You should absolutely own a bike of your own, and using it regularlyis important for exercise and for having fun with your friends. Once

you have been riding for a while, and have got used to your bike, youcan start trying out small jumps in the park or off the side of curbswhen there are no cars around, this will give you a feel for gettingsmall air to build up your condence for your rst jump. When youfeel comfortable to take your skills to the next level, a great thing todo with your friends is to go to Sutton park or a local wooded areaand start making ramps. For this you must start early in the day, and

all take a spade and some food along with you, the ramps you buildmust be rmly packed down, and the landing area must be cleared.Once the ramps are created and you have all managed to jump them,

you can set yourself a real challenge and make the ramps and your jumps larger and larger as the day goes on.

Swings can be created in many ways, the best way to start is bymaking one anchored to a tree and connected to a tyre by a thickrope. It s important to make sure the branch that it is connectedto is thick and not a dead part of the tree, a way of checking thisis that green leaves are coming off the twigs, a friend, parent orguardian can help you get the rope in the tree and secure ittightly. Test your weight a few times before swinging to makesure it will take your weight. Once you have mastered making atyre rope, you can try-out making them throughout the summerwherever you go. if you go on holiday abroad you could make

one leading into the sea or into a river or lake, If you do thisalways make sure the water is deep enough to swing into andthat there are no rocks in the area. Remember, the best way tohave fun is by not going over the top, you don t want to be

spending hours in A&E so know your limits.

When the sun is out this summer, going outside with amagnifying glass will always be eventful, the suns powerwill easily burn items but the best thing to do is burn paperin the middle of a garden away from a house or trees. Theidea is to hold the magnifying glass in front of the sun andmake the white light a circle and as small as possible, thesmaller the white circle is the faster things will burn andthe higher the temperature. Make sure your parents areaware of you doing this, and if they allow you to make aame, get segments of dry wood and put it on the paper, itwill take a few minutes to get a ame. Make sure you donot let the ame get out of hand as re is very unpredict-able. Other things like old toys can be used, and just beproud that you made re without the use of matches or a

    lighter.

Unless we are unlucky this summer, there should be some sunny

days where the weather is perfect and staying indoors in not anoption, the best way to cool down is by having water ghts withfriends outside, you can go to the park, in gardens or any openarea. If you want to play by some rules then you could score on thebasis of wetness, the last person standing would be the one who isthe driest after a period of time, or your friends could be knockedout of the round once there clothes are soaked through. Anotherrule could be one hit kills, where once you are hit, you are out of that round. If rules aren t your thing, I would advise you just playfree for all which is the most popular because its probably the mostamusing, every opponent must defend for themselves and there isno limit on rells, make sure no one chooses to make physical con-tact which could spoil the game, just go crazy until you all run out

of ammo then start again when ready.

Climbing trees is one of the most popular activities that you must have done at least once in your life. Trees comein all shapes and sizes so the possibilities are endless for

you and your friends this summer. The important thing isto plan the route up the tree straight away, take your timewith the climbing, make sure each branch is sturdy and willhold your weight, don t worry about your clothes gettingdirty, ripped or if you come across a bug or two, that s whatgrowing up is all about. Once you have climbed the tree, stay up there for a while and enjoy the view. Know yourlimit on how high to go and always remember that comingback down is the hardest part, try not to climb if theweather is bad as the branches could become slippery and

    unpredictable.

On summer evenings, after a long and exhausting day, you could ask your parents to help you make a bonre. Fire is a dangerous thing, but when you re growing up it is important to experience it and itspower rst hand. To make a re, you rst of all must dig a re pit, make sure that it s not near any trees or near a house, then anarrangement of dry twigs and logs must be stacked up but with agap leaving a centre. Many objects can be burnt, but it is best tostick to using twigs, newspaper and wood. Once the wood is stacked, the re can be started using matches or a lighter, it may take a whileto get going, so patience is needed. Once the re has been burning

for a while you will need to keep adding wood to keep it going.

Don t leave the re unattended or put any canisters on it, and when you want to put it out, chuck water on it to get rid of the heat and

make sure it dies out completely.
