The Steamsinger

It is said that the profession of tinker is one that marriesthe analytical aspects of the mind with the creativeaspects of the mind. This causes many a tinker to combineinterests and hobbies in particularly ludicrous ways. Some take up martial combat, others the gap betweenmachine and corpse, and still others turn to music. Seeingmusic as more of a mathematical model for expressionthan the wondrous pulse of the world that bards are wontto describe it as, the steamsingers of the world are knownfor their attention to nuance and detail, intricately wovenharmonies, and the fact that their roadies and backupsingers are completely and totally mechanical.

Role: Steamsingers, being in essence a tinker with bardicperformance, aligns much more closely to the role ofminionbased mechanical mastermind than musicalwarrior. Through his steamsinger repertoire, asteamsinger finds himself relegated to more of a supportrole than the tinker, responsible for both micromanaginghis forces and keeping the appropriate music flowing overhis audience.

Alignment: Steamsingers can be of any alignment.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the steamsingerprestige class.

Inventions and Performance

The steamsinger's class level stacks with his inventionusing class levels for the determination of maximumnumber of build points per blueprint, number ofblueprints, inventions known, maximum invention levelknown, effective level of inventions, and automaton hitdie progression.

Further, the steamsinger's class level stacks with levels ofany class that grants bardic performance for thedetermination of the number of rounds of bardicperformance allowed daily, the efficacy of the inspirecourage and inspire competence bardic performances, and the ability to begin a bardic performance as a move orswift action.

Instrumental Inventions (Ex): At 1st level, asteamsinger's fascination with the realm of musicmanifests itself in the adaptation of the tools of themusical trade as inventions for his automatons. Asteamsinger may learn and inscribe these inventionsexactly like any other invention. Indeed, many nonsteamsinger tinkers find the work of the "specialists", asthey call them, to be absolutely fascinating. Though theycannot use them, the more welltodo tinkers are wont topurchase such outlandish inventions and read over theirschemata as one would a mathematical treatise from agreat natural philosopher. This demand makes suchspecialized inventions much more common than thepopulation of steamsingers would otherwise suggest.

Steamsinger Repertoire (Ex): At 1st level and everytwo levels thereafter, a steamsinger's exploration into therealm of music results in a breakthrough. Select a singleperformance or ability listed below.

Dancing Beat (Su) A steamsinger who elects to learnthis steamsinger repertoire performance can use hisperformance to play a catchy dance beat that grants asingle ally within 30 feet a +2 morale bonus to Reflexsaves. At 3rd level and every 3 levels thereafter, anadditional ally can be selected. Automatons with thedance number invention are affected by this performanceeven though they normally cannot be given a moralebonus. Dancing beat relies on audible components.

Encore (Su) A steamsinger who elects to learn thissteamsinger repertoire performance can use hisperformance to create a 30foot radius of ambientencouragement. Whenever one of the steamsinger'sautomatons is destroyed by anything other than thekamikaze directive within the radius of effect of thisperformance, there is a percent chance equal to twice thesteamsinger's ranks in the perform skill that he regains adaily use of the deploy automaton class feature. Unlikeother performances in the steamsinger repertoire, thisperformance cannot be performed by the alpha.

Energizing Melody (Su) A steamsinger who elects tolearn this steamsinger repertoire performance can use hisperformance to deploy a nonmegadroid, nongigadroidautomaton without spending a use of his deployautomaton class feature. When the steamsinger begins theperformance, he also deploys the automaton in the sameaction and can give a directive upon deployment as a freeaction. As soon as the steamsinger ceases to perform theenergizing melody, the automaton deployed using theperformance shorts out and becomes inactive. At 5thlevel, the steamsinger can deploy a megadroid in thisfashion, but expends two rounds of his bardicperformance for each round this performance ismaintained. Similarly, at 10th level, the steamsinger candeploy a gigadroid in this fashion, but expends threerounds of his bardic performance for each round thisperformance is maintained. Energizing melody relies onaudible components.

Harmonic Cadence (Su) A steamsinger who elects tolearn this steamsinger repertoire performance can use hisperformance to create a zone of harmony that extends to aradius of 60 feet from the singer. Within this zone ofharmony, the Aid Other action grants an additional +1. At5th level, if the steamsinger's alpha is also performingharmonic cadence, the area in which their radii overlapgrants a +2 bonus to the Aid Other action instead.Harmonic cadence relies on audible components.

Key Vibrations (Su) A steamsinger who elects to learnthis steamsinger repertoire performance can use hisperformance to cause a single automaton within 60 feet tohum with sonic energy. Upon the use of the kamikazedirective, the use of the contingent kamikaze greaterinnovation, or upon its destruction, the automatonexplodes, dealing 1 point of sonic damage per steamsingerlevel to all creatures in a 10foot radius with a DC 10 + 1/2the tinker's level + the tinker's Intelligence modifierReflex save for half. While charged with sonic energy, theautomaton has resistance to sonic equal to thesteamsinger's level. At 5th level and every five levelsthereafter, an additional automaton can be selected. Keyvibrations relies on audible components.

March of Progress (Su) A steamsinger who elects tolearn this steamsinger repertoire performance can use hisperformance to enhance one of his automatons within 60feet. To do so, select an invention with a build point costof 1 + 1/3 the steamsinger's level or less that "requires andreplaces" an invention already on the automaton. For theduration of the steamsinger's performance, the selectedinvention is treated as though it were part of theautomaton's blueprint. At 5th level, this performanceaffects all deployed automatons of a single blueprintinstead. March of progress relies on audible components.

Montage of the Mechanic (Su) A steamsinger who electsto learn this steamsinger repertoire performance can usehis performance to create images of repairmen plyingtheir trade on all allies within 30 feet. Each round, automatons are repaired for 1 point of damage persteamsinger level, while the most damaged piece ofequipment on each organic ally in the area of effect isrepaired for 1 point of damage per steamsinger level.

Music of the Machine (Ex) A steamsinger who elects tolearn this steamsinger repertoire ability can now fascinateconstructs with his fascinate bardic performance. Further, his alpha can now perform the fascinate bardicperformance. The alpha receives a +4 bonus to itseffective steamsinger level when playing thisperformance.

Remedial Coursework (Ex) The alpha of a steamsingerwho elects to learn this steamsinger repertoire ability cannow perform the inspire courage and inspire competencebardic performances. The alpha receives a +4 bonus to itseffective steamsinger level when playing theseperformances.

Steelskin Sonnet (Su) A steamsinger who elects to learnthis steamsinger repertoire performance can use hisperformance to grant all allies within 60 feet DR 1 + 1/3the steamsinger's level / adamantine. Steelskin sonnetrelies on audible components.

Thunderous Blast (Su) A steamsinger who elects to learnthis steamsinger repertoire performance can use hisperformance to launch a cacophonic blast of sound at asingle creature within 30 feet. Treat this as a ranged touchattack that deals 1d4 points of sonic damage persteamsinger level. All automatons with either the cymbalsor trumpet invention within 30 feet of the creature struckare given a directive to use that instrument on thecreature struck. Thunderous blast relies on audiblecomponents.

Alpha Performance (Ex): A steamsinger's incessanttraining of his alpha in the musical arts grants it a bonusto all Perform checks equal to 1/2 the steamsinger's classlevel, rounded down, as well as a bardic performance poolcontaining 1 round of bardic performance for every twosteamsinger levels the master possesses. These can beused when outside the range of the master's presenceclass feature or when the master is unconscious, dead, orotherwise incapacitated. Whenever the alpha begins toperform, if it is within the radius of the master's presenceclass feature, it can choose which bardic performancepool to use with that performance.

Should the alpha be using its master's pool and themaster falls unconscious or moves such that the alpha isnot within the radius of master's presence, the alpha canswitch to its own pool automatically.

Duet (Ex): At 3rd level, the steamsinger's incessanttraining of his alpha has resulted in the alpha's ability toperform as a steamsinger whose level is 1/2 thesteamsinger class level of its master, rounded down. Thealpha may only perform those performances granted tothe steamsinger by the steamsinger repertoire classfeature and can only perform when the master isconscious and the alpha is within the radius of themaster's presence class feature. Further, the alpha'sperformances deduct from its master's bardicperformance pool. When the master is out of bardicperformance for the day, the alpha cannot perform.Should the master fall unconscious or move such that thealpha is outside of the radius of master's presence, theperformance ends immediately.

Solo Act (Ex): At 10th level, the alpha's training hasgranted it an additional 5 rounds of bardic performance.

Steamsinger Inventions

Bongos (Instrument)1 BPInvention 2Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

The automaton has been given a pair of bongos, as well asan absolutely obligatory pair of sunglasses. As a standardaction, the automaton can play its bongos and give allallies within 30 feet a +1 morale bonus to saving throwsagainst fear effects for 1 round.

Cello (Instrument)6 BPInvention 6Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

The automaton has been given a cello. Quite frankly, itdoesn't look too excited about it. Each round, theautomaton can play the cello as a fullround action, creating a metronomic baseline sound with a radius of 30feet. Whenever a limited uses per day instrument is usedwithin the cello's area of effect, that instrument does notconsume one of its limited uses per day because thepresence of the cello's sound makes it easy to playproperly. Each time an instrument conserves a daily usein this fashion, the automaton playing the cello gets moreand more upset. Finally, after the sixth time a limited usesper day instrument has conserved a daily use, theautomaton playing the cello immediately ceases itsplaying. On its next turn, the automaton snaps the cello inhalf and starts jumping up and down on it. This is a fullround action that provokes attacks of opportunity, thoughsome intelligent creatures may find it so utterly hilariousthat they'd rather stand there and watch.

Cymbals (Instrument)2 BPInvention 2Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

The automaton has been given a pair of heavy cymbals, the sort capable of making a toddler look at her pots andpans and yearn for something greater. As a standardaction, the automaton can bash the cymbals together, making a horrible grating noise that deals 1d6 points ofsonic damage in a 5foot radius. A DC 10 + 1/2 the tinker'slevel + the tinker's Intelligence modifier Fortitude savenegates. Creatures who cannot hear, whether this is partof their anatomy or due to the deafened condition, areimmune to this invention.

Cymbal Acoustics2 BPInvention 5cymbals instrument

On a successful Fortitude save, the cymbals inventionnow deals half damage. Further, when playing thecymbals, the fire and flames and thunderstruck inventionsare not negated on a successful saving throw.

Dance Number2 BPInvention 3performance programming invention

The automaton has been taught how to dance with thebest of them and can now perform the feint action;however, rather than make a Bluff check when feinting, the automaton makes a Perform(dance) check.

Deafening Cymbals1 BPInvention 3cymbals invention

The automaton's cymbals have been altered such that theracket they make is deafening in a very literal sense. On afailed saving throw, the cymbals invention also deafensthe victim for 1 round.

Enhanced Puddleflute (Instrument)3 BPInvention 5puddleflute invention

This invention requires and replaces puddleflute. As astandard action, the automaton can create a brilliant flashof light, blinding all creatures in a 30foot radius for 1round and dealing 2d6 points of electricity damage to theautomaton. A DC 10 + 1/2 the tinker's level + the tinker'sIntelligence modifier Fortitude save negates the blindeffect.

An automaton with the enhanced puddleflute inventioncannot have the juryrigged puddleflute invention.

Fire and Flames1 BPInvention 5cymbals invention or trumpet invention

Clever modifications to the metal of which some of theautomaton's instruments are made causes the instrumentto scatter sparks when played. The cymbals and trumpetinventions now deal a point of fire damage in addition totheir other effects. This damage is negated if theinstrument's saving throw is made.

Glass Armonica (Instrument)4 BPInvention 5Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

Banned shortly after its creation by influential individualswho were convinced that the device causes insanity, theautomaton has been given a glass armonica to seewhether or not there is any basis to the ban. Long storyshort, there is.

Three times per day as a standard action, the automatoncan run its fingers over the armonica, causing a single, randomly determined creature within 30 feet to becomeconfused. A DC 10 + 1/2 the tinker's class level + thetinker's Intelligence modifier Will save negates. This is amindaffecting ability. Creatures who are immune tomindaffecting abilities cannot randomly be selected.

Greater Instrument Focus3 BPInvention 6instrument focus invention

This invention requires and replaces instrument focus. The automaton gains +2 to its DCs for a specificinstrument when playing that instrument.

This invention can be taken multiple times. Each time, select a different instrument that has the benefit of theinstrument focus invention.

Harmonica (Instrument)3 BPInvention 4Instrumental Inventions class feature

The automaton has been given a harmonica, and, like somany others with harmonicas, uses it to tune that nextnote. As a standard action, the automaton can play theharmonica, granting it a +5 circumstance bonus to thenext Perform check it makes. This check must be madewithin 1 round.

Heavy Cymbals2 BPInvention 4cymbals invention

The automaton's cymbals are bigger, heavier, andgenerally carry further. The cymbals invention now has a10foot radius.

Instrument Focus2 BPInvention 4Instrumental Inventions class feature, any instrument

invention

Additional subroutines regarding one instrumentinvention already installed on the automaton grant thatautomaton +1 to DCs when playing that instrument.

This invention can be taken multiple times. Each time, select a different instrument.

Juryrigged Puddleflute2 BPInvention 5puddleflute invention, static shield invention

The automaton no longer deals electricity damage to itselfwhen it uses the puddleflute invention. Instead, wheneverthe automaton uses the puddleflute invention, damagedealt by the static shield invention is maximized for 1round. By extension, the static sheathe and staticeruption inventions are also maximized for this period, astheir damage is based off of the damage of the staticshield invention.

An automaton with the juryrigged puddleflute inventioncannot have the enhanced puddleflute invention.

Massive Cymbals2 BPInvention 6resounding cymbals

This invention requires and replaces resounding cymbals. The automaton's cymbals invention deals an additional3d4 sonic damage.

Oneman Band5 BPInvention 6any three instrument inventions

The automaton has received a great deal of traininginvolving such feats of dexterity as simultaneouslybanging on drums while blaring on a trumpet. As such, the automaton has gained the ability to use up to threeinstruments as a single fullround action. Given theautomaton's desire to see and be seen while doing this, the automaton refuses to use this invention unless it is theone and only nonalpha automaton currently deployed itsmaster.

Performance Programming1 BPInvention 2Instrumental Inventions class feature

The automaton now has rhythm and gains ranks equal toits hit dice to a single Perform skill. These ranks stackwith the skill suite invention, though the number of ranksan automaton has in a skill cannot exceed the level of itstinker.

This invention can be taken multiple times. Each time, adifferent Perform skill is chosen.

Piccolo (Instrument)2 BPInvention 4Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

The automaton has been given a piccolo. When directedto play along with its master, the automaton adds +2 tothe DC of the master's fascinate bardic performance. Onlyone piccolo can provide benefit at any one time.

Puddleflute (Instrument)2 BPInvention 2Instrumental Inventions class feature

A wild misnomer, the puddleflute, one of many inventionsproduced by the subterranean race of intelligent oozesknown as the Puddlings, is actually a tight skullcap thatemits various warbles and incredibly bright flashinglights. Though meant to be a means of communicationwith the Puddling race, the plan was eventually scrappeddue to the skullcaps frying necessary parts of the wearer'sbrain.

As a standard action, the automaton can create a brilliantflash of light, dazzling all creatures in a 30foot radius for1 round and dealing 1d4 points of electricity damage tothe automaton. A DC 10 + 1/2 the tinker's level + thetinker's Intelligence modifier Fortitude save negates thedazzle effect. Creatures who roll a natural 1 for theirFortitude save are blinded for 1 round instead.

Puttin' on the Ritz3 BPInvention 5dance number invention

The automaton gains the Improved Feint feat.

Resounding Cymbals2 BPInvention 3performance programming, resounding cymbalsinvention

The automaton's cymbals have been retooled for worseacoustics, but greater combat effect. The cymbalsinvention deals an additional 1d6 sonic damage.

Snare Drum (Instrument)3 BPInvention 2Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

The automaton has been given a snare drum. Due to aproblem with the instructions given to the automatonwhen first granted this drum, it has gotten the idea of"snare" all wrong. As a standard action, the automatoncan throw the snare drum as though it were a thrownsplash weapon. If it lands in a square occupied by acreature of size large or smaller, the snare drum somehowfinds a way to entangle that creature for rounds equal tothe automaton's ranks in the Perform (percussion) skill, minimum 1. A creature entangled by a snare drum canforego any number of attacks to attack the drum. Theseattacks automatically hit and each point of damage dealtto the drum reduces the duration of the entangled effectby 1 round. A DC 10 + 1/2 the tinker's level + the tinker'sIntelligence modifier Reflex save negates the entangledeffect altogether.

If a creature entangled by the snare drum is slain, put tosleep, made helpless, or otherwise neutralized before theentangling effect ends, the automaton can retrieve thesnare drum and use it again. Similarly, if the snare drummisses or is successfully saved against, the automaton canretrieve the snare drum and use it again.

Thunderstruck1 BPInvention 3cymbals invention or trumpet invention

Clever modifications to the metal of which some of theautomaton's instruments are made causes the instrumentto scatter sparks when played. The cymbals and trumpetinventions now deal a point of electricity damage inaddition to their other effects. This damage is negated ifthe instrument's saving throw is made.

castanets

Timpani (Instrument)3 BPInvention 4Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

Noting the potent effect that the booming sound of thetimpani has on organic creatures, the tinker has outfit anautomaton with one. Once per day as a standard action, the automaton can beat on the timpani, causing all allieswithin 30 feet to receive the benefits of the haste spell for1 round. This is a mindaffecting ability.

Tiny Clickers (Instrument)2 BPInvention 3dance number invention

The automaton has been given a pair of castanets;however, the automaton simply refuses to refer to them assuch. They are the clickers. The tiny clickers. Wheneverthe master uses the Perform skill to make money, anautomaton with the tiny clickers automatically makes anAid Other roll. If successful, the automaton adds +5 to thePerform check.

Trumpet (Instrument)3 BPInvention 3Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

The automaton has been given a rather battered trumpetthat is only capable of producing a nasty, rather tinnysound. Once per day as a standard action, the automatoncan blare on the trumpet, dazing creatures in a 15footcone for 1 round. A DC 10 + 1/2 the tinker's level + thetinker's Intelligence modifier Fortitude save negates.Creatures who cannot hear, whether this is part of theiranatomy or due to the deafened condition, are immune tothis invention.

Tuba (Instrument)2 BPInvention 2Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

The automaton has been given a rather large andunwieldy tuba. Despite the best programming andinstruction, the automaton has no idea how to play it andassumes that it is to be used as a bludgeon. Theautomaton deals slam damage as though it were one sizecategory larger than it actually is.

War Drums3 BPInvention 5Instrumental Inventions class feature, arms invention

The automaton has been given a pair of rather severelooking wardrums. As a standard action, the automatoncan beat on these drums, granting all allies within 30 feeta +1 competence bonus to damage for 1 round.
