Open our eyes to your endless possibilities, Give us courage to listen for your call to us. Take our hearts of stone, and make them new again with your holy love. Amen. P. The First Lesson: Exodus 24:12-18 At Mount Sinai, Moses experienced the presence of God for forty days and forty nights. The “glory of the LORD” settled on the mountain, and on the seventh day God called out to Moses. On the mountain God gave Moses the stone tablets inscribed with the ten commandments. 12The LORD said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” 13So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. 14To the elders he had said, “Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.” 15Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. 17Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. 18Moses

4

entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. The word of the Lord. C. Thanks be to God. The Second Lesson: 2 Peter 1:16-21 At the transfiguration, God’s voice was heard, declaring Jesus to be the beloved Son. By the activity of the Holy Spirit, God’s voice continues to be heard through the word of scripture. 16For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” 18We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. 19So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. The word of the Lord. C. Thanks be to God. *The Verse (Sing twice) Celtic Alleluia

*The Holy Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9 Shortly before he enters Jerusalem, where he will be crucified, Jesus is revealed to Peter, James, and John in a mountaintop experience of divine glory called the transfiguration. P. The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the seventeenth chapter. C. Glory to you, O Lord. 1Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. 3Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” 6When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. 7But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” 8And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. 9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” The Gospel of the Lord. C. Praise to you, O Christ. The Sermon *The Hymn of the Day #315 How Good, Lord, to Be Here! *The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

God, pour your Spirit on us all, and on these gifts that we receive; For in Christ's presence we recall his life and death and so believe. *The Offertory Prayer

*The Great Thanksgiving, Proper Preface, and Sanctus P. The Lord be with you. C. And also with you. P. Lift up your hearts. C. We lift them to the Lord. P. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C. It is right to give him thanks and praise. P. *The Sanctus Holy, Holy, Holy Lord

*The Eucharistic Prayer

*The Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

*The Agnus Dei P. Lamb of God, C. You take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on

8

us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

The Distribution of the Sacrament

*The Communion Blessing and Post-Communion Prayer

*The Farewell of the Alleluia P. Brothers and sisters in Christ, when we gather for worship again, the day will be Ash Wednesday. On that day we will begin our solemn Lenten journey to the Savior's cross. While the joy of faith remains undiminished throughout the year, our rejoicing during Lent is muted. For centuries, the Christian Church has omitted the most jubilant word of praise, the Alleluia, which means “Praise the Lord.” P. We are an Easter people. C. And Alleluia is our song. P. Alleluia! Alleluia! C. Alleluia! Alleluia! P. The author of Ecclesiastes writes: For everything there is a season, and a time for ever matter under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. C. A time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted. P. A time to break down and a time to build up. C. A time to weep and a time to laugh. P. A time to mourn and a time to dance. C. A time to keep silence and a time to speak. P. Now for a time we shall say farewell to Alleluia. With this we prepare ourselves for the penitential days of Lent. Thus the Alleluia is sung for the last time and not heard again until it suddenly bursts into glory on Easter Day.

*The Benediction

*The Sending Hymn #318 Alleluia, Song of Gladness

*The Dismissal P. How good it is for us to be here. C. Amen! Alleluia! P. And we have seen the glory of the Lord. C. And we are all being transformed from one degree to another. P. It is by God's mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, so go in peace and courage to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia! Alleluia!
