Chemistry

Scientific Notation• Used as shorthand• Units very essential• Measurements w/ units

Example 5.53 x 10 -4

.000553 Solution: .000553

Scientific Notation & Units

• Simplified form to write• Units help describe measurements• All about accuracy!

Step-by-step how to do Scientific Notation

• 1. write number in standard notation• 2. add decimal point after the last digit• 3. move decimal point to the left until

you only have on digit in front of it.• 4. cross out the zeros at the end• 5. Re-write the number as decimal x

10^x (x = # of times you moved the decimal to the left)

Scientific Notation

Unitssandbag

Units• Tells the scale of measurements• Common Scientific Units e.g. English lbs. oz. ft. in. Metric g. kg. cm.

ExampleQuestion: What kind of units does

the English system use?Solution: The English system use

units such as pounds, ounces, cups, inches, and miles

Measurements• Lengths - SI unit of length is meter.• Volume - amount of 3-dimensional space

occupied by a substance.• Mass - quantity of matter present in an object.

ExampleQuestion: Why would a person

choose a smaller units to measure an object, rather than larger units?

Solution: By choosing smaller units to measure and objects, you are much more accurate with your results. Therefore, you have less errors.

Length

Length• Can be measured in SI, English, or

Metric units.

Volume• SI unit is m3

• Volume measure how much something can hold.

Mass• Metric unit is gram• SI fundamental unit is kilogram

Problem Solving • Help solve equations• Convert units• Be systematic

Example Anna, Zach, and Steven made 60

brownies together. Anna made 18 and put sprinkles

on 1/6 of them. Zach made twice as many brownies as Anna and put sprinkles on ¼ of them. Steven made 1/3 as many brownies as Anna and put sprinkles on all of them. How many brownies had sprinkles?

SolutionAnna – 3 brownies with sprinklesZach – 9 brownies with sprinklesSteven – 6 brownies with sprinkles

18 brownies had sprinkles

Problem Solving• Ask questions suck as:- Where?- What do we know?- How do we get there?- Does it make sense?

Conversion Factor• Def: ration of 2 parts of equation

that shows relationship• Unit x conversion factor = unit2

Conversion Factor• How to• Find equivalence statement

that relates 2 units• Choose conversion factor• Multiply original quantity by

conversion factor• Make sure you have correct

# of significant figures

• Ex: how do you convert from unit to another?

• Solution:

QuizQuestions: 1. Solve & write in scientific notation.5,000,000 x 40002. For what use would you apply units in daily life?3. What units are most appropriate to measure long distances, such as

city distances?4.Vicky decided to hike a 12 mile trail through the Hills. She began her

hike at 9:20 in the morning. After Vicky traveled 1/3 of the distance she looked at her clock and it was 10:05 AM. If she continues to walk at that pace, what time will she finish?

5. Convert into inchesA box is 62 cm. 1 in. = 2.54 cm

QuizAnswers: 1. 20,000,000,000 2.0 x 1010

2. You would use units in daily life to cook up a recipe, fill up gas, pay the bills, and chemistry homework.

3. Miles 4. 11:35 5. 24 inches
