

ing them for walks around the glistening emerald lakes. I remember buckling up their boots and untan-

gling their skis. I remember sitting around evening campfires and strumming a guitar while their tired

heads nodded off to sleep. These times have brought us together to stand in awe of God’s beauty

around us.

In winter, when the clouds part, we can see endless snowcapped mountains towering above us.

There is nothing more exhilarating than making fresh powdery tracks down the mountainside with our

skis, inhaling and exhaling breaths of crisp air, feeling the fresh chilly breezes on our faces, and listening

to nature speak its own language. During the summer months, these mountains are transformed into

moss-carpeted rain forests, which allow for endless hours of hiking, cycling, fishing, and camping. We

can watch a vibrant sun setting over a rich, rugged landscape dotted with pristine lakes and rivers.

The song “Creation Calls” by Brian Doerksen invites us to take in stunning glimpses of God’s master-

piece, glimpses that then allow us to glorify, worship, and draw our minds to new places of intimacy with

him. The last words of the song—“I believe just like a child”—invite us to come back to a childlike state

of awe. Returning to the lakesides and mountains year after year, generation after generation—these

things help us enjoy the simple pleasures of this earth with our children and grandchildren, build lifelong

memories, and share God’s truth.

There is nothing like the feeling of standing in the great outdoors and listening to the voice of God.

Such moments of intimacy reinforce my relationship with God the Creator.

PRAY SAVOR

Thank you, Creator God, for your mar-

velous creation. I am in awe of the

beauty of your world.

Where have you felt most in awe of

God’s creation?

Church Ladies News and Review

September, 2018

Flowers Everywhere!

Tea and Posies in the Garden

Many thanks to Susan Anderson for hosting

the Church Ladies in her beautiful garden

for tea and to Sarah Young for sharing her

knowledge of floral arranging. We had beau-

tiful weather, flowers to share and delicious

nibbles and tea. A tour of Susan and Dan’s

beautiful home capped off the afternoon

and we all had beautiful bouquets to take

home.

WHO ARE THE CHURCH LADIES

Of

Trinity Episcopal Church ?

The “Church Ladies” are a social group

with a mission of fostering community

and friendship among women of faith. The idea for the group sprang from conversations cen-

tered on the desire to get to know one another outside of the important, but often stressful, work

of church committees and fundraisers. Church Lady gatherings tend to revolve around a shared meal

at the home of a volunteer hostess and are scheduled every 3-4 months. We have no set agenda for

these gatherings, but smaller groups within the Church Ladies form when common interests arise or

a community need is identified. The group is open to all women who might enjoy some "girl

time" with our community. Ideas are welcome for “themed” gatherings and volunteer

hostesses are encouraged!

Feel free to contact Suzan McGary or Miki Rebeck (Trinity Episcopal Church) if you have sugges-

tions for activities or wish to volunteer to host a gathering. (next pg. )

What’s next?

We have 2 opportunities to gather together in October:

YWCA

Join us at the YWCA on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13TH , FROM 12:30PM TO

3PM. We’ll bring food to share for lunch and hear from Dawn Linn, the CEO. She will

be speaking on the Y’s mission to serve and empower women in our community

through Wise Options, a safe haven for victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and

violent crime, and Liberty House, a transitional home for homeless women and chil-

dren. After that, we are invited to SHOP! The YWCA is home to The Boutique where

gently used items are sold to help support the programs offered. If you’d like to come

early, The Boutique opens at 10am. Good food, good company, and a good cause…plus,

shopping! Watch for sign-up sheets as we get closer to the date!

FALL FOLIAGE TRAIN EXCURSION

We’re still hammering out the details for this one, but on October 27 and 28th the

Chamber of Commerce offers leaf peeping train excursions starting at Maynard Street

and travelling to and from either Jersey Shore or Muncy depending on the time (either

noon for Muncy or 3pm for JS). Wouldn’t it be fun to get enough people (guys and

gals!) to reserve our own car? We’ll be polling everyone to determine date and time

that suits the majority. The cost is $15 per person.

As always, if you know of someone who would like to join us, please bring them along!

These events are not limited to members of

Trinity.

Janet Poole has a straight rail lift chair, for sale. This is ideal for steps or tradi-tionally straight staircases. Her daugh-ter would like a member or family of a member to have the option of buying it first, before placing an ad. It is in VERY good condition, and rarely used.

If anyone is interested or has ques-tions, please call her daughter, Barbara Files 713-468-5893. If they wish to see it, please contact the caregiver, Cortney Borrosco 570-220-8256 for a conven-ient time.

Thank you!

Barbara
