APRIL 2020

Disruption. Fear. Unknowns. Hunkering down. These are emotions and realities in the era of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that has swept the planet in the last few months. It seems like all we knew, the way the world worked, our routines and schedules were all turned upside down. Many are glued to news sources: some with worry about what would come next, others with hope for something positive. Hope. It seems like something we’ve all needed in greater quantities these past few weeks as the world around us has spun out of our control. But we aren’t the first to cling to hope when the world seems to have caved in around us and we struggle at times to keep our footing. The early disciples, and all those who journeyed with Jesus, had their lives disrupted, they hid in fear, they worried about the unknowns, and they hunkered down when they witnessed the Lord arrested, tried, condemned, crucified, and buried. For them, the events of Holy Week were like shifting sand and they struggled to keep their footing. It is in to the darkness of the world that Mary Magda-lene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And sud-denly there was a great earthquake and an angel of the Lord came and sat on the stone that had been over the entrance to the tomb. The guards ran in fear, but the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid.” (Matthew 28:5)

Do not be afraid. There is nothing to fear. Not only that, the angel continues, “I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said.” (Matthew 28:6) We don’t need to be afraid, we can have hope. Not simply because it seems like a good idea, but because the promise of the resurrection, the promise of life everlasting, the promise of Christ with us has already been fulfilled. He is Risen! Hope Begins Here. We have hope in the God of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” (Matthew 28:10). I do not know if we get to worship in-person together on April 12th, but I do know that one day you and I will be together again in the sanctuary for worship and we will celebrate the Resurrected Christ. Until then, know that the He is Risen! Hope Begins Here. Peace, Pastor Leland

Little Lambs Preschool

Spring is officially here! We can’t

wait to get outside and enjoy

some nice weather. We spent the

beginning of March in the

classroom learning about

dinosaurs. The kids loved playing

with our dinosaur bones in the

sand box. We have begun talking

about talking about the story of

Easter.

Maggie Bruns, Director/Teacher

Receipts Thank you to everyone who brings in Kessler’s

& Ken’s receipts. Every one you bring in helps

us to get money back for the preschool for

supplies and learning items, like paint,

construction paper, and much more! We

greatly appreciate it!!

How can you help if you are not already? Bring

in receipts from Kessler’s or Ken’s. Locate the

containers for these items on the table in the

Fellowship Hall and drop them in. That’s it! We

are so thankful to have Virginia Doerr help us

count the receipts, and also turn them in.

Summer Camp & Fundraisers

Church school students enjoyed learning more about summer camp when Lakyn Muilenburg, NeSoDak Assistant Director, and Katie LaMee, Joy Ranch Program Coordinator visited in February. Lakyn and Katie told the students about the four different camps that Lutherans Outdoors has in South Dakota. They also played camp games and sang camp songs with the students.

Anyone that registers for a camp before April 15th will receive a discount! Visit www.losd.org for more information on the camps that are offered. Good Shepherd youth that attend a summer camp are also eligible to receive a campership. The first time a student attends camp they will receive a $100 campership. Each following year students will receive $50 towards the cost of camp.

Families can also earn money in their family accounts to help with the cost of camp, mission trips or the National Youth Gathering. Family account funds are earned when your family helps at fundraisers. In April youth & their families can help sell Kiwanis cards as a way to earn money for their family account. Assisting with rummage sale collection in May and the rummage sale in June are other opportunities to earn money for your family account. In order to receive a campership or to use money from your family account, please notify Amanda Black by email at [email protected] before May 1st. Please include the camp, dates and amount of money you’d like to use from your family account. We hope all of our students attending camp this summer have memorable time!

First Communion Milestone

First Communion & Seder Supper Ceremony has been postponed until a later date.

Kiwanis Card Fundraiser

Kiwanis cards will be available for purchase in April & May. The cards are $10 and include numerous discounts to local businesses. The discounts on the cards are good through April 15, 2021. Cards may be purchased from youth members of the congregation earning money towards summer camp, mission trips and the National Youth Gathering. Youth are encouraged to pick up cards to sell from Amanda Black. This is a great way to start earning money for next year’s National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis, MN!

WELCA Northern Plains Spring Gathering that was scheduled for Saturday, April 18,

2020 has been cancelled.

A reminder that our Bazaar, “Shepherd’s Market,” will be on the first Saturday of this coming November. The purpose is to raise money for the church ministry of our general fund, and for the kitchen remodel at New Beginnings. To that end, we (29 ladies of the church) have been meeting each month to make crafts. There are also many more individuals making things at home or with their church groups.

Therefore, we want to inform you that there will be a Raffle at the Bazaar for a few of the higher value items made by our generous church members. There will be a quilt by our Quilters, a handmade wooden bowl and, perhaps, one or two more donated items.

We have applied for a permit from the City of Aberdeen for the Raffle. You may see the Raffle/Lottery notice in the newspaper that is required to comply with the regulations of the City of Aberdeen and state law. A permit for a Raffle/Lottery is the same permit and uses the same language in the notice for either of these.

Our LADIES’ TEA is postponed for now.

Please watch the announcements for further information.
