1. Introduction

• Current Korean society is facing several problems regarding DL as follows:– Creation of an island of digitized information

for culture and heritage documents– Crisis of humanity studies– No initiative government department– No research-oriented DL– Supposition of DL as a digitization of printed

document and electronic libraries

Page 4: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

• Necessity of DL for Korean Culture and Heritage– Preservation of Korean history documents in

digital form– Providing opportunities for Korean peoples to

access the Korean classics regardless of the time and places

– Promotion of the study for humanities through DL technologies

Page 5: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

– Development of the Korean information

industry through DL construction

– Introducing and accessing of the Korean

classics to and around the world

– Sharing cross-cultural heritage

3. Research Agenda

• Text encoding of Korean ancient document: TEI, XML, document structuring techniques

• Digitizing technology: 3D and image capture techniques, digital camera, over sized materials

• 3D animation and rendering technology: Browser development, VRML techniques

Page 10: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

• Integrating technology of geo-spatial data and documents: mapping techniques between old and modern map, automatic linkage methods

• Digital preservation : migration, emulation, refreshing techniques

• Summarization and abstraction : statistics or corpse-based techniques, using structured document

Page 11: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

DL LAB. Sookmyung Univ.

• Cross language information retrieval: bilingual and parallel corpus, dictionaries, and terminology

• Interface design: visualization, cognitive and intelligent interface

• Classification and cataloging: automatic classification(documents, relics, manuscript), metadata(TEI header, Dublin core)

• Restoring technology of damaged and spoiled materials: documents, manuscript, relics

• Content development for various user levels: K-12, researchers and scholars, foreigners, ordinary persons

4. Collaboration

• 5 reasons why we need collaboration for mutual benefits in DL

• The first reason– Our situation for DL construction: beginning

stage in terms of DL technologies– DL for Korean culture and heritage: should be

content and technology based DL– Need experiences, knowledge and technologies

to advance for the future DL

Page 14: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

DL LAB. Sookmyung Univ.

• The second reason– Current DL: networked information

repositories within the specific country– Future DL: networked information repositories

around the world– This means the future DL has to have contents

of the East and West

• The third reason– US is not familiar with Korean language,

culture and heritage– US DL need Korean contents

Page 15: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

DL LAB. Sookmyung Univ.

– This means DL technologies and contents related to Korea and Korean should be developed by collaboration

• The fourth reason– Current world: facing cross cultural, cross

lingual, cross religion, and multi disciplinary issues

– Future world: understanding and solving the above issues through DL

– This means DL is a road to the harmony of information sharing around the world

Page 16: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

DL LAB. Sookmyung Univ.

• The fifth reason– Korea has many DL scholars who studied in the

State and have had relation with many US scholars

– This means we have no barriers for DL research collaboration between two countries

• Collaboration Areas for the US partner: technologies and contents development for Korean Culture and Heritage DL

Page 17: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

5. Conclusion

• Phase 1 of the Tiger Project– testbed construction – technology development with the US partner

• document structuring• 3D animation and rendering • Browser• automatic linkage of related materials• content development for Korean and English for testbed

– Demonstration of Korean Culture and Heritage DL

Page 18: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

DL LAB. Sookmyung Univ.

• Phase 2 of the Tiger Project– Operational DL construction– Technology development with the US partner

• bilingual and parallel corpus development

• intelligent interface

• Cross information retrieval between Korean and English

• contents expansion

• dictionaries and terminology's database

– DL operation

Page 19: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

DL LAB. Sookmyung Univ.

• Future DL can not be constructed by a

specific country, but will be constructed by

collaboration with all around world especially

by both the East and West

• This is the right time for collaboration on DL

research between Korea and the US

Page 20: The Tiger Project: Korea Culture and Heritage DL 2000. 8. 10 Kim, Sung Hyuk Division of Information Science Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

DL LAB. Sookmyung Univ.

• Korea and US government should support for

the future DL construction

• DL researchers of both countries should share

and collaborate experiences, knowledge and

contents for the future DL
