The Transformation of Peter Perhaps nowhere else in the New Testament, with the exception of Paul, do we see a

greater and more complete transformation of a man than in Peter. Here was a man who loved Jesus, who pledged total commitment to him, even to the death. But then, Peter denied Jesus at the crucial moment and turned and ran. Now, in the days after Jesus had risen from the dead and appeared to the twelve and to others, after He ascended into heaven, and after the Holy Spirit had come at Pentecost, Peter is a completely and totally transformed man. He can now be found preaching to the people in Jerusalem that Jesus has been raised from the dead. Peter very publicly begins proclaiming the good news that everyone can likewise be raised from the dead by God. And he does more than that. In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter actually healed a crippled beggar. Peter and John were going to the Temple to pray and this man saw them. The man was a beggar and had been asking all who passed by him for money. When Peter saw this man, he said to him, “I have no silver and gold, but I give you what I have: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” And then Peter took the man by the hand, raised him up and the man’s legs and feet were strengthened and he walked. And the man who had been crippled praised God and he went in with them to pray. The world operates on gold and silver. Others gave the crippled man gold and silver and he remained crippled. Peter gave the man not the world’s currency, but deliverance from whatever it was that was crippling him. It was given in the name of Jesus Christ. And when the man was restored, he went into the Temple and praised God. Jesus told his disciples that they would do the things He did, that they would do even greater things. Here Peter is doing what Jesus foretold. And once again, it caught the attention of the authorities. The authorities do not seem to be particularly glad that Peter healed a crippled man. Their greatest concern is to find out by what power or authority Peter did it, and in whose name he did it. They’re very aware of the conflict. They should be. This authority is none other than the Sanhedrin. The very same court, very likely the very same people who condemned Jesus to death just a few weeks prior, now called Peter to give an account. And now Peter, who had previously feared the Sanhedrin and hid from them, now stands before them and speaks and behaves not as the one on trial, but as their judge. The one who denied Jesus three times now himself stands before the same tribunal that condemned Jesus to death and boldly declares as a matter of fact that it’s in the name of Jesus that he has done this. Peter takes no credit for what happened. Jesus healed the man, he tells them. Yes, the same Jesus you put to death, the same Jesus God raised from the dead, he says to the Sanhedrin. You can’t get much bolder than that. And here’s the capper. Peter makes the boldest, most in-your-face proclamation of the truth yet: “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Peter exemplifies the salvation of which he speaks. Salvation means a total transformation of the entire person such as we see in Peter. Only Jesus Christ gives that. And salvation means that the Holy Spirit will fill us also, just like Peter.

Christ is risen, He brings salvation and He is with us! Amen.

La transformación de San Pedro

Quizás en ningún otro lugar en el Nuevo Testamento, con la excepción de San Pablo, vemos una transformación más grande y más completa de un hombre que en San Pedro. Aquí había un hombre que amaba a Jesús, que se comprometió totalmente con Él, incluso hasta la muerte. Pero luego, San Pedro negó a Jesús en el momento crucial y dio media vuelta y echó a correr.

Ahora, en los días después de que Jesús resucitó de entre los muertos y se apareció a los doce y a los demás, después de ascender al cielo, y después de que el Espíritu Santo había venido en Pentecostés, San Pedro es un hombre completamente transformado. Ahora se le puede encontrar predicando a la gente en Jerusalén que Jesús ha resucitado de entre los muertos. San Pedro públicamente comienza a proclamar la buena nueva de que todos pueden ser resucitados de la muerte por Dios.

Y Él hace más que eso. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles, San Pedro en realidad sanó a un mendigo lisiado. San Pedro y San Juan iban al Templo a orar y este hombre los vio. El hombre era un mendigo y había estado pidiendo dinero a todos los que pasaban junto a él. Cuando San Pedro vio a este hombre, le dijo: "No tengo plata ni oro, pero te doy lo que tengo: en el nombre de Jesucristo de Nazaret, levántate y anda". Y entonces San Pedro tomándole por la mano derecha le levantó, y al momento las piernas y los pies del hombre se fortalecieron y él caminó. Y el hombre lisiado alabó a Dios y entró con ellos a orar.

El mundo opera con oro y plata. Otros dieron al hombre lisiado oro y plata y él quedó lisiado. San Pedro le dio al hombre no la moneda del mundo, sino la liberación de lo que sea que lo estaba paralizando. Fue dado en el nombre de Jesucristo. Y cuando el hombre fue restaurado, entró al Templo y alabó a Dios.

Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos que harían las cosas que hizo, que harían cosas aún mayores. Aquí San Pedro está haciendo lo que Jesús predijo. Y una vez más, llamó la atención de las autoridades. Las autoridades no parecen estar contentas de que San Pedro haya sanado a un hombre lisiado. Su mayor preocupación es descubrir con qué poder o autoridad San Pedro lo hizo, y en nombre de quién lo hizo. Están muy conscientes del conflicto. Ellos deberían ser. Esta autoridad no es otra que el Sanedrín. La misma corte, muy probablemente la misma gente que condenó a Jesús a la muerte unas pocas semanas antes, ahora llamaba a San Pedro para pedirle cuentas.

Y ahora, San Pedro, que anteriormente había temido al Sanedrín y se había escondido de ellos, ahora se para frente a ellos y habla y se comporta no como el que está en juicio, sino como su juez. El que negó a Jesús tres veces ahora se presenta ante el mismo tribunal que condenó a muerte a Jesús y declara con valentía, de hecho, que es en el nombre de Jesús que ha hecho esto. San Pedro no tiene crédito por lo que sucedió. Jesús sanó al hombre, les dice. Sí, al mismo Jesús a quien le dieron muerte, el mismo Jesús Dios resucitó de entre los muertos, le dice al Sanedrín. No podía ser mucho más audaz que eso.

Y aquí está lo extraordinario. San Pedro hace la más atrevida, la más cara proclamación de la verdad de todas: "No hay salvación en nadie más, porque no hay otro nombre bajo el cielo dado entre los hombres por el cual debemos ser salvos".

San Pedro ejemplifica la salvación de la que él habla. La salvación significa una transformación total de la persona como la que vemos en San Pedro. Solo Jesucristo la da. Y la salvación significa que el Espíritu Santo nos llenará también, al igual que San Pedro.

¡Cristo ha resucitado, Él trae la salvación y Él está con nosotros! Amén.

books for 2017”: At the Existentialist Café:

Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails, by

Sarah Blackwell.

“If a lot of people with incompatible interests

all claim that right is on their side, how do you

decide between them?” This is one of the

challenges in this “breezy and brainy” review of

Existentialism – something we gave up thinking

about a long time ago, if, indeed, we ever

thought about it. Once reduced to a cynical “So

what?” concept, this book traces the attempt to

describe who and what we are and what the

world is with close encounters with the major

contributors.

Is Existentialism relevant today? The

influence of this school of thought on literature,

movies and above all, politics, makes study of

this topic more important than ever before. The

book is a challenge to use our brains to think and

discuss things outside the latest news,

propaganda, car-pool and our usual comfort

zone. The anguished plea in our own Social

Center last year – “Why don’t you just tell us

how to vote?” – epitomizes our failure to live up

to our potential and take responsibility for our

actions. “No excuses” is one of the themes in

this exhilarating and inspiring book.

You may pick a chapter or skim, helped by the

non-studio photographs (a nod to “authenticity”)

or proceed slowly and thoughtfully, perhaps

prayerfully, and you will certainly be rewarded

by new insights. Now the background to de

Gaulle’s request to Truman to become involved

in French Indochina can be seen in the context of

post WWII fear in Europe and how Nazi-ism

could co-opt Heidegger.

What is being taught in schools and

universities truly has effects on how tomorrow

we build. Let us all be part of the discussion.
