2018 Lumen Gentium Award
Each year Archbishop Gustave gives a “Light to the Nations” (Lumen Gentium) award to one member of each parish in the Archdiocese. The award is given to one individual in thanksgiving for their parochial service to witness to the Light of Jesus Christ to all in our parish community. The pastor in each parish selects the individual who is to receive this award. I am quite pleased to announce that Eva Bill is this year’s Lumen Gentium award recipient. I nominated Eva for her solid devotion to Notre Dame, her strong faith, and for her going above and beyond the call of duty to be as helpful as she can. Please join me in giving thanks to God for Eva and for all who work tirelessly in the Lord’s vineyard here at Notre Dame.
As Lent Approaches
Ash Wednesday is February 14th this year, just a few days away. As always, I ask each of you to make a personal commitment to observe a Holy Lent. Please join us for Stations of the Cross, or for a weekday Mass. You could also add an additional devotion to your personal prayer time, or do some Lectio Divina reading. A good book for a Lenten discipline is The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis or Confessions by St. Augustine. As always, reconciliation is available Saturdays from 3:30-4:45 or by appointment.

SAVE THE DATEP LENTEN MISSION
David Kauffman joins us on Monday, February 19th at 7:00 p.m. to lead us in our Lenten Mission. “The Gift in the Journey” is the theme. It’s an evening of song and story, reflection and prayer. Through our joys and challenges, we’ll discover the gifts that lay before us. David co-wrote the Mass of Renewal with William Gokelman, one of the Mass settings we frequently use here at Notre Dame. He has also written many songs for the ACTS Community including “Behold”, “Be Still”, “Come to Me”, and “You Cannot Go Below My Resting Arms.” David’s Lenten composition “Purify My Heart” actually debuted here at Notre Dame Church several years ago. All are welcome to the Lenten Mission.
Babysitting is available for children 6 and under. Call Dorothy at the office if you need this service.
BIBLE STUDY – “Jesus Revealed” continues this Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. and
Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Social Center.
FUNERAL PLANNING
There will be a funeral planning session this
Wednesday, February 7th at 10:30 a.m. in the
Fireplace Room. If you are interested in pre-
planning your church funeral services, this
will be a good time to begin the process and
get any questions answered that you may
have. Please call Dorothy at the office (257-
5961, x. 235) to let us know you are coming
so that we have a sufficient number of
packets available.
On Ash Wednesday we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports the Church in over 25 countries that are still struggling to recover in the aftermath of communist rule. Funds from this collection support pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this region. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection next week. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/ccee.
The Rosary is prayed before the Saturday Mass at 4:30 p.m. and before the first Sunday Mass at 7:15 a.m. by teams of rotating Rosary Leaders. If you would like to be part of this lovely, prayerful ministry by leading the Rosary, call Carmen Reno at 830-329-1931. When you pray united with others, your prayers are multiplied!
Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer.
The lines for the opportunity to see a rock star are indelibly long. The Star of all Stars, Jesus, humbles Himself to share a personal one on one hour, and only a few “wise virgins” fill up their lamps with this wondrous love freely given by Christ. How will He be able to recognize us at the end of our earthly exile if we become as the “foolish virgins’ who are too busy to show love and adoration for this awesome gift that is our Mighty Lord Jesus?
This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.
An adorer is needed for:
Thursday 9:00 p.m.—10:00 p.m. Thursday 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m. Saturday 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.
If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.
jueves 9:00 p.m.—10:00 p.m. jueves 10:00 a.m—11:00 a.m.
sabado 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.
Thank you for your generous support last week of the Collection for the Church in Latin America. As a parish, we collected $1,600.11, which will be used to share the faith with our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean so that they in turn can share it with others. If you missed the collection, it’s not too late to give! Just visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections and click “How to Give” on the left. Your gift will certainly make a difference!

Forty Cans for Lent St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry
Lent is almost upon us, and fasting, prayer and almsgiving are a very important part of this season of the Church.
The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is always in need of foods to distribute to the needy in our community. This is a wonderful way for all of us to participate in almsgiving and assist our neighbors. Here are some suggestions:
Beans/Dry & canned Pasta/Dry & canned Canned vegetables Rice/All types Soup/Dry & canned Canned meats
While the Pantry usually has a good supply of canned corn and green beans, more is always appreciated. One item of food each day of Lent: A small sacrifice with a huge yield!

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Emily Etchison tells us about a book she found on our shelves: Saint-Watching, by Phyllis McGinley, is a charming and fascinating book about many of the more popular Catholic saints, and a few of the lesser-known ones. I found myself carrying it with me in my purse so that I could read it anywhere I had to wait in line, and taking numerous breaks from tasks to read just a few more pages before reluctantly putting it down and returning to work. Of course, in five minutes I'd find some excuse to take a break and read a bit more. Perhaps shirking work isn't the best method of finding time to read about saints, but McGinley managed to make the tales of the saints that I've grown up with as riveting as if I had never heard of them before. The light, conversational tone of the book, as well as the many humorous anecdotes about less-famous facets of the saints' personalities, make for a refreshingly funny and wonderfully relatable look at the lives and characters of that "peculiar race," the saints.
Jim Bonura from Diocesan (the provider of our weekly bulletin) will be at our church working with sponsors. Memorial spaces are available and if you have a business or know a business that would like to sponsor the bulletin, please contact Jim. He will be here Feb. 5th – Feb. 151h. Please contact him at the church 830.257.5961 or on his cell phone 210.326.1075. As always, thank you for your support of our weekly bulletin.
