PASTOR’S READ Rev. Joseph Sanford World religions typically have a home base, a geographical center of influence and activity. That home base is almost always in the same zip code as the religion's point of origin.

Hinduism, for instance, was born in India. Today there are Hindus all over the world. But the vast majority of practicing Hindus are currently living in India. Islam arose in modern-day Saudi Arabia. Even though only 15% of the world's Muslims have an Arabian heritage, the Middle East is still unquestionably the center point for Islamic scholarship and worship. Buddhism's roots are in the Far East. There are Buddhists in every corner of the planet, but no one doubts that Buddhism, at heart, is an Eastern religion.

The exception is Christianity. Where, exactly, is home base for the followers of Jesus? The Jesus movement began in Jerusalem. But it didn't stay there very long. Within one generation, Christianity's base was anchored around the Mediterranean Sea, including Italy, Turkey, and North Africa. Whereas the first Christians had been Jews, the second surge of converts were Gentile barbarians (so called because they couldn't speak Greek; thus their conversation, at least to highbrow people, sounded like "bar-bar-bar").

Several centuries later, the center moved again. This time it gravitated to northern and central Europe. Tribes that had once been dismissed as uncultivated and primitive - the Angles, Saxons, Celts, and Huns - embraced the good news of Jesus and ultimately gave birth to a thousand years of European civilization.

Beginning in the 1500's, the Jesus movement hopped the Atlantic Ocean. It came with the missionaries who spread across the Western hemisphere. By the dawn of the 20th century, America began to picture itself as the center of global Christianity. But a lot has changed over the last 100 years.

The fire of Europe's devotion to Christ has cooled down to smoldering embers. Rome, the home address of Catholicism, is a thoroughly secular city, and church attendance in the historic hotbeds of Protestantism (Germany, Switzerland, and England) has declined to around 10%. The United States boasts 300 Christian colleges, 300 Christian TV stations, and at least 1,200 gospel-oriented radio stations, but the percent of Americans who say they follow Jesus hasn't changed at all over the last 40 years.

Nevertheless, Christianity is growing explosively - in other parts of the world.

A century ago the gospel had just arrived in Africa. Today Africa, from a numerical standpoint, is the most Christian continent on Earth. South Korea is home to the largest congregations. Huge revivals are sweeping across Latin America and Asia. It's possible that China has 100 million followers of Jesus, but no one knows for sure. During the most repressive decades of Mao Zedong's leadership, the underground church exploded without any outside assistance.

The global center of Christianity has dramatically shifted from north of the equator to south of the equator. Demographers predict that a "typical" Jesus-follower in the year 2050 will be a person of color whose native language is not English. As recently as 1950, no one could have imagined that.

A few years ago, historian Andrew Walls was asked why Christianity always seems to be on the move - from continent to continent, generation to generation. His answer, essentially, is that God goes where he is wanted.

Whenever parts of the world become "Christianized" - when churches gradually become obsessed with wealth, power, and political clout - spiritual growth and passion fade away. But when people cry out for meaning and truth, it's as if a mighty wind rushes in to fill that void. Time and again, the least powerful, least pretentious, and "least worthy" people get to experience God's gift of spiritual revival.

God goes where he is wanted. That leaves just one question hanging in the air: Are you hungering right now for the Spirit to come and fill the void in your life?

COMMUION SERVICES AT RIVERBEND Pastor Joe Sanford [email protected]

Pastor Joe leads Communion for residents at Riverbend in Jeffersonville once a month on a Sunday. Between 10-15 residents have been coming throughout the Spring and Summer. We sing some hymns (the residents are incredible singers!), hear a short devotion, and then share in Holy Communion. The ministry began back in the Fall of 2018 when Pastor Joe was told by one of the residents that the Protestant Christians there had not received Communion in several years. Kathy Waterman, our Older Adult Minister, offers Communion to our church members individually, but members of other churches had not experienced The Lord’s Supper in a corporate setting. Pastor Joe’s goal is to have Sellersburg UMC involved more and more with ministry at Riverbend (and eventually other assisted living facilities) to offer relationship and connection to a community of people who are often left on the margins and beyond the opportunity of regular friendship and Christian love. If you would like to get involved with our Communion Services, please connect with Pastor Joe at [email protected]. The upcoming services are September 8th and October 13th at 2pm on site at Riverbend: 2715 Charlestown Pike. Come and join us in our ministry with the wonderful people at Riverbend.

Thank you for your donations to Center for Lay Ministries. Since June 1, members have contributed 909 pounds! With the children of families back in school, items that can be included in school lunches are welcome: peanut or cheese filled crackers, Ramen noodles, pudding cups, etc. If you have an abundance of garden vegetables, call me. Toiletry items are welcome too, as well as paper products. Thanks again for thinking of those less fortunate. Jack & Elda Myers

SUMC YOUTH GROUP Lori Rice [email protected]

BINGO at Riverbend: Our Youth Director, Lori Rice, has been leading our youth in ministry at Riverbend one Wednesday per month to play Bingo with the residents. The youth and residents share in competition, laughter, storytelling, and connection purely for fellowship and relationship. They have been going for the past several months which has led to excitement for both the residents and the youth. We are looking for adult chaperones to go and take part in this wonderful ministry with the residents and the youth. The upcoming dates for Youth Bingo at Riverbend are Wednesdays September 25th and October 30th. Please contact Lori Rice if you are interested in investing your time and talent towards this wonderful and fruitful ministry. CONFIRMATION CLASS: Calling all students who are currently

in or have completed 6th grade. Pastor Joe is wanting to begin a Confirmation Class this Fall to run through next Spring. Confirmation is for everyone who has been baptized or is interested in baptism. We will spend several months working through study and outings to explore and understand our United Methodist faith in the wide world of Christianity and our Jewish roots. The end of Confirmation will be a celebration in the Spring

where all Confirmands who complete the course will be admitted into full membership in The United Methodist Church. We will cover topics like: Who is God? Who is Jesus? Who is the Holy Spirit? What is the church? What does it mean to be a Christian? What is baptism? What is Holy Communion? The History of the world church of Christianity as well as the history of The United Methodist Church from its roots in the 18th Century. And also, what it means to be a Methodist in our world today. Please contact Pastor Joe if you or your youth would be interested in hearing more about Confirmaion. [email protected]

The Endowment Committee met the first part of the year and decided not to make any decisions on possible disbursement for 2019 until our next meeting in August. The Ministries designated in our Charter are Missions, Evangelism/Outreach, Children & Youth, Education, Scholarships, Christian Life Development, Music & Arts, Worship, Facilities, and any other Ministry the Committee approves. All Requests for Funds must be completed by November 4. No late applications will be accepted. The Fund Request Forms can be obtained from Marcia Schiller and Pastor Joe.

SUMC MUSIC MINISTRY Mark Ritter [email protected]

“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlast-ing arms. He will drive out your enemies before you, saying, ‘Destroy them!’” Deuteronomy 33:27 (NIV)

This powerful scripture has been read and studied by many Christians over the years. We take comfort in knowing that our God is eternal and that he protects us from the enemy. Because of this, we are promised refuge by leaning on His everlasting arms. I’d like to share with you the story of two special men of God, who inspired by this verse, have gone on to impact countless others’ lives – perhaps even yours.

Back in the late 1800s, two men by the names of Anthony Showalter and Elisha Hoffman had come across this scripture throughout their spiritual journeys. Showalter, an accomplished musician and learned scholar, led a singing school in Alabama. One evening he received two letters from former students. Both of these students had separately written their former teacher to share two very similar, yet incredibly tragic stories. They had both lost their wives and were full of grief and sadness. As it turned out, both widowers were to bury their loved ones on the same day. Heartbroken, Showalter penned them letters of con-dolences and encouragement, and closed both letters with some of the verse from Deuteronomy 33:27: “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms…”

Moved by the situation, he went on to later write a poem, sending it to his col-league Elisha Hoffman, a long-time pastor, friend, and music publisher:

Leaning, leaning, /Safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, /Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Hoffman quickly replied to the letter with the stanzas to the beloved hymn we still sing today – “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.”

What a fellowship, what a joy divine, /leaning on the everlasting arms; /what a blessedness, what a peace is mine, /leaning on the everlasting arms.

O how sweet to talk in this pilgrim way, /leaning on the everlasting arms. /O how bright the path grows from day to day, /leaning on the everlasting arms.

What have I to dread, what have I to fear, /leaning on the everlasting arms? /I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, /leaning on the everlasting arms.

The song addresses many aspects of our lives as Christians, from the delights of being in God’s presence and finding solace through times of hardship to the joyful journey of being a Christian. The final stanza rec-ognizes that with our Savior’s almighty presence we have no reason to worry, fear or doubt. These two men clearly have changed the land-scape of church music and have impacted many believers across several generations.

We truly have something special at Sellersburg United Methodist Church – a fellowship of believers who honor and serve God faithfully. I have been privileged to spend the past three years working in the first service’s music ministry alongside many like-minded, talented people. Our sanctuary choir has been a blessing to the traditional services, and we have been fortunate to have Connie Schlieker leading congregation-al hymns as well as offering heartwarming special musical selections. There are so many countless others who come together week after week, faithfully and selflessly offering their time, talents and treasures to further the kingdom.

I am looking forward to joining in the fellowship and worship of our second service. As I am personally becoming more active in our church, I’d like to ask you to consider how you can do the same. We have a broad scope of ministries at SUMC that you may be interested in. Please feel free to see me or Pastor Joe, as we are always looking to grow together. It is my sincere hope that all our efforts will be pleasing and honoring to God. Each week, I can’t help but fall back to the scrip-ture in Deuteronomy and the resulting song. Together we are leaning on the everlasting arms!

I’m looking forward to worshiping with you Sunday! Mark Ritter

SUMC STEWARDSHIP

October and November are Stewardship Months: On Sunday, October 6th, we will begin a churchwide study and worship emphasis called Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity. Over a period of four weeks, we will look at some of the financial challenges facing us as a nation and examine our own spending, saving, and giv-ing habits. In addition to exploring biblical principles of financial management, we will learn ways to assess

our financial situation and develop a financial plan that will allow us to experience the true joy that comes through simplicity and generosity.

At the end of the emphasis, we will have the opportunity to make personal commitments of giving (Time, Talent, and Treasure) for the coming year. We will consecrate these commitments on Sunday, No-vember 3rd, and Sunday, November 10th. We will walk through the se-ries as a church (with participation by our Sunday Schools) to help our passion of stewardship grow in all areas of our lives. We invite you to go all-in through this series by attending a Sunday School (we have 4 classes who meet every Sunday at 10am), buying your copy of Hamil-ton’s small companion book ($10/book), and devoting yourself to daily prayer about the stewardship you have with God through your time, tal-ent, and treasure. We will be sending out letters very soon to help you prepare for these months. In the meantime, please prayerfully consider joining us through this wonderful and exciting time.
