Dear Beloved of God,

I want to reiterate for you some important information regarding the Archdiocese’s Capital Campaign. For the past several months, during the Intercessory prayers we have been praying for the “On the Way, ‘Andale!” Capital Campaign. Archbishop Gustavo has asked each of us, both clergy and laity, to give generously to the first capital campaign in over 60 years in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The archdiocese currently serves a growing population of 2.6 million people in 19 counties throughout South Central Texas. Over the next decade, nearly 200,000 Catholics are expected to move into our area. Our growth as a faith community is truly a blessing! Extensive investment is needed to continue to meet the human and spiritual needs of the faithful in our area. This Archdiocesan Capital Campaign is not the same as the Archbishop’s Appeal, nor is it the same as the Increased Offering program we’ve had here at Notre Dame the past two years. Archbishop Gustavo is asking all Catholics in the Archdiocese of San Antonio to contribute to this Capital Campaign to help make several improvements in and around the Archdiocese. The Archdiocesan Capital Campaign began last year, and has proceeded in “waves” throughout the Archdiocese. Earlier this year was the “Pilot” program, followed by waves 1 and 2. Here at Notre Dame, we are in Wave 3 which begins the weekend of November 10-11. There have been some workshops for priests and parish staff on how to conduct the campaign at our parishes that I and some staff members have attended. We also have a Capital Campaign committee, and many volunteers to help get the campaign going. The Capital Campaign is needed to prepare for projected growth in the archdiocese. There are many areas where there is an increasing population, but the nearest parish is at least a 45-minute drive away. Many parishes that are so far away are also overcrowded in both seating and parking. New parishes will alleviate some of this overcrowding. Other areas the Capital Campaign is intended to address include improvements to church buildings, to help fund Catholic Charities and priest pensions, to modernize Assumption Seminary, and to strengthen campus ministry and improve our Catholic schools. One of the other benefits to our parish is that however much Notre Dame contributes, we get one third back for capital projects here at our own parish. The goal of the Capital Campaign is to raise $60 million to meet these needs. Archbishop Gustavo asks that we all make a pledge to the campaign which will be a matter of making a monthly contribution for the next three years. Let us all make a sacrifice to the Archdiocesan Capital Campaign to support Archbishop Gustavo and the Archdiocese of San Antonio to improve our archdiocese, our parish and to strengthen Christ’s One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church in South Texas.

Muchas gracias,Muchas gracias,Muchas gracias,Muchas gracias, Padre David.Padre David.Padre David.Padre David.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Monday 11:00 p.m.—12:00 midnight Friday 12:00 midnight—1:00 a.m.

Friday 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

lunes 11:00 p.m.—12:00 media noche viernes 12:00 media noche—1:00 a.m.

viernes 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

Some frequently asked questions about the On the Way- ¡Andale! Capital Campaign: How are the parish targets set and how much is my parish going to receive? The campaign target for each parish is established at 1.3 times its average offertory for the last three fiscal years. Parishes with a three-year average offertory of $500,000 or less will receive 40% offertory between $500,000 and $1.3 million will receive 35%; and those with an offertory over $1.3 million will receive 30%. If the parish does not reach their monetary target, is it responsible for the difference? Parishes will not be assessed penalties if they do not reach their fundraising target. The expectation is that parishes put forth a good faith effort to follow the recommendations of the archdiocese and the Steier Group in conducting the campaign. Will funds for the On the Way-¡Andale! Capital Campaign reduce offertory support for the parish? In presenting the campaign, it will be important to emphasize that all gifts to this campaign should not reduce other giving commitments to the Church. A gift to the campaign is an extraordinarily generous gift made freely and faithfully to meet the extraordinary challenges and opportunities presented through the campaign.

All Saints Paul Turner

In designating one day on our calendar for all the saints, the church chooses a time to honor our heroes—the men and women whose example we admire. Coming near the end of the church year, the solemnity of All Saints invites us into the mystery of death and the promise of eternal life. An early tradition placed the festival on May 13. According to one story, Pope Boniface IV (himself a saint) began the celebration in Rome. On that date in 609 he dedicated a very old building as a new church. The Pantheon had been built to honor all the pagan gods, but Boniface rededicated the building as a Christian church in the seventh century. He brought the relics of the martyrs from the catacombs to this famous public place of worship. The parade of relics changed the Pantheon from a place for worship of all the pagan gods to a place that honored Mary and all the Christian saints—and in turn the one Christian God. Eventually the idea of a feast of all saints was transferred to November 1, near the end of the church year. The church honors many saints with a day of their own on the general liturgical calendar, but there are many more saints than those. Since Vatican II, the number of men and women canonized as saints has increased considerably. Although we do not celebrate all their names on specific dates in all our churches throughout the year, we do gather them as one on this day. Secular tradition has turned the eve of All Saints into a kind of anti-festival, a night when heroes of the underworld take command. The Mass for All Saints Day always replaces the one for ordinary time, even when it falls on a Sunday. Copyright © 2003 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. FIESTA DE TODOS LOS SANTOS Paul Turner

Our reflection in a mirror can be a reflection of Mary, Our Blessed Mother, in ways that you may have never considered. What kind of surrender did Mary make to become the Mother of Jesus? We may find that in our everyday lives, in the ordinary, we are extraordinary – like Mary was when she said the most important “yes” ever said. This retreat will lead women in an examination of our lives yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and how to give “our thoughts, our service to one another, our affections and loves, our words, our intellect, our waking, working, and sleeping, our ordinary human joys and sorrows to God.” Our mission is to echo and reflect Mary in our own mirror.

Parish Directories arrived several weeks ago and there are still many families who have not picked up your directory. These directories were sent for families who did come in to take their picture.

There is a waiting list of parishioners who would like a directory and if possible would like to fulfill their requests.

Please, if you took your picture, come in and pick up your book or send someone that would kindly do this for you; their name will be placed as the person picking up the book. Thanks to all who participated!

The Society of St Vincent de Paul Notre Dame Kerrville is again blessed with your generosity. The second collection was $2,891.00.

The Food Pantry is still in need of soup, canned beans; ranch, baked or refried

preferred and cereal and pasta. If you would like to be part of our ministry and cannot volunteer, please think of doing some shopping for us.

As announced last spring, we will not be sponsoring the family giving tree this year. In makes more sense to have one vetting agency for this event in town and it is the Salvation Army. Last year they qualified 600 families and we 21.

Again this year, we will be distributing small new electric heaters by our neighbors coming to our financial aid office. This will start November 1, unless we receive donations of new heaters and can start sooner. We will only distribute new heaters. We do sell working used heaters in the store.

Another need God is leading us to help with more, is supplying clothing and shoes to the women and children taken to crises shelters. This is naturally very confidential. What we are discovering is the families often come with just the clothing on their back. Usually the kids need shoes and we have not had any in the sizes needed. We are just helping 6-8 families a month with this outreach. We’ve decided to collect and save new shoes in sizes— up to 6 for girls and 7 for boys. Whatever is needed in our community we will try to fill in the gaps. And as always, it is all for God’s glory.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Marion Worthington tells us about an important encyclical from Pope Francis. Laudato Si’ is good reading for spiritual exercise because the message is “give” rather than “give up”. The consolidation of economic theory, consumerism and environ-mental issues is masterful. However, the underlying message has been ignored or denied by many (including our current president). The encyclical, though easy to read, contains global perspectives and novel analyses of problems which are quite challenging to the status quo. So it may be more fruitful to find and contemplate smaller passages that are personally meaningful than to emulate an ant swallowing an alligator. “On Care for Our Common Home”, the subtitle, reminds us that we are given this planet for all creatures to flourish, praising God together. In doing so, we acknowledge our diversity and learn so much more than when we build walls and so limit our potential.

We are challenged as individuals and as a parish to make meaningful and lasting changes in our lives and activities. Why? To make our common home better for all, to the honor and praise of God.
