MFRW Members Running for Office

Dear Friends,

As I complete my first few months as president of the MFRW, I’ve realized

that the job entails equal parts cheerleader, event planner, and communica-

tions director. The heavy lifting in our mission to make Maryland a two-party

state with honest, effective, and responsible government, however, lies with

you. Individually, and as local club members, you all can make an enormous difference in

moving toward that goal. Some of you, nevertheless, may ask “What can I do to help bring

change as a member of the MFRW?” Here are my suggestions:

Be a ‘high information voter.’ Get the news from a variety of sources. Attend club

meetings and public forums. Read the Legislative Updates from Legislative Committee

Chairmen Chris Ronk and Jeff Ferguson during the General Assembly session. (Contact

Sharon Carrick at [email protected] if you’re not on the list.)

Contact your elected representatives about issues that are important to you. Go to

the Maryland General Assembly website at mlis.state.md.us for a wealth of infor-

mation. The same with Congress at www.house.gov and www.senate.gov. If you

can’t send an e-mail because of district restrictions, call and/or write a letter – they’ll lis-

ten! Not a computer user? Have friends help you use theirs.

Attend MFRW events. I may head up the MFRW, but I always learn from more knowl-edgeable and experienced women. Let yourself be inspired. Support MFRW fundraisers; money is like fertilizer – it helps good things grow. Work in a political campaign; help central committee efforts to get out the vote; talk with your friends and family about what they want life in Maryland and America to be like. And, if you’re ready, consider running for office yourself. Over 75 full and associate MFRW members are doing just that in 2014. The best of luck to them all!

These include Deb Rey, Carolyn Rice, Ella Ennis, Jeff Ferguson, Maureen Carr York, Pat Fenati, Ann Hingston, Rose Li, Christine Thron, Kathy Szeliga, Jennifer Gomez, Addie Ekhardt, Janice Fountaine, Sandy Tuttle, Kat O’Connor, Katja Bullock, Martha Schaerr, Anne Koutsoutis, Lorraine Kutchmy, Amy Leahy, Steve Schuh, Anne Rutherford, Faith Loudon, Cathy Vitale, Nancy Hoyt, Jeff Gauges, Lauren Parker, Laura Neuman, Dick Ladd, Rose Brooks, Amalie Brandenburg, Sid Saab, Ed Reilly, Susan McComas, Teresa Reilly, David Seman, Derek Howell, Jeff Gahler, Monica Worrell, Sharon Beam, Curtis Beulah, Carol Kiple, Jean Beulah, Paula Mullis, Jeanne Haddaway-Riccio, Mary Beth Ca-rozzo, Laurie Price, Jennifer Williams, Fran Bergere, Denise Lovelady, Donna Goeller, Nick Panuzio, Laurie Halverson, Francesca Rendell, Mary Burgess, Kathy Afzali, Don Quinn, and Deanna Stewart.

MFRW Board Member Messages - Keeping YOU Informed

Every Tuesday morning at 8:30 for three months, you will find two dedicated members sitting in on

the Republican House and Senate Caucus meetings taking scrupulous notes. They then attend

hearings, observe the Sessions, and report back to our organization as our “eyes and ears” on

Annapolis. Chris reports on Senate legislation, and Jeff reports on House legislation. You can

receive their weekly updates by emailing our Corresponding Secretary, Sharon

Carrick, at [email protected]. Sign up and stay informed.

From the Legislative Team– Chris Ronk (Senate), Jeff Ferguson (House)

From the Chair of MFRW Political Education- Ambassador Ellen Sauerbrey,

As the Chair of Political Education, Ellen is keeping a close eye on National and International politics. She receives

updates regularly from our Republican Congressman Andy Harris , and has many high-level contacts who keep her

informed. She will be sending us information on egregious legislation that will greatly and negatively impact our

lives. Look for her latest update on sky rocketing electric rates. One of her favorite quotes is this:

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy: its inherent

virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” Winston Churchill

From the Awards Chair and 4th VP—Lou Etta McClaflin

I am at your service to help with clarification and questions from your club to help complete the 2013 awards forms. If your club has not participated in the past, I encourage you to do so this year! Any member can be an Awards Chair, and it only takes a few minutes to fill out the forms to get the recognition your Club deserves. I am only a phone call or email away and happy to help you with the process. You may bring your forms to the Spring Board Meeting, but note that the deadline has been extended to June 1. Contact me at 443-614-3957 or [email protected].

From the Membership Chair and Assistant Treasurer—Sylvia Darrow

We are so excited to announce that March will be “March Membership Madness Month”. We are challenging each club to hold a Membership drive at their meetings, distribute flyers, join Meet-Up or other on-line membership building groups, or find other creative ways to increase your memberships. The clubs with the most NEW members recruited (not renewing members) will receive special prizes at our April Conference. We have three brackets: 22 clubs have 10– 25 members, two clubs have 26-35 members, and seven clubs have 36 plus members. Prizes will be awarded in each bracket. Contest begins March 1st! Good luck and go crazy with those Memberships!!!!

The Harford County Republican Women’s

Club held their annual Bull Roast fundraiser on

Saturday, February 22nd. It doubled as a Mardi

Gras celebration with Creole dishes, King Cake,

live music and dancing. They also had Door

prizes, wheels, and basket raffles. Over 200

people attended this fun event.

The one thing she wants more than diamonds…….. The Harford County Republican Women’s Club is selling raffle tickets for a

drawing of this beautiful handgun. Here are the details:

Look What’s Going on in the Clubs (continued)!

On July 20, 2013 the Republican Women of Baltimore County had a very special fundraiser under the heading of "Caring for America." A young Marine who was a machine gunner and scout during to Iraq War spoke to our club and quests about the war, terrorism and the role of America in the war. It was a pot luck barbecue at the home of Carol Randall who is now our MFRW president. The Fisher House Foundation received a donation of $1,764 from us after expenses.

Fisher Houses can be found all over the country where ever there is a military hospital. While the wounded member of a family is in the hospital, the Fisher House provides beautiful housing for the families at no charge. The Fisher House Foundation provided funding to bring the military killed in action this past summer home to their loved ones for burial.

For the 14 year, the Republican Women of Worcester County sponsored a Caring for America program

to send Valentines cards to veterans in four rehab facilities. In spite of the huge snowstorms, the 1st VP and

Programs Co-Chair, Charlotte Cathell, managed to collect cards from schools and send them to the Baltimore

VA Medical Center, Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, Loch Raven VA Community Living and Rehab, and Perry

Point VA Medical Center. We thank our long time supporter and Copy Central Owner Linda Dearing for

packing, shipping and mailing the cards at no charge. We also thank the teachers and students who made the

cards, and we expect to expand the program in 2015.

On February 8, ten members from the

Upper Montgomery County

Republican Women’s Club

attended the Montgomery County GOP

Convention. Chairman Michael Higgs

joined in the photo.

The Convention is free so let’s all attend

next year!

The Potomac Women’s

Republican Club sent 100

stockings to our Maryland

National Guard Troops in AE.

It was a huge but coordinated

effort by many club members,

and the Troops loved the

stockings.

Red Scarf Day, February 18, 2014 Cold weather and snowy roads did not keep our ladies away from donning red scarves and going down to Annapolis for a day of interaction with our Republican legislators.

Delegate Kathy Szeliga

MFRW Happenings

Leadership Training, January 25 The new year kicked off with MRFW Leadership Training at the

Bowie Conference Center. Around 50 people attended this educa-

tional event to learn and network.

We heard from David Craig, Gubernatorial Candidate, who spoke

about the political landscape in Maryland. Nicolee Ambrose gave us

an update on MDGOP activities and what we can do to get out the

vote. We also heard from an impressive young high schooler who

has started a Republican Club at

Bowie High School.

The day was a great success; friends were made and lots of new ideas were shared.

Valentine’s Luncheon, February 10 Wonderful food, friendship and fun was had by all at our annual Valen-

tine’s luncheon, held at Café Mezzanote in Severna Park. The Keynote

Speaker was Laura Neuman, County Executive in Anne Arundel Coun-

ty.

Laura Neuman with Carol, Severna Park Members, Ellen Sauerbrey and Nicolee Ambrose.
