Change and transition
I really wish that I could write this
note to you on October first,
especially with a congregational vote
on September 30th regarding
Trinity’s next Pastor. While I
personally feel that Pastor Peter is an
outstanding candidate who will serve
Trinity well, I also know that nothing
is decided until that meeting on
Sunday, September 30th, at 11:15am.
This means that a lot of things that I
would like to write are premature or
not yet appropriate.
But that is what transitions are like.
They involve times of not knowing
and a steady stream of change. And
they can be times of great hope and
promise at the same time. They can
be frustrating when writing an article
in advance for the Visitor. But please
remember that there are things that
do not change… that there is One who
does not come or go, but remains forever.
For God is present. Jesus’ love remains. The Holy Spirit is still at work at Trinity.
And this does not change. So let’s celebrate that fact, even in this time of
transition.

YAGM Chelsey Johnson to visit Trinity on Oct 21: Missionary Sunday
Chelsey Johnson has recently returned from her year of service in Cambodia through the ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program. In Cambodia, she served with an ELCA partner organization working with farmers in rural Cambodia, taught English at the Phnom Penh Bible School, and lived in community with students in a dormitory at the Lutheran Church in Cambodia. Chelsey saw God at work in her relationships through generous hospitality and patient sharing of Cambodian culture. She is honored to now travel to congregations across the Midwest as a representative of ELCA Global Church Sponsorship, entrusted with these stories and pieces of culture to share with you. A 2017 Honors graduate of Oklahoma State University with degrees in Strategic Communications and Political Science, Chelsey sees much of what she learned in her YAGM year as the first steps towards a career in Global Development, with a particular interest in using agriculture as a catalyst for change. Hailing from a long line of Lutherans, Chelsey was baptized, confirmed, and grew up in a handful of Lutheran communities across southern Minnesota. She is currently a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater, OK, which she attended during college, and where her grandparents have been members for over 30 years. At Salem, Chelsey has been involved with Campus Ministry, local interfaith work, and is a diligent attendee of the Wednesday morning Sewers ministry (where she does NOT sew quilts, but does enjoy coffee with her grandmother and retired friends). Chelsey is energized by meeting Lutherans and hearing about their passions, especially over coffee or potlucks. She looks forward to visiting Trinity on October 21 to share her YAGM experience, to tell about the four young adults from the Northern Illinois Synod currently serving
in YAGM, and to show the incre- dible work being accomplished by ELCA global Companions around the world.
Note: The Trinity budget does not include Global Mission. Instead, we at Trinity fund our Global Mission projects through our special gifts from Missionary Sunday (fall) and from Global Mission Sunday (spring), along with Endowment Fund grants. Your gift helps support four ELCA Missionaries, YAGM, and helps make Health and School Kits and quilts. Through Endowment Fund grants, Trinity also contributes annually to up to six projects worldwide.
Please use the special Missionary Sunday envelope in the pews or the Missionary Sunday envelope in your offering set.
We thank the Holy Spirit for inspiring Trinity members to again support Global Mission activities at Trinity!
God’s Grace to all! Trinity Global Mission Team
Missionary Sunday Sunday, October 21st
Children’s Education Sunday School would like to thank everyone that came to Fall Festival and helped us kick off our new year. It was a great day of wonderful food and fellowship. Your support means the world to us. Trunk or Treat will be October 28th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Faith Hall. We can't wait to see all of the ghosts and ghouls that will come out to play that night. I am also looking for a helper or two that would like to help me decorate cupcakes on the 27th.
Confirmation began with regular Sunday class on the 1st and 3rd Sunday nights from 5:30 -7:30 pm. All members in 6th - 8th grade are welcome to attend See you in Sunday School! Amy Roehrs [email protected]

Exciting events and renewal are happening at Trinity
Lutheran Church! Because of you, your family, and
our congregational family, the gospel is being boldly
proclaimed and the joy of God’s grace in Christ is
celebrated in marvelous ways. Indeed, through our
ministry together, countless lives are being touched
with the love of Christ.
As we look ahead to ministry as a family of faith at
Trinity, we continue on our RENEW initiative that
will help us grow in ministry and ways we can bring
connections with people and Christ. As a part of
RENEW our Sharing, we will be introducing various
ways that you will soon be able to give electronically.
In addition to our website, you will be able to give
from your phone by text or by use of an app. You will
hear more about these new ways in the coming weeks
In connection with this church wide initiative, we will
explore together this Fall ways of responding to God’s
blessings by how we can renew our sharing. We will
see the wonderful gift of God’s grace in Christ and
how it is the foundation of our discipleship and
giving. Our Kick-Off Sunday for “RENEW Our
Sharing” will be Sunday, October 14th. Our fall
emphasis will culminate with a celebration of ministry
and the sharing of commitments of how we can
“renew ourselves” in ministry on Sunday, November
18th.
Plan to be on hand in worship and consider together
how we can “RENEW Our Sharing”. How exciting
it will be to grow together in discipleship and the joy
of generosity.
The next meeting of the Trinity Endowment
Committee will be on Thursday, October 18, 2018.
The Committee meets quarterly in April, July,
October, and December. All grant requests for this
quarterly meeting need to be in the church office two
weeks prior to our meeting or by October 4. This
provides adequate time to organize the agenda, seek
additional information if needed, and distribute the
information to the membership.
All TLC Members in good standing are eligible for a
$1000 scholarship toward expenses related to any
higher, continuing education program. An application
should be submitted after completion of at least 12
credit hours with a GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, or
provide evidence of satisfactorily completing the
course work submitted at a passing level. There is an
option to reapply one time for another $1,000 grant
during a separate academic year as long as students
still meet the above listed standards (for a total award
of $2000 per student).
In addition to the Scholarships category, the other
three categories are Community Outreach, Missions
of the ELCA, and Trinity Church Special Causes.
Each category is allotted 25% of our total funds for
the year. The Trinity Investment Committee has
allotted us $46,162 for awards in the 2018 calendar
year.
The guidelines and application form are available in
the church office or at Trinity's website:
www.tlcmoline.org/endowment/
Questions may be directed to any member of the
committee or to Paul Neder at 517-6972.
Church Council
Trinity’s Church Council has moved it’s meeting time
to the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. As
always, Trinity members are welcome to attend the
meetings. Minutes of the meeting can be found on

Book Notes
Library Lines “A Picture of Freedom: The Diary of Clotee, a Slave Girl, Belmont Plantation, Virginia 1859” (JFic McK) is one in a series of Dear America books. Written by Patricia McKissack, this fictional diary details the life of Clotee Henley, a 12 year-old slave girl in Virginia. Clotee learns to read and write as she fans her mistress’ children during their lessons in the southern summer heat. Her hunger for knowledge and freedom make her easy to identify with. Clotee finds hope in the Underground Railroad and becomes a conductor, leading other slaves to freedom.
Each of the Dear America books is historically accurate and include a historical note section in the back with photos, maps, advertisements and other items from the time period. “Clotee” includes a recipe for sweet potato pie and a hand-written note by Frederick Douglass. Library Lines are written by volunteers from Trinity Church. A review of anything from our church’s library, including videos, is welcome. Reviews from the children’s and youth sections are also welcome.

LIFE
In the month of August, the L.I.F.E. Youth Group met for the first time on the 8th after taking a brief summer break. After returning from Houston in July we found out that Brian would be leaving us and I would step up to take his place, what large shoes to fill. Our first night back was used to welcome in our second leader Brennen DeVolder, and to get reacquainted with expectations and plans for the group. The second Wednesday we had a very faith-based scavenger hunt and a potluck that peaked everyone’s cooking and hunting skills. The following Wednesday the kids enjoyed a night of roller skating. The last week of August we spent here at the church planning for some new and eventful fundraisers for our 2019
Mission trip to Blue Knob, Pennsylvania. We are all very ambitious and excited for the year to come! LeAnna Niebruegge LIFE sent this photograph with the members autographs to Christian artists and speakers that inspire them with a letter letting them know what their ministry means to them.

Pastor Appreciation Month October is such a delightful time of year. Autumn is here with all of its gifts, and we have an opportunity to recognize the Feast of St Luke the Evangelist and Physician and Clergy Appreciation Month! How thankful we are that God provides us with faithful pastors to feed us, guide us, and walk our faith journey with us (John 21: 15-17). Today, the health of clergy is a concern for congregations, denominations, and clergy and their families. Church workers tend to be caregivers to everyone with little time and energy left for themselves and their families. Over time, the physical, emotional and/or spiritual health may suffer. Research has shown that primary stressors in clergy families are: 1) insufficient time together; 2) financial concerns,
and 3) communications issues. It is in light of these concerns, and Christian ethics and love, that we are privileged to be able to support and encourage our clergy, their families, and their ministry. Here are just a few suggestions for you can be a ‘Health Promoter’ and help care for our congregations’ caregivers. Communicate with them!
Contact them if you want to visit. They may not know your concerns unless you tell them. Also ask them how things are going for them.
Know that as much as they would like to, they can’t be everywhere and be everything to everyone.
Actively pray for them and their families (let them know you are their prayer partner).
Let them know how much they mean to you and your appreciation for their ministry.
Encourage and respect their days off and family time.
Be perceptive of issues their family faces, and show concern as you might to other Christian families.
Encourage them to take an active role in personal and family health and well-being and have an annual physical exam.
These are just a few ways to show appreciation and share the love of Christ, by caring for those called to care for us.
Thank You
A great big THANK YOU to everyone who helped out with our 6th annual Care of Creation Local Food Breakfast
on September 23rd! So much work went into preparation, serving and cleaning up - it wouldn't have happened
without you! Special thanks goes to Kathy Lootens, Barbara Steigman, Dave Dwyer, Judy Hartley, Gail Hess and
Joan Ribbeck - we worked together like a well-oiled machine on Saturday morning. And thank you to Ruth unit on
Sunday morning and everyone else who pitched in without being asked. I am always amazed and humbled by how
people at Trinity really step up when they are needed. Thanks so much! Karen Neder

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is
a serious lung disease that, over time, makes it
hard to breathe. COPD is used to describe a
variety of lung diseases, including emphysema and
chronic bronchitis. An estimated 24 million people
have COPD today, about half do not realize it.
Many people mistake shortness of breath as a
normal part of aging or a result of being out of
shape. COPD develops slowly, so symptoms may
not be obvious until damage has occurred.
Common symptoms include an ongoing cough, a
cough that produces a lot of mucus, shortness of
breath (especially during physical activity),
wheezing and chest tightness.
Those most at risk are smokers, former smokers
over the age of 40 and people who have had long-
term exposure to other lung irritants like
secondhand smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes
and dust. Additionally, alpha-1-antitrypsin
deficiency, a rare genetic condition known as AAT
deficiency, can increase the risk of developing
COPD.
If you are experiencing any of the aforementioned
symptoms, you need to get tested by your doctor.
Spirometry is a simple breathing test that your
doctor can use to tell if you have COPD, and if so,
how severe it is. Early screening can also identify
COPD before major loss of lung function occurs.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for COPD.
However, if you have COPD, there are things you
can do to help manage symptoms and protect your
lungs from further damage, including….Quit
smoking, resources at smokefree.gov or 1-800-
QUIT-NOW, there are also medications that your
doctor can prescribe that will help reduce nicotine
craving. Avoid air pollutants (dust, allergens, strong
fumes) See airnow.gov for daily air quality reports.
COPD Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Guard against flu, it is very important to get a flu shot
every fall. Also if you haven’t had the pneumococcal
immunizations, for protection against pneumonia…ask
your doctor if he recommends one for you. Take your
prescribed medications as ordered.
For more information, visit COPD Foundation at
copdfoundation.org or call the information line 866-316-
2673.
Respectfully and prayerfully,
Mary Jane Dimmer, Parish Nurse
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord. Psalm 96:11-12 As autumn begins, take time to look at the beautiful flowers and colors of the leaves and know that they sing for joy before the Lord. Also take time to thank God for His bounty and the crops and food we receive from the exulting fields. Praise God for the provisions He has made for us in providing a pastoral candidate to shepherd Trinity into the future.
