Big Weekend at Saratoga MARQUETRY’S Squirtle Squirt dominates the GI King’s Bishop on Saturday. LANGFUHR’S Imperial Gesture breaks maiden by 10 3/4 lengths on Friday. VINERYLLC KENTUCKY 859.455.9388 vinery.net POINT GIVEN LEAVES NO DOUBT IN TRAVERS When Point Given (Thunder Gulch) struggled to win the GI Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Aug. 5, there was plenty of doubt as to whether the big colt would make another trip across the country to contest today’s GI Travers S. at Saratoga. In a word, the skeptics were wrong. Point Given delivered a strong message in front of a record Spa crowd of 60,486 with a sharp 3 1/2- length victory over second choice E Dubai (Mr. Prospec- tor) in the Midsummer Derby and placed himself at the forefront of the battle for Horse of the Year. “I’ve al- ways read and heard about the Travers,” said winning trainer Bob Baffert, who nailed the big prize with his first Travers starter. “It’s such a great race. Especially to come off the Triple Crown road, it shows you how tough and durable this horse is. He just keeps amazing me. I’ve never seen anything like him.” Lured to the Jersey shore with a $500,000 addition to the $1 million purse, the Preakness and Belmont winner’s training for that race had been interrupted by a foot abscess. Run- ning in a bar shoe at what Bob Baffert then estimated to be 80-percent fitness, the big chestnut showed determination to get up late for the win. A battle of words between trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Gary Stevens overshadowed the gutsy victory, but after a couple of days all was right between trainer and jockey. More importantly, all was right with Point Given. He was sent back to Del Mar to avoid the opressive heat and humidity at Saratoga and turned in two sharp workouts, including five furlongs in :59 1/5 Aug. 20. Still wearing the bar shoe, Point Given broke a half-step slow and race wide in fifth around the far turn as Free of Love (Meadow Flight) and E Dubai cut out the run- ning. Steadily advancing toward the leaders on the out- side, he was on E Dubai’s flank coming out of the turn. Stevens set him down for the drive at the top of the stretch and he passed the leader with ease and drew off to an effortless victory, receiving no challenge from the late runners. “I didn’t want to go to the front entering the stretch, because I know my horse has a tendency to fool around a little bit when he gets in front,” said Stevens. “Once I made the lead, he was a little late in switching leads. I kind of had to throw him over to the right lead, and once he did the acceleration was there and he opened up a nice lead.” Travers cont. page 2 JOHANNESBURG TOP CHOICE IN MORNY While Galileo (Ire) and Mozart (Ire) have established themselves the clear leaders of their divisons, another Ballydoyle colt will try to stamp his authority on the juvenile ranks with a win in today’s G1 Prix MornyCasinos Barriere at Deauville. The latest Ballydoyle star is Johannesburg (Hennessy), who has grown in stature with each success this year. From a lowly Fairyhouse maiden May 30 to the G3 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot June 21, on to the G3 Anglesey S. at The Curragh July 14 through to the G1 Phoenix S. at Leopardstown Aug. 12, he has taken on an aura of invincibility. Such was the hysteria that surrounded his last performance that bookmakers were not keen to lay him for next year’s G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, cutting him to 6-1 as the clear favourite. Trainer Aidan O’Brien said after the colt’s last start, “There is no doubt that this is a brilliant two-year-old. He has two extra gears and acceleration that is electric. He’s a very serious horse and has never been extended.” This is likely to prove by far his toughest test, with opponents of real merit lining up alongside. David Loder’s Meshaheer (Nureyev), a half-brother to O’Brien’s Group 1 winner King Charlemagne, was impressive winning the G3 July S. at Newmarket July 11 last time. He was denied a true run in the G3 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot June 19, yet still finished within two necks of Landseer (GB) and Firebreak (GB) (Charnwood Forest {Ire}). Jerry Bailey, jockey of runner-up E Dubai, had noexcuses for his horse and only praise for the winner.“My horse ran a huge race today,” said Bailey, whowon four on the card. “We gave [Point Given] a goodbattle today, but he is an awesome horse and proved tobe the best.” The only blemish on Point Given’s recordin seven starts this year is his fifth-place finish as thefavorite in the Kentucky Derby. “I’ve learned never tolook back,” philosophized Baffert. “Look forward andenjoy the horse. I have to thank the Prince [Ahmed binSalman] for letting me run this horse so much. Wereally enjoy watching this horse run. The fans enjoy it.Everywhere we go, he picks up a following. When theybrought Cigar to Del Mar, I said, ‘If I ever have a horselike this I want to share him.’ There are few ownersthat would let me do that.” Prince Ahmed bin Salmanwas on hand to enjoy the victory, which he dedicatedto his late brother Prince Fahd Salman, who died of aheart attack last month. “I’m extremely grateful andthis comes at a perfect time,” said Salman. “Unfortu-nately, I lost my best friend, my brother, last month. Iwanted to win this race to dedicate it to him. I’m surehe’s watching us from heaven now and he’ll bepleased. This is the best race I have ever won in mylife.” Point Given, whose sire Thunder Gulch won thisrace in 1995, became the first horse to win thePreakness, Belmont and Travers since Damascus in1967.

Both wins werebittersweet, however, as both horses had been soldprior to their races and will now leave the Kimmelbarn. Dr. Kashnikow, sold two weeks ago to EugeneDixon, was a turf horse from the beginning and, afterfinishing second over the Saratoga lawn in his debut inAugust of last year, he reeled off four straight winsover the surface. No Excuse Needed grabbed the glory here for hissecond stakes success at this track, earning himself aplace in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot Sept.29. Successful in the G3 Vintage S. here last August,he found the heavy ground against him when fifth inthe G2 Royal Lodge S. at Ascot last September. Hesuffered a setback when being prepared for the UAEDerby at Nad al Sheba in March and connections tooktheir time with him to get him right for a Europeancampaign. Unlucky when fifth in the G1 St James’Palace S. at Royal Ascot June 19 behind BlackMinnaloushe, he went on to finish a fine two-lengthsecond to Noverre in the G1 Sussex S. here Aug. 1.Held up in fourth place early by Kieren Fallon through-out the early stages as Nicobar (GB) (Indian Ridge{Ire}) was sent into a clear advantage by Kevin Darley. The pacesetter set a fast pace and, for a while, itlooked as though No Excuse Needed was struggling on the climb uphill as he was being visibly pushed byFallon to keep tabs. Nicobar started coming back tothe field as they turned into the straigth and it was Tamburlaine who swept into the lead at the quartermile marker. Fallon worked to get No Excuse Neededon terms with Tamburlaine and he grabbed the leadwith a furlong remaining. From there, the result wasnot in doubt as he forged ahead to win decisively. JoeMercer, racing manager to the winning owner, SheikhMaktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum, told PA Sport: “He’sa very relaxed horse and Kieren Fallon got him switchedoff, possibly too switched off.
