What a great boating season so far, with good weather and interesting events driving more boats and crew to participate. Starting out 2016 with two fun Final Fridays and two early sail races, the Cruising season started off with a luncheon at Southern Graces in Beaufort in March. Our usual destination, Dockside in Port Royal, was closed due to a fire. DIYC’s Cruise Captain Bob Hazelrigg chose Southern Graces as an alternative and what an excellent choice. The food was excellent, the service outstanding, and it was a great day to be on the water. Thanks to Bob Welborn, Captain for the Southern Graces Cruise. In April, Cruise Captain Mike Koetters led a flotilla of nine boats and 50 crew to Bass Creek for a luncheon raft–up. A sunny day with a nice breeze made for another great day on the water. Also in April, first–time Cruise Captain Chuck Wibby cruised to The Back Porch in Port Royal with five boats and 30 crew for a nice lunch on another great day. Congratulations to Chuck for an excellent job first time out. Our first social event of the season was a Chickin 4 Ways Barbecue catered by Jimmy Fitts. What a great meal. Thanks to Social Chairs Valerie Hatcher and Ann MacFarland for a little different approach to a great time. Did I mention the weather was great? In June, Co–Cruise Captains Andy Jacobs and John Huntley led our signature Charleston Cruise and Sail Race, and it was fantastic. Hats off to both Captains. Just recently, we held our 8th Annual Boat Hop and 4th of July picnic. Seven boats were displayed and, as has happened on several occasions, weather played a role. This time about 45 minutes after the start we were treated with thunder, lightning, some rain, and a most beautiful rainbow. We closed the boats and encouraged those with dinner reservations to move to the Gazebo, where they were treated to a good old traditional 4th of July picnic. Because the Marina area was spared any serious rain, a number of people wandered around the docks and others returned after the meal to enjoy the rest of the evening. Thanks to Bob Hazelrigg who organized the dock event and to Ann MacFarland and Val Hatcher and their team for the picnic. Most notable in the sailing season so far was Mark Schuster’s first place win in the St. Elena race in Beaufort. In April, Captain John Mahoney taught a Basic Sailing Course for Dataw residents who wanted to learn about sailing. Six people successfully navigated the course that included both classroom and on the water training. Our thanks to John. A highlight of our season just occurred when the Yacht Club sponsored a program for Camp Dataw. Co–chairs Betty Huntley and Alice Chesser organized the event for the campers that included a Cannonball Sea Battle (similar to Cornhole), a Sea Craft project making sailboats, and Boat Tours of a sailboat and a power boat. Great job by Betty and Alice and their volunteers, John Huntley, Wayne and Beth Vance, Bob Hazelrigg, Al and Chris Dedel, Valerie Hatcher, Ann MacFarland, Sandy Hatcher, Bo Payne, Kitty Trice and others. And most of all, thanks to the kids who were great. They were interested, seemed to enjoy the events and were very well behaved. The Tides of Datha Summer 2 0 1 62Vice Commodore’s report . . . johN huNTleYIt is hard to believe we are halfway through the term for this Bridge! It has gone by too quickly, due in no small part to the many DIYC activities and events that have already taken place. “Time passes quickly when you’re having fun!” The Vice Commodore has been responsible for organizing several of these events.Light Up the Night: Shortly after the Commodore’s Ball, in December we had our first event, “ Light Up the Night.” We teamed with the Garden Club, which has always excelled in this wonderful holiday event, and the Dataw Marina, which facilitated the event on the docks. DIYC had the majority of its fleet decorated. This created a spectacular scene as the “revelers” came down to the dock on the final leg of the luminary tour. The competition was a Peoples Choice, with voting for best in sail and power. In the sail category the results were:

First: Spindrift, Captains John and Betty Huntley*Second: Second Wind, Captains Gerry and Alice Chesser*Third: True Love, Captains Roy and Carol Crocker *Recused themselves from the prizes but retained “bragging rights”!

In the power category, the results were:First: Princess of Tides, Captains Dave and Mary HanbySecond: Hotty Toddy, Captains Bob and Nancy HazelriggThird: Sundown, Captains Stan and Ellen Hudson

We look forward to this event in December, again teaming with the Garden Club, DHF, and the Marina. Final Friday: To kick off our calendar of events for 2016, we hosted Final Fridays in January and February. The January 29th event was a sellout, and we packed the Community Center. Four homemade chili recipes were served with cornbread and desserts. The chili was prepared and served by DIYC Bridge members – John and Betty Huntley, Herb and Cathy Stackhouse, Bob and Nancy Hazelrigg, and Wayne and Beth Vance. It was a great start to the season and served as an important part of our membership drive. The second Final Friday in February featured Gumbo prepared by Commodore Gerry Chesser and Rear Commodore Wayne Vance. Once again, the evening was a tremendous success and enjoyed by all. Final Fridays continue to be a DIYC tradition to host current members and those interested in membership to kick off the boating season and announce the planned cruises. This is also an opportunity for the Bridge to show appreciation to the hardworking Social Committee by assuming responsibility to prepare and host the events.Charleston Overnight Cruise and Offshore/Inshore Sail Race: This cruise was a highlight of the season with a dozen power boats, four sailboats and a record number of our members participating. We teamed with the Charleston Yacht Club for their First Friday and hosted them for cocktails and appetizers on the dock where our fleet was moored. Accommodations ashore were available for our members at the Hilton Garden Inn with some taking advantage of the Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto events. Dinner Saturday was a member option with most of us getting groups together to enjoy the culinary delights Charleston offers. The sailing “Regatta” took place in Charleston Harbor with Captains Scott and Cheryl Johnson winning in their 54 foot Hylas Lame Libre. It was good to re–energize this cruise, and we will continue to make it an annual event. Safe cruising and good sailing! (See DIYC photos of our year on pages 8–9)

The second half of the boating season will be highlighted by the annual Dataw Cup race, day cruises to Edisto and Bohicket, and the July 30th DIYC Morgan River Sandbar outing with the Fripp Island Yacht Club. If you haven’t participated in this event maybe this would be a good year to start. Fripp Island sends its boat, the Fripper, to the Dataw Marina dock and will deliver you right to the sandbar without getting your feet wet. The Fripper also has a restroom and a place to get out of the sun if necessary. In addition to the above, you will not want to miss the Commodore’s Ball in November! To end, I would like to recognize past Commodore and our current Website Manager, Al Dedel. Al has done an exceptional job maintaining and expanding the Club’s website. You should visit the site and see how much helpful information is available.Remember, boat safely, “the sea always finds out everything you do wrong.”

The Tides of Datha Summer 2 0 1 6 3rear Commodore’s report . . . waYNe VaNCeOne of the great and beautiful environmental treasures in America is South Carolina’s ACE Basin. It is named ACE Basin because it is made up of the basin wetlands of the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers. The Basin covers 350,000 acres of wetlands, 250,000 of which are preserved and protected by a public–private partnership. The Basin includes a wonderful variety of indigenous birds, fish and fauna. It is unique to have an opportunity to visit this area by water, and that is what the DIYC did on its ACE Basin Cruise on June 22. I was Co-Cruise Captain with Jack McGill of the DIYC who guided us on a trip to the upper Combahee. On a beautiful morning, eight boats from the DIYC departed the Dataw Marina and traveled up the Bull River, crossed over to the Combahee, passed under the Harriet Tubman Bridge and went far into the upper Combahee River. The water changed from salt to fresh, the lush, verdant vegetation evolved and the river narrowed and darkened. As we traveled thirty miles or so into the Basin, Jack provided commentary to the boats about the area we were travelling through, and its sights, plantations and history. (See picture to the right of the boats cruising together!)The group anchored and rafted-up for lunch near the “Tea House” landing at Cherokee Plantation. After food and drink, a number of cruisers enjoyed a swim in the cool fresh water. Alligators are plentiful there, but fortunately were engaged somewhere else at that moment. This cruise was an opportunity added in June to the many other cruises scheduled over the season by the DIYC, and it was a special experience.

Cruise News . . . BoB hazelrIGG, Cruise CaptainIt is hard to believe that the year is now past half over but we still have a number of exciting cruise events remaining. The next cruise is the always popular Morgan River Sandbar trip on Saturday, July 30, along with our friends from the Fripp Island Yacht Club. Dan Barton will once again be the Cruise Captain. This is one of the highlights of the year and you don’t need a boat or a boat that can be beached to join in the fun because the Fripper will come to our marina to pick up those members who choose to take the short ride to the “Monkey” Island sandbar. (See page 10 for details of this exciting cruise!)

With the exception of the July 4th Boat Hop, we have been blessed with extraordinary weather. Even the Boat Hop storm turned out to be more bark than bite and many Island residents and their guests came to the docks to visit our boats and enjoy hamburgers. The great weather has not just benefited our individual cruises but also the visits we have hosted from the Fripp and Edisto clubs. We have developed a special friendship with Edisto and we will cruise the beautiful golden marsh waters there in October. In order to better accommodate the Edisto Yacht Club’s visit to Dataw, the Q on Bay cruise to Beaufort has been rescheduled to August 20th. Note that both the Sandbar Cruise and the Q on Bay Cruise with Bill Krebs serving as Cruise Captain will be on Saturdays. A number of our members have suggested more Saturday events and we are anxious to see how that works out.As noted earlier, the weather has been spectacular for our cruises. The first cruise of the year was to Beaufort and we had a delightful luncheon at Southern Graces. The next event was a raft–up in Bass Creek organized by Mike Koetters and that was quite successful in part because of its proximity to Dataw which enabled sailboaters to join. Chuck Wibby headed up the cruise to the Back Porch Grill at the Port Royal Marina. Although rather lightly attended, Back Porch provided a great casual hamburger and hot dog buffet luncheon. Afterwards many of us made a side trip to see El Galeon from the water while it was docked at Port Royal. The next cruise was the overnight trip to Charleston which, regrettably, I had to miss due to a minor mechanical issue with Hotty Toddy which resulted in Nancy and I being “stuck” in St Simons for some extra days. Andy Jacobs and John Huntley organized the trip and according to all who attended it was superb. The Charleston Yacht club was a gracious host and from the comments we have received it is an event to be repeated. The most recent event was a rather impromptu cruise into the ACE Basin. What a wonderful day that turned out to be thanks to Wayne Vance and Jack McGill. See Wayne’s article on this cruise in this issue on page 3. There are still some great times coming up. In addition to those mentioned earlier we plan a trip to Bohicket on September 12th. This is suitable for either a day trip or an overnighter. Your support for our events and cruises is very much appreciated and goes a long way toward making the Dataw Island Yacht Club one of the most active and fun clubs on our Island. A special thanks go to boat owners who have made an extra effort this year to invite our non–boat owner members to our events!

Sailing fleet report . . . roY CroCker, Sailing Captain

The DIYC Sailing Fleet has had an active first half of the year that included monthly races and having a number of

Dataw boats participate in the Santa Elena Regatta. The results from the monthly races are combined to determine the overall Champion of the Dataw Sailing Fleet with trophies presented to the top finishing boats based on the full year of racing. The Santa Elena Regatta, which is sponsored by the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club and supported by DIYC, was held in April in Port Royal Sound and the Beaufort River. This event was a combination of the Jean Ribaut and the Pedro Melendez Cups and was a celebration of the 450th anniversary of the founding of the Colony of Santa Elena by the Spanish on Parris Island.Preparation is underway for the next major local sailing event — the Dataw Cup. This race is scheduled for Saturday, October 29. We usually have 20 to 25 boats participating in this very popular regatta. The race, which is 22 miles long, starts near Brickyard point, goes on the Coosaw River down to St Helena Sound, then proceeds up the Morgan River to finish at the Dataw Marina. There is a full schedule of social activities associated with the Dataw Cup.Many thanks to the members of the Race Committee who faithfully show up to run all our races. Ken Lantelme, Jerry Hubbard, Noel Chrisman and David Hubbard can always be counted on to manage our races —without their participation we would not have our successful DIYC racing program. Long time Dataw resident and DIYC sailor, Art Morrow, has moved away from Dataw and is no longer sailing in the fleet. Art could always be counted on to show up at the Sailing Fleet events and his participation and friendship will be missed.Wishing everybody fair winds and a following sea!
