MESSAGE FROM FATHER
“Time to Retire”
In Eccl. 3:1, we hear there is a “time for every purpose under the sun”. By the end of the Summer I will have completed thirty-seven years of priesthood. Twenty-seven of those years I will have served at St. Katherine. The time has arrived for me to retire. This I will do at the end of August. My decision to retire is a difficult one. Over the years I have developed many fond relationships in the parish. It has been my pleasure and blessing to have served you. Over my tenure we have faced many challenges. Building programs and financial challenges are to name but a few. With God’s help and that of our patron saint- St. Katherine the Great Martyr and All Wise, we have found our way through these challenges. You have given me great pleasure and fulfillment by letting me be a part of your lives. Over the course of my ministry, I have experienced immense joy performing your baptisms, weddings, forty-day blessings and being present for your anniversaries and celebrations. Yet even during the difficult task of performing funerals for our loved ones who have departed this life, I was honored to serve you. I have had the vantage point of watching many of our youth grow and mature into young adulthood. It has been uplifting to see your zeal for the Faith and your dedication to St. Katherine. By and large, the joys I have experienced far outweigh the small crosses I have had to carry. Who will become our new head priest? The answer to this question, I do not have. I know there are several priestly candidates who have expressed interest in the parish. I know that His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos will carefully consider with who He will replace me. I am sure that whomever he will be, he will have the grace and gifts to amply serve our parish. His Eminence’s decision, obviously, has been delayed by the major distraction of having to navigate His parishes and the Metropolis of San Francisco through COVID-19. I anticipate He will be meeting with our Parish Council in the near future. What will I do in retirement? I, probably, will continue to live in the Southeast valley. You will see me from time to time. From time-to-time I may be called upon to substitute for the various parishes in the valley. Be assured that whatever Presbytera Maria and I decide to do, you will be in our prayers.
Love in Christ,
+Fr. Phil

Altar Boy Ministry Why should a boy participate as an Altar Boy in the Orthodox Church?
• An Altar Boy is dedicated as a server to the Priest in the Sanctuary. You serve the Priest as the angels serve God.
• You are as close to the holiest places and to the most sacred actions as any man can be. • As an Altar Boy you are enriching your own spiritual life and nourishing love for
Christ and His Holy Church. • You are continuing a tradition of the early Altar boys who dedicated themselves as
servers to the Priest and sacred work in the Sanctuary. All boys ages 8-18 years of age are encouraged to become an Altar Boy and serve the Lord like the angels that are above. In Christ, Nicholas Kretsedemas Contact information: [email protected] / 480-213-2061
