TRANSCRIPT
We have moved fully into fall and back into our program year as we resume Wednesday night Bible studies and our children and youth get acclimated to their new Sunday school classes. I thank God for all our incredible Sunday school teachers and Bible study leaders, folks who each week spend time digging into God’s word and preparing challenging and uplifting lessons for each of us! I am also thankful for our Church Library volunteers who provide great resources for our teachers as they prepare their lessons! Our Sunday School Office and Discipleship Team have been busy thinking about how to continue to grow and develop our Discipleship Ministries at First Baptist. On Sunday, October 29 from 6-8 pm Tony Brooks from the Baptist General Association of Virginia will be leading a Sunday School Teacher Workshop in the CEB. During the workshop he will present some best practices for teaching and give us some ideas about how to engage classes as we study the Bible together. First Baptist will offer this event for our Shenandoah Baptist Association, but it is my hope that our Sunday school teachers will be the first to sign up and benefit from Tony’s wisdom! Even if you have been teaching for decades, I believe Tony will give you some new ways to think about leading your class. If you
have thought about teaching and have wondered what that ministry might be like for you, why don’t you join us for the workshop and learn with us! Each week we also have time for you to study Scripture outside of Sunday school. On Thursday mornings Bob Stainback leads a morning study in the Lower Auditorium. And if you haven’t joined us for Wednesday night Bible Study, you can always start now! Simply call the church office if you would like to attend our weekly meals at 5:45 PM or join us at 6:30 PM for Bible study. If you are not able to attend, the handouts and outlines will be available the following Sunday in the newsletter rack next to the coatrack in the new narthex. My prayer is that our church would be one that has fallen in love with the Bible. God still speaks to us through the pages of Scripture and our lives continue to be shaped by God’s Word. How will you commit to deepening your knowledge and love for Scripture this year? God Bless You, Pastor Kristin

Kristin’s Youth Scoop
Wednesday Night Youth Group has resumed with our incredible leaders: Courtney and Stephen
McCalley, Sarah Kite, and Dave Smith! This year we will be in our large Together Night group
with our church family to study the Bible once a month. On the other nights we will be
fellowshipping together, serving at Bright Futures once a month, and also finding new ways to
invest in our community, both here at First Baptist and in Winchester and Frederick County. If
you would like for your youth to be involved, please be sure to fill out a medical release and put it
on file for this program year!
We ask that you continue to be in prayer as our search continues for the next Associate Pastor.
This position will be leading our youth ministry as well as creating a robust young adult ministry at
our church. Though we have received resumes, we continue to search for the right fit. Please pray
that our search would be fruitful and that God would connect us with the right pastor!
In the meantime, Pastor Kristin continues to be leading and organizing the youth ministry.
However, the weekly classes and groups are taught by incredible volunteer leaders and teachers. If
you see these folks, make sure to thank them for investing energy, time, and influence into the
lives of our youth:
Stephen and Courtney McCalley
Joel and Lynne Esslinger
Kathryn Mayberry
Sarah Kite
Dave Smith
If you have considered serving in our youth ministry, we would love for you to join this incredible
team! Support and involvement is especially important during this time of transition.
Thank you for your prayers and for your continued support of our fabulous youth!

Hunting Ridge Retreat
It was beautiful seeing so many of your faces at the HRR Pancake Day and the HRR Worship at the Ridge Sunday! Thank you to all who have given money towards the Mattress Campaign- we have raised the money for 16 mattresses so far, around 20% of our goal. Thank you for your gen-erosity and hearts for HRR!
Last weekend we hosted the Joel Hardin Professional Tracking services group. The group this year included guests from Idaho, Wyoming, Massachusetts, Virginia and North Carolina. The lead trainer was from Idaho. During discussions with him, he told us that he has been to training classes and taught training classes at facilities all over the US and one in Japan. He also said that our facility was in the top 2 that he has been to. He stated that our “facilities and hospitality were the best he has seen.” From other conversations throughout the weekend, we believe that oppor-tunities will continue to arise through this relationship. Always exciting to hear such great feed-back from our groups! Check out these pictures from their weekend.
Announcements
The HRR Fall Work Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 14th. We will meet at the pavilion at 8am for donuts and coffee and then head down into the woods for the day. The plan will be to gather and load up the already cut piles of firewood into trucks and haul up to the top to split. Bring your gloves. We will serve you lunch after and look forward to good fellowship during the work.

Lori’s Grace Notes
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy.” Psalm 94:19
Life is so often filled with unexpected problems and crises. Sometimes despair can darken the most faithful Christian heart. We strive to maintain stability and grace in spite of difficulties and stress. We must remember that we are held “near to the heart of God” and can find the comfort and rest we need in Christ. Because of our relationship with Christ we have a joy and peace that
only our Redeemer can give. Let’s try to live every day with an inner calm and courage despite the turmoil that can happen in our lives.
Cleland McAfee (1866-1944) wrote this consoling hymn when his life was filled with sadness. As Minister to First Presbyterian Church in Chicago, he was devastated to hear of the death of his 2
beloved young nieces and wrote this hymn in the midst of deep grief. It soon became widely known and has comforted many in times of despair.
Near To The Heart of God
There is a place of quiet rest, near to the heart of God, a place where sin cannot molest, near to
the heart of God.
There is a place of comfort sweet, near to the heart of God, a place where we our Savior meet, near to the heart of God.
There is a place of full release, near to the heart of God, a place where all is joy and peace, near to
the heart of God.
Chorus: O Jesus, blest Redeemer, sent from the heart of God, hold us who wait before Thee, near to the
heart of God.

“Son” Shine Learning Center is back in full swing. We have had a great start! We have so many really wonderful learning experiences to look forward to throughout our 2017-2018 school year. One of the most special events has been the addition of iPads to our Computer Lab. We are so grateful to Ray Chapman’s family for blessings us as the recipients of this gift. We will honor Ray by learning through technology. Our friend believed in the power of education and he also believed that all children are precious. We will use these iPads to bring a new element of learning to our program.

Dear First Baptist Church Family,
Words cannot express my thanks for your kindness and concerns during my recent surgery and recupera-tion. Your prayers, calls, visits, flowers and beautiful inspirational cards have been a blessing to me.
All the wonderful meals that have been brought have been such a blessing from each one of you. My most heartfelt thanks go out to each of you.
I want to specially thank the ladies of the Philia Class. Their prayers, beautiful cards and words of encour-agement have truly been a blessing, particularly with the passing of my sister, Jessie, just a week after my surgery. I could not have made it through without your loving care and support and constant expressions of encouragement and concern.
My “thank you” seems so small compared to all you have done, but it comes from my heart.
You truly are a loving and caring Church Family.
