The Tribune conquers another milestone ADITI TANDON TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI,JANUARY 19 Nostalgia was the flavour of the evening as Prime Minis- ter Manmohan Singh led a gathering of ardent admirers of The Tribune in celebrat- ing the institution’s 130 years of existence. And to see the newspaper conquer another milestone were people from various walks of life, from Union Ministers and Chief Minis- ters of states to distinguished personalities like Marshall of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh whose special men- tion at today’s function by The Tribune’s Editor-in- Chief Raj Chengappa invited an instant applause, that the Prime Minister himself initi- ated from the dais he shared with The Tribune Trustees. HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and Information and Broad- casting Minister Ambika Soni took time off to walk down the memory lane over a cup of tea with friends of The Tribune, many of who they had not expected to see. “We have attended many functions in Delhi but none has had such fine quality of people. Most of the guests today were people who asso- ciate themselves with The Tribune tradition. The common thread that binds them is the love for this newspaper. I had not expect- ed to see Marshall Arjan Singh. I meet Kuldip Nayar occasionally but I had not expected to see his wife Bharti. There was nostalgia in the hall,” Ambika said. Her Cabinet colleagues Home Minister P Chi- dambaram, Housing & Culture Minister Kumari Selja and Delhi Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna also graced the occa- sion as did Jammu and Kash- mir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who kept his reputa- tion of being an avid Twitter when he tweeted after leaving the Vigyan Bhavan premises, “Congratulations to The Tri- bune newspaper for complet- ing 130 years; just attended a function to mark the milestone. PM topped the guest list.” Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Haryana Excise minister Kiran Chaudhry were also seen catching up with guests; as was Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who halted his hurricane cam- paign in poll bound Punjab to assert his connect with The Tribune. HRD Minister Sibal was high on emotion as he remembered his days in Chandigarh: “I am a Chandi- garh boy and I have special affection for The Tribune. It is part of my life. I believe if you look at the quality of journal- ism around, The Tribune is a paper that can be counted as maintaining the highest stan- dards of journalism. It believes in very little sensa- tionalism, hard news and is equidistant from politics.” Also present were foreign diplomats including Pak- istan’s High Commissioner to India, Shahid Malik, Russian Ambassador Alexander Kadakin and Bangladesh High Commis- sioner to India Tariq Karim. The guest list also had a sprinkling of veteran journal- ists and editors like Kuldip Nayar, S. Nihal Singh, TN Ninan, Suman Dubey and BG Varghese, who came with his wife and son. The presence of former Tribune editors HK Dua and Hari Jaisingh and Editor-in-Chief of the Press Trust of India M.K. Razdan, made the evening even more special. As Ambika Soni put it, “the joy of the evening lay in the quality of guests”. The occa- sion had Press Council of India Chairperson Justice Markandey Katju and Chief of the Intelligence Bureau, Nachal Sandhu exchange notes with guests, and other dignitaries like former Rajya Sabha member Tarlochan Singh and Director of Bhai Veer Singh Sadan Mohinder Singh talking about their shared bond with The Tribune. The guest list also includ- ed the former Chief of Army Staff General V.P. Malik, Prime Minister’s Advisor TKA Nair, once the Chief Secretary of Punjab; Lord Meghnad Desai from the UK House of Lords and his wife Kishwar; former Home secretary GK Pillai and his wife Sudha Pillai; former media advisors to Prime Ministers like Ashok Tan- don, who worked with Atal Behari Vajpayee and Sanjay Baru, former media adviser to Manmohan Singh.
