In February 2019 I went to my first PEDC meeting at Woody’s, where I met Bob Canfield and John Quelch. After talking with them about my GT6, within two weeks they came out to my garage with a small group of their Garage Squad gang to “check out” the car. They checked it over and were actually able to get it to start for a brief period. Two days later I had a heart attack. Little did I know that hearing the car actually run was going to do that to me, or maybe it was the detailed parts list John had sent me!

23 March 2019 The Garage Squad was hard at work starting the GT6’s journey to getting it back on the road. Bob Canfield, John Quelch, Paul Johnson, Mark Wintjen, Craig Coutros, Chris Rorke, Scott Freund, and Wayne Simpson were all working their magic. By the end of the afternoon Mark had the paint shining again. Wayne removed the

Wintjen, and Scott Freund were hard at work. The team removed the seats, tunnel, and carpet. The clutch slave was also removed. The door cards were removed and the mechanisms lubricated. Bob Moser cut off the outside mirror and the wiper wheelhouses. The firewall/bulkhead and rear-brake backing plates were cleaned, sanded, masked, and painted. The front shock/springs were removed, and Bob Canfield took them home for disassembly. On Sunday Bob Canfield, John Quelch, Chris Rorke, Mark Wintjen, Art Becker, and Woody Smith were hard at work again. Mark Wintjen restored the wheel-center embellishers, making them look like new again. Art and Woody removed the windshield. Mark cleaned up the glass, and it was then awaiting new rubber. John and Bob Canfield discovered that the timing-chain cover seal was leaking and a fan blade was

carbs and took them with him to rebuild. The guys also removed the gas tank, and Paul took it with him to be restored. The calipers, disks, and hubs were removed from the front, during which process Bob and John discovered the upper ball joints and trunnions needed to be replaced. Then the rear brake drums, shoes, retainers, and wheel cylinders were all removed, and the guys discovered that a number of the steel brake lines were in poor condition. They drained the oil and antifreeze as well as removed all of the heater hoses and the thermostat. The tie-rod ends and gaiters also were removed, as were the brake and clutch master cylinders, the PDWS, and the pedal box assemblies. The team did an amazing amount of work this day, and John left me with the infamous long parts list.

30-31 March 2019 During this weekend the guys returned to continue the journey. On Saturday Bob Canfield, John Quelch, Bob Moser, Paul Johnson, Craig Coutros, Mark

missing. They removed the radiator, fan, harmonic balancer, and timing cover. Bob Canfield removed the rest of the front suspension, including the sway bar, which needed new bushes and downlinks, and the rack, which needed new rubber mounts. Extensive cleaning on the engine and frame was completed. Bob Canfield was able to remove the distributor with lots of determination and muscle-power. It was an amazing weekend. So much was accomplished by these guys.

6-7 April 2019 This was another Garage Squad doubleheader. On Saturday Bob Canfield, John Quelch, Scott Freund, Mark Wintjen, Chris Rorke, Paul Johnson, and Joe Lippi came out. The intake and exhaust manifolds and the exhaust system were removed. Mark Wintjen and Joe Lippi painted the headliner and got it to look new again. The engine was painted as well as the bulkhead and the left-side front frame. Chris cut and drilled the exhaust manifold/down-pipe studs. On Sunday

Bob Canfield, John Quelch, Paul Johnson, Chris Rorke, Mark Wintjen, and Ken Kyle came out to the garage. Bob and Paul got the back brakes done, and Bob got the rear shocks changed. The painting in the engine compartment was done, the plugs were put in, and the fuel pump was installed. The rear window trim was also installed.

14 April 2019 Bob Canfield, Chris Rorke, Craig Coutros, Ken Saviet, and Scott Freund worked on forming/installing new brake lines, instal-ling the steering rack, assembling and installing the front-end bits, installing the transmission mount, and finishing up the clear-coat work on the engine bay. Craig and Scott made some incredible bends in the brake lines to match the old ones. Chris cleaned and painted the anti-sway bar and installed the new bushings. Ken and Bob worked on getting the rack back in place and assembling the front-end pieces. This was the only time John was not here, and he was missed. (I’m sure he was suffering from withdrawal this day.)

The book, above, I bought and had John Nikas sign the night of the Best of Britain preview.

Bentley 4½ Liter “Blower” and a 1955 Jaguar D-Type “Long Nose,” both of which would be present for the preview night only. To prepare for this once- in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these two rare and exquisite cars from a private collection, I reached for my copy of Speed, Style, and Beauty: Cars from the Ralph Lauren Collection, which features the incredible photography of Michael Furman (probably the best automobile photographer who ever lived) and commentary by several renowned classic car experts.

At the preview we enjoyed a 45-min lecture and slide show given by British sports-car historian John Nikas. It was

fascinating to listen to someone who knows way more about British cars than I do, but the best part of the evening came

at the end of the presen-tation when John offered to sign copies of his book,

Meeting the World’s

Greatest Car Photographer

An important aspect of the car hobby, for me at least, is the books. Sure you can find tons of info on the internet about any automotive topic you like, and I often do my research that way, but there’s nothing like holding a book in your hands. Especially when that book has great photos. Recently Art Becker, Pete Dow, and I traveled to the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philly on a cold winter’s night to catch the preview of this year’s Best of Britain show. The theme was British Racing at Le Mans, and the special preview night featured two cars from the Ralph Lauren collection, a 1929

signed by the author). In response, he talked about how much he enjoyed doing those two books before passing me on to John Nikas to get John’s autograph on my book. Both John and Michael are super-nice car guys, and it was a real pleasure to talk to them. As much as I enjoyed seeing the Bentley and the Jaguar and listening to John’s lecture, getting that book (which I’ve wanted since it came out in 2017) and having it signed by the author and the photo-grapher was the real highlight of the evening for me. Weeks later, the book is still out on my desk so I can keep perusing it.

I have well over 200 car-related books in my library, but those three Furman-illustrated books are easily among my favorites. Their combination of superb photography and absorbing text sets them apart from all the rest. ■ On Saturday, 25 January 2020, Pete Dow led his fourth PEDC drive to the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia to see their annual Best of Britain show. Rule Britannia: When British Sports Cars Saved a Nation, which features photos by – you guessed it – Michael Furman. I immediately headed over to the table where a limited number of copies were available and grabbed one before they all disappeared, then waited patiently in line to pay for it and have it signed. Then things got even better for me, because the guy taking the money was none other than Michael Furman himself, who was kind enough to sign the book for me. I told him that, had I known he was going to be there, I would have brought my Ralph Lauren book for him to sign, as well as my copy of Dr. Simeone’s The Spirit of Competition, which Furman also did the photography for (and which had already been

28 April 2019 Bob Canfield, John Quelch, Paul Johnson, Mark Wintjen, Chris Rorke, Russ Sharples, and Wayne Simpson were hard at work again. The front suspension was all reinstalled, inclu-ding the sway bar. Lots of engine bay work was done, including the starter solenoid, new cables, the coil, and the pedestal for the distributor. New manifold studs were installed. Mark Wintjen got the wheels cleaned up and painted them. Paul worked on brake lines. The lower door seals were installed. The rear-hatch seal was installed, and the broken visor bolt was drilled and removed. Wayne dropped off the rebuilt carbs. The radiator was done.

5 May 2019 John Quelch, Paul Johnson, Chris Rorke, Mark Wintjen, Russ Sharples, Joe Lippi, and Ken Saviet came out to work on the GT6. Paul got the refur-bished gas tank reinstalled, along with the filler neck, various lines, and the new sender. The starter, timing-chain cover, harmonic balancer, fan assembly, alternator, refurbished radiator, water-pump housing, and water pump were all re-installed in the car. Russ disassem-bled the dashboard. Chris removed the driveshaft and rear extension from the transmission.

11 May 2019 John Quelch, Bob Canfield, Paul Johnson, Chris Rorke, Mark Wintjen, and Craig Coutros were out to work on the car. The guys got the front hubs rebuilt with new bearings, seals and discs. They installed the outside mirror and the gulp valve. Craig formed the new brake lines and got them test-fitted. The radiator was installed with all new hoses. Paul Johnson used the Surface Conditioning Tool to clean up the underside of the floor pans and frame, and then he pre-cleaned it all and painted it with rust reformer.

19 May 2019

John Quelch, Bob Canfield, Ken Kyle,

Craig Coutros, Scott Freund, Chris Rourke, Paul Johnson, Russ Sharples, and Wayne Simpson came out to the garage and completed a ton of work again. The crew installed the rear trans- mission seal and installed a new differential pinion seal. They replaced the driveshaft and installed the manifolds that I had sent out to Jet Hot. The carbs and linkages were installed, and the team almost completely finished up the front hubs/brakes/brake lines. A new brake

A clean-up of the instruments was done, and the remaining water hoses and radiator-overflow bottle were installed.

15 June 2019 This date was a milestone for the GT6. The engine was started . . . music to my ears! John Quelch, Bob Canfield, Scott Freund, Craig Coutros, Russ Sharples, Chris Rorke, and Tom Vash were all there. Craig and Scott were able to wrap up the fuel and brake lines to the rear of the car. The distributor was installed, the fuel lines in the front were finished, and the fuel filter was installed. The new front flex-brake lines were installed. Russ worked on electrical issues and prepared to re-install the dash. Work was done on installing the new stainless-steel exhaust, which required modifying virtually every part to make them fit from the head pipe back. Fuel, oil, and anti-freeze were all installed, and the valves were adjusted. New springs were installed on the rear hand-brake cables. I picked up my rejuvenated seats, which I had sent to Ace Auto Top. I supplied the new foams, and they fabricated covers and re-assembled the seats.

23 June 2019

John Quelch, Bob Canfield, Chris Rorke, Scott Freund, Jack Kelly, and Ken Kyle were out to work on the GT6. Installation of the stainless-steel sport exhaust system was finished. The guys did some follow-up painting and rustproofing on the underside of the body and in the passenger-side foot well. They reinstalled the speaker and brackets and began installation of the left-side engine-compartment valance. They got the new dash cap installed, as well as the defrost vents.

30 June 2019

John Quelch, Bob Canfield, Scott

Freund, Mark Wintjen, Chris Rorke, and Art Becker were out to the garage. The windshield was re-installed after a lot of wrestling by the guys. They prepped the tunnel for installation, and Mark and Scott began installing new carpeting in the rear area. Mark pulled the grille to do some rehab and cleaned up the brightwork and lenses.

7 July 2019

John Quelch, Bob Canfield, Scott Freund, Russ Sharples, Chris Rorke, Wayne Simpson, Ken Kyle and Mike Browne came out this time. Scott made excellent progress installing the Hushmat, and the guys got the tunnel installed and wrapped up. The gearshift selector was also installed. The rear brakes and the handbrake were adjusted. Russ made good progress on the electricals. Most of the brackets and bits were transferred from the old dash to the new. The horns and grille (refurbished by Mark Wintjen) were re-installed. The rubber cones in the bonnet were replaced and adjusted. Wayne Simpson fine-tuned the carbs.

Johnson, Scott Freund, and Mark Wintjen made a ton more progress on the GT6. They resolved some minor vacuum leaks and discovered that the front carb piston was hanging up, causing the engine to lean out when the throttle was jabbed. They got that resolved and installed the air-cleaner assembly, running the flex tubes to the shroud and drilling holes to accept them. Paul and Scott installed the Hushmat. All the carpet was installed as were the spare wheel and jack. They installed the chrome on the wiper drives and tightened the washer nozzle on the right side. They hooked up the heater-control valve, and Bob Canfield took the battery hold-down home to modify it to fit the battery in the GT6. He also got the passenger-side outer waist seal installed and the door jam cleaned and painted. They got the hood prop rod installed with new nylon bushings.

20-21 July 2019

This was another major milestone weekend. Russ Sharples got the dashboard all straigtened out on Saturday and, along with Bob Canfield and Mark Wintjen, got all the gauges installed. On Sunday my GT6 completed its maiden voyage around the neighborhood – 3.5 miles! It felt great and was turning a lot of heads. The Squaders worked so hard to get to this day, and now my orders were to drive it. The next step was to get the car to Tom Vash for some bodywork before Brits on the Beach 2019 on September 14th. Tom did some amazing bodywork and repaired rust areas. The car looked great upon its return from his garage. The guys were back again to help get the car ready for Brits on the Beach. Saturday, 14 September was a great day. The show was fantastic as usual. I had gone to Brits several times before, but this time I actually was going to show off my car at a show! Thanks to all of the hard work from the Garage Squad I actually won 2nd place in my class, and the car wasn’t even 100% finished yet.

26 October 2019 The guys came back several times in the fall to complete a few more projects. On this date John Quelch, Bob Canfield, Bob Moser, Craig Coutros, Scott Freund, Mark Wintjen, Paul Johnson, Ken Kyle, Chris Rorke, and Russ Sharples attended. They pulled out the seats, carpets, tunnel arch, and tunnel. Then they dis- connected the driveshaft, removed the starter and clutch slave, and sup- ported the engine. After unbolting the rear mounts and the bellhousing bolts, the transmission was wrestled out. They then

removed the cover assembly (pressure plate), clutch plate (drive plate), flywheel and pilot bearing (spigot bushing). The flywheel needed to be re-surfaced, and it went home with Bob Canfield. The next step was to install the new clutch. The guys also trimmed the door seals, installed a new steering wheel and got the horn to work. The new electronic distributor was installed along with the new coil.

Conclusion Before the Squad left on the last visit of the year the car was running smooth and idling about 1000RPM. As John said, “It really looks great, and runs like a champ!” I can’t thank all of the Garage Squad members enough for all the hours of hard work they put into bringing my GT6 back to life. I know I am going to enjoy many hours of driving time in the years to come. ■

Webmaster Martin Vickery is working with President Ken and IT Manager Russ on redesigning the PEDC website. Martin asked how many members present have Twitter accounts; only a few members stated that they do. He urged members to contact him if they’d like to be added to the members-only PEDC Facebook Group page.

Regalia Report

Regalia Manager Sookie McLean had grill badges for members who ordered them. She reminded members to contact her, [email protected], for all regalia orders.

is only 8½ months away. This year’s show is set for Saturday, 26 September. Any show questions, concerns, or suggestions should be sent to Bob at [email protected]. Tom Vash stated that if members would like to be considered for trophies in the three special classes – Modified, Preservation, and Customized – they should indicate this on their Brits on the Beach registration form so the judges know ahead of time to look at those cars.

New Trustees-at-Large Nominees

President Ken noted that the outgoing Board nominated five new Trustees at Large at their November meeting: Mike Browne, Bob Canfield, Steve Mundt, John Quelch, and Mark Wintjen. They will serve for one 2-year term. All nominees were approved by a voice vote of members present at the meeting, as prescribed by the PEDC Bylaws. President Ken thanked outgoing Trustees at Large Mark Berkowsky, Ernie Caponegro, and Charlie Jackson for their service.

Petition for More Board Members

President Ken noted that the Board reviewed at its November 2019 meeting the petition submitted by 12 members in September 2019. The petition was reviewed against the Club Bylaws and was not accepted. See details on page 11 of the January 2020 newsletter.

Late 2019 Events

President Ken recapped three events that occurred at the end of last year. On November 10th he and Carol organized a fall foliage drive to Hunterdon County. Participating were 21 members in 11 cars. Lunch was at the Sergeantsville Inn, followed by a stop at the Beneduce Winery. On November 24th he and Carol organized a movie & dinner night to see “Ford vs Ferrari.” Participating were 24 members for the movie and 21 for dinner afterward. On December 14th Mort Resnicoff & Fredda Fine organized our annual Christmas/holiday party at the Lakewood Country Club. Mort noted that although everyone had a great time, the food could have been better. So he and Fredda did extensive research to find us a new venue: the Jumping Brook Country Club, Neptune, NJ.

PEDC 2019 Awards

President Ken noted that awards were given at the Christmas/holiday party. Bob Canfield was named 2019 Clubman of the Year. Tom & Corinne Vash received a Certificate of Appreciation for hosting two tech sessions and one BBQ and for sponsoring three new trophy classes at Brits on the Beach 2019. Ken noted that Barry & Laura Shandler also got a COA for organizing several rallies over the last seven years. Also receiving a COA were Rodney & Kathy Ford for hosting the goodie-bag stuffing parties for several years. Congratulations to all.

New Business

Ken noted that Webmaster Martin Vickery, Regalia Manager Sookie McLean, Newsletter Editor Carol Kyle, and Sunshine Manager Nadine Berkowsky have agreed to continue in their staff positions. He also noted that Russ Sharples has offered to be our new IT manager.

Vice President and Events Coordinator Woody Smith discussed two events coming up in January: (1) our annual events planning meeting, “The Gathering,” on Saturday, January 18th, at Woody’s, 1-4 PM; and (2) Pete Dow’s drive to the Simeone Museum in Philly, on Saturday, January 25th, to see their annual “Best of Britain” show.

President Ken mentioned that there’s a Cars & Coffee at The Grove in Shrewsbury, NJ every second Saturday of the month (weather permitting), 8:30 – 10:30 AM. It’s a smaller venue than some C&C events, but there are always lots of interesting cars.

Ken also reminded members that membership dues must be received by February 29th and that we have an extra day this year to get our forms in since it’s a leap year. He urged members to renew so that they aren’t removed from the membership roster.

New Projects

Tom Vash talked about the MG TD hot rod he’s working on. He bought it in 2019, and it’s in good condition – no rust, complete, engine runs, idles well. He stated that the car no longer has swoopy TD fenders, as he’s putting Harley Davidson fenders on it.

Lenny Giles talked about his ‘61 MGA that his dad bought in ‘62. It was Lenny’s daily driver in high school. He’s been doing some restoration on it the last 18 months.

John Quelch talked about the Garage Squad project involving Bob “The Pirate” Arzberger’s GT6. John joked that Bob stole this car for $500. For that reason – and because of Bob’s name, “Arrrrrzberger,” Bob has been dubbed The Pirate. John noted that the GS has done a huge amount of work on the car. The Squad has joked that when John handed Bob the list of parts he’d need to restore the car, Bob literally had a heart attack. Yes, Bob ended up in the hospital. (Now the Squad is careful not to give members lists that are too long.) John said the GT6 went to Tom Vash for some sheet metal work and is now awaiting a paint job, scheduled for this spring.

Adjournment

President Ken adjourned the meeting at 8:12 PM and reminded members that the next meeting is February 5th (the first Wednesday of the month, as usual). ■

MG TD – A Car That Deserves Your Love ♥

The MG TD has always been a sort of “middle child” – caught between its two more glamorous siblings, the classically styled TC and the swoopy looking TF. But I’m here to give the TD the love it deserves. The TC is widely credited with starting the post-WWII sports car craze in America, and there is some validity to that. American interest in sports cars was certainly sparked by the TCs brought home by GIs returning from England after the war, and new TCs were imported to the U.S. starting in 1947. However, the public’s fascination with the TC did not translate into big sales numbers, with only about 1900 of them sent over here from 1947 to 1949. This was partly because there was no LHD version of the TC, and also because its archaic mechanicals were taken almost entirely from the pre-war TB. In 1950 MG management sought to remedy the TC’s shortcomings with the new TD. Although it carried over the TC’s engine and transmission, the TD benefited from extensive mechanical upgrades, which included a stiffer frame that went over the rear axle instead of under it, independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering, and better brakes, as well as smaller and wider wheels and tires. These upgrades resulted in dramatic improvements in ride and handling compared to the TC, and the American public responded positively by buying almost 24,000 TDs over four years of production. The TD also came in a LHD version, and the tach and speedo were positioned directly in front of the driver where they’re supposed to be. Its body was wider than the TC’s, resulting in a somewhat chunkier appearance, but it also had a more comfortable interior. The only mistake MG made with it was ditching the TC’s wire wheels in favor of steel ones, but wires were readily available in the aftermarket and many TDs were converted to them.

By 1952 MG knew it would need an all-new car to compete with emerging models from Triumph, Austin-Healey, and others, but British Motor Corporation management flatly refused to put the EX175 prototype into production. MG was forced to soldier on with the TF, a warmed-over version of the TD that sold fewer than 6300 units over two years,

until management finally relented and the MGA was born. So please join me in a group hug for the MG TD on its 70th birthday. It’s a sports car that truly deserves your love. ■

OUR FALL FOLIAGE DRIVE TO Hunterdon County on Sunday, 27 October 2019, was canceled because of rain, but we were able to reschedule the drive to Sunday, 10 November. Even though there wasn’t much fall color that day, we had an enjoyable drive, mostly through backroads, starting at Woody’s and ending at the Sergeantsville Inn, Sergeantsville, NJ, for lunch. The inn is named for the Sergeant family, who lived there in the early 1700s. In the 1830s two wings were added, and the inn became a grain and feed store. It then served as a grocery store, an ice cream parlor, and a pelt trading center before opening as a restaurant in the early 1900s. The restaurant was severely damaged by fire in 2015 and rebuilt. Fortunately the original stone structure remained intact. The original fireplaces are

still working, including the one in the Wyeth Room, shown below, where we had lunch. After a delicious lunch we drove a few miles east to the Beneduce Vineyards and Winery in Pittstown, NJ. Some of us tried the wine tastings, and others bought a bottle of wine to share while sitting in the winery’s beautiful greenhouses. Their reds are Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and an Austrian red named Blaufränkisch. Their main white varieties are Chardonnay, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer.

Bob’s Tech Tip: Greasing LBC

Front Suspensions When we read the original factory maintenance recommendations for lubricating front suspension components on older little British cars (LBCs), we can appreciate the technological advantages of today’s cars. The MGA manual calls for the swivel assembly (kingpin) to be greased every 1000 miles. When the MGB was introduced, that recommended greasing was changed to every 3000 miles – some good progress. The point is that these older cars were built in an era when neither the engineering nor the lubricants were able to offer the extended maintenance cycles of today.

Recently the PEDC Garage Squad has been working on a number of MGAs, and we have replaced plenty of worn-out front suspension parts. We’ve come to appreciate two things: first, you cannot over-lubricate a kingpin, and, second, if you do not grease these high-wear parts every year, you are going to have problems.

I suggest a good lithium complex grease. If you are not sure what type of grease is already in the car’s joints, then the recommended procedure is to pump in new grease until you are sure the old grease is purged.

This can prevent two incompatible greases from ruining the front-end parts. While you are doing this, inspect the bushings and rubber seals on the front end for any signs of cracks or tears.

If your classic LBC does not use kingpins in the front suspension, then it probably has a trunnion-type configuration. This is similar in operation and also requires lots of regular lubrication. Always check the manual since some trunnions require gear oil as a lubricant instead of grease.

Here is a link to a good video about MG kingpins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUBauSNW8rM

A Message from Motorcar Garage Dear PEDC Members,

I wanted to let you know that I am winding my business down this spring in preparation for my retirement.

I want to thank everyone in the club for their support over the years. I’ve tried to provide fair, honest, and affordable service, and I’ve enjoyed keeping many British cars on the road. Now it’s time for me to focus on my fleet and, hopefully, have time to attend more club events in one of them.

Yours truly,

Peter Cosmides
