SUMMER HOLY
Thursday’s
My Dear Friends,
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration,
where Jesus appeared in glory on the top of Mount Tabor
to Peter, James and John. On either side of Jesus were
Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets.
St Paul, in his Second Letter to the Corinthians, says,
“But we, beholding the glory of the Lord face to face, are
transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as
by the Spirit of the Lord.” Just as Peter, James and John
were witnesses to the Lord’s glory at the Transfiguration,
to receive Him in the Holy Eucharist. We are transformed
into His image, and we become a sign of transfiguration
to others as witnesses to the Lord’s love for us.
Recently, in Torrington, we have had two experiences
that have led to our being transfigured for the community
to see the Lord’s glory shining through us. The first was
the final merging into one new parish, St. John Paul the
Great. Through the death of the four parishes comes a
resurrection of one new parish identity, whereby we
are transfigured into the glory of God by showing the
community that we are one new community, a vibrant
community of Catholics that are able to put aside
differences and come together as the Body of Christ
and share our one faith with renewed hope.
New York City, a conference put on throughout different
regions of the United States in order for youth to come
together and pray and worship with other teens and to
hear some amazing talks by men and women who are in
love with our Lord and our faith. Many teens come back
from these conferences with a renewed sense of Catholic
identity and a hunger and desire for our Lord present in
the Eucharist. It is at these Steubenville conferences that
many teens first experience Eucharistic Adoration (even
though we offer it five days a week here in Torrington),
and their experience transforms them. I am convinced
that one of the ways to keep our young people coming
to church is to help them to fall in love with Jesus Christ
present in the Eucharist. If you do not understand the
Real Presence of Jesus Christ, it is much more difficult to
keep coming to Mass every Sunday. But once you fall in
love with our Lord in the Eucharist, and especially when
you seek out times to spend with Him in Adoration, then
nothing will keep you from attending and participating at
Mass every Sunday, and for some of our teens that have
attended these conferences, even participating at Mass
during the weekday. Let us as a parish community under
the patronage of St. John Paul the Great, come together
in glory in order to show God’s glory to a broken world.
God bless.
Fr. John

“Let us love this feast of the Transfiguration. It is entirely Eucharistic. Come to this hallowed mountain on which Jesus is transfigured. Do not come looking for glory or for sentimental bliss, but rather for the lessons of holiness He teaches you by His self-abasement. Come, and by your love and self-denial, be transfigured into Jesus Christ in His Sacrament while waiting to be transfigured into Jesus Christ in His heavenly glory.”
- St. Peter Julian Eymard

DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
The Connecticut Catholic Conference notes that since 1919, the Catholic Church has been a longstanding advocate of universal, accessible and life-affirming health care. However, the Affordable Health Care Act harshly penalizes those employers, such as the Church, who do not provide abortions and other contraception coverage for their employees.

We believe that an engaging, reverent youth liturgy changes the lives of teenagers at a parish.
Many things we do in youth ministry focus on social events, or service; but with LifeTeen,
the Catholic Mass remains central. Much will change in the lives of teenagers, but their connection to Christ through the
Eucharist will always stay the same.
