Girlguiding Ashford has over 400 young members across 6 Rainbow units, 8 Brownie units, 3 Guide units and we still have an ever growing waiting list of girls eager to join in the fun.

As a charitable organisation we rely on the time and efforts of our volunteers to ensure that weekly meetings and events run smoothly. So, we are on the lookout for some new volunteers to join in the fun.

Did you set yourself a new year challenge to give something back to the community?Do you remember your time as a Rainbow, Brownie or Guide fondly, and wish you could go back? Or did you miss out as a child, and want to find out what you missed?Do you have any particular skills or knowledge you could offer to our units, on a regular or ad- hoc basis? This could be anything from baking to stargazing, crafting to first aid. Are you an accountant who could offer your services to a unit?Do you like having fun?

If the answer to any of the above is ‘YES’ we’d love to hear from you at [email protected]. All regular volunteers 18+ will be required to complete a DBS check.

Under 18s welcome as Young Leaders - service can count towards DofE scheme, and is useful experience for those looking to go into childcare at a later date.

Futsal

Futsal is an exciti ng, fast-paced small 5 a-side football game that is played by thousands of adults and children across the world. It is FIFA and UEFA recognised.

Whilst it is a sport in its own right, futsal does not compete with football but serves to support it by developing skills that will make children bett er players, both on the football pitch and the futsal court.

The rules are a litt le diff erent from football, with the size of the ball smaller and the ball has a weight inside the ball. There are no throws just kick-ins and there are ti me restricti ons for goalkeepers and for the kick- ins so there is no ti me wasti ng.

Futsal encourages young players to become more agile, faster, stronger and have bett er balance. It also helps youngsters become more comfortable with the ball and give them lots of opportuniti es to practi ce passing, dribbling, turning, shooti ng and ball control whilst under pressure.

Young players will also touch the ball many more ti mes during a game of futsal than they do even in mini football, they will pass more oft en, shoot more and score more goals. They will also practi ce their skills in far more 1v1 situati ons than they will experience in traditi onal football.

Futsal also encourages young players to make quick decisions whilst under pressure and in ti ght spaces and also have bett er spati al awareness.

Ricardinho who is FIFA world futsal player of the year talks about a futsal player’s quick decisions. ‘The biggest quality a futsal player needs is thinking fast – and executi ng fast.

That makes the diff erence. There are players who have bags of technique and players who defend well. But if they can’t think and execute quickly, they normally won’t get the bett er of their opponents. That’s the greatest quality.’

Futsal has been played at St. Michaels School in Ashford since February 2014. Mr Charles Lamb, the sports coach/P.E teacher, has been organising and coaching the sessions. It started with one year group taking part each term, now in this school year 2015/2016, 130 children have taken part in futsal over the year groups. Thanks to Mr. Lane, St. Michaels Head Teacher, who has shared Mr Lamb’s vision and understood the benefi ts futsal has to off er St. Michaels students.

Mr Lamb has asked parents to give feedback on the children to see their opinions of the sport, the club, coaching and why they liked it. These are some of the opinions:

‘He enjoys futsal because it is a team sport and good fun. He thinks the atmosphere is good fun.’

‘She enjoys the teamwork, play and exercise. She fi nds the atmosphere of the club happy and fun. She fi nds the coaching has clear instructi ons that are provided.’

‘He enjoys futsal and says ‘it’s the best thing in the world’, he fi nds the environment to be fun and happy.’

As futsal is so popular at St. Michaels Mr Lamb is looking to set up a futsal club/company, named Futsal First that can off er futsal to more schools and local venues around Spelthorne. Futsal First is looking to launch soon so watch this space!

Ashford Folk Dancers (AFD) recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was a grand occasion where many of the current and past members got together as well as many callers who had led the dances for many years.

Barrie Bullimore, Chairman of AFD, said ‘We were delighted to see so many dancers who joined us to celebrate our anniversary. It was a very successful aft ernoon with Colin Hume leading us, accompanied by Masquerade, a three musician band.’

AFD meets every Wednesday evening from 8 to 10.15pm, except in August, at St Mary’s Church Hall, Green Street, Sunbury. You don’t need to bring a partner, just soft shoes and comfortable clothes. They do various styles of folk dance, most with easy and simple steps and fi gures. A caller tells us what to do over the music, so that everyone can dance together, the fi gures are very similar to a barn dance, if not the same.

Some of the dances are livelier than others so the dances suit everybody. You don’t have to do them all, you can take a rest as you need.

The evening costs £2.00 if you are a member, or £2.50 for non-members. Yearly membership is £2.00. This includes a cup of tea or coff ee and a biscuit during the interval.

Annie Sugrue, a committ ee member explains ‘We dance usually to recorded music, but occasionally we will have musicians playing for the evening. Three ti mes a year the committ ee organises a social dance on a Saturday evening where we invite a caller and a band. Many people from other clubs come to these events and it is always a good opportunity to catch up with the news!’

Elaine Johnson, a regular dancer, concludes, ‘We exercise without noti cing it! We meet and dance with friends, accompanied by lovely music in a nice hall, it’s is such good value for money.”

The response from customer questionnaires has been 100% positive. Please read some of the feedback we have received:

“Swans have a friendly, yet professional approach. They connect with you with a personal touch. I will definitely use them again. Everybody, especially Andy, has been extremely helpful. I could not ask for more. This is our second encounter with an estate agent, the first one we had I definitely would not come back to. I think Swans Estate Agents are honest and have a very reliable service. I will DEFINITELY 100% recommend them to everybody.” Charmaine Jardiel

“Your whole team have been excellent throughout, giving us 100% confidence in the selling of our property. We have already recommended you. Many thanks to you all.” Mr & Mrs M Parsons.

“We found your marketing services were excellent from start to finish. The communication was fantastic throughout the entire process. We will definitely recommend you to friends, family and neighbours and

would have no hesitation in using you again. Having had less than positive experiences with Estate Agents in the past, we have been really pleased with the client care and constant communication that you provided.” The Moorcroft Family

Have you ever wondered how much your property is worth? Even if you have no immediate plans to move home, but are curious as to know the value of your home, then please call us now.

We, at Swans, pride ourselves on our extensive local knowledge and would be delighted to help you, after all it keeps us up-to-date too!

Please call The Team and put them to the test! We’ll be brief, won’t charge for the valuation and there is no obligation – all we ask is that you consider us when you do want to sell or let.

To find out more, please call us on 01784 244510 or pop into our office at 26-28 Church Road, Ashford.

Off to an Exceptional Start in 2016

The Swans team have been amazed how buoyantly the housing market has started in 2016. Not only are most properties selling within the first couple of weeks of marketing, but the asking price or higher is being achieved. This is because the available buyers are easily out stripping the properties that are on the market for sale. If you are considering a move in 2016 now may be the time to call Swans Estate Agents.

Swans are located in the centre of Ashford and are a truly independent Estate Agent. The company was set up by Graham Aldred and Andrew Herring, who are both vastly experienced in the business and are local family men.

As an independent agent with local experience approaching a combined 100 years, we are proud to offer a complete range of services adapted, amended and perfected to achieve

our goal of 100% customer satisfaction. All of the feedback we have received from our customers has been 100% positive and all have said that they would happily recommend us and use us again.

We remain dedicated to the needs of our customers and promise lots more of the same year after year.

Graham states “Andrew and myself set up Swans with one simple aim – to put the customer first”. Both Graham and Andrew have worked for local corporate Estate Agents and felt those companies had lost focus and concern about their customers. As a result, we wanted to show that not all estate agents are the same. Swans will never put our customers and clients secondary to company rules. You are our business and dictate the rules. We believe, as always in being honest, open and professional at all times.

When people ask me what I do, I proudly say that I work for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices as a Community Fundraiser. When I go on to explain the work of the Hospices and that it costs £8.8 million to keep the Hospices open, the response is always – “Why would you choose a job like that?”

It sounds like a lot of money, but when you look at all the free services and specialised care that the Hospices provide for local families coping with a life limiti ng illness, it puts it all into perspecti ve.

You may not be familiar with Woking & Sam Beare Hospices although some of you may know our retail shop in Church Road, Ashford.

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices are independent chariti es providing care through our in-pati ent units, day care faciliti es, counselling, therapies, chaplaincy and children’s bereavement services. What many people don’t oft en realise is that 70% of our care takes place in the pati ent’s home, or a nursing or care home. We have a team of Community Clinical Nurse Specialists who visit people in their home setti ng; supporti ng them to live as independently as possible. So, we provide a lot more than you may think and it’s available to everyone right here in Spelthorne too.

Having outgrown our current faciliti es and with increasing

pressure on our services, we have launched an exciti ng project which will see the conversion of an offi ce block in Woking into a state-of-the-art 20-bedded Hospice and Wellbeing Centre whilst Sam Beare Hospice in Weybridge will be remodelled to create larger Day Care faciliti es and a base for the Community Nurse Team.

Every year we provide care for over 1,200 pati ents and their families in Central and North West Surrey and as demand for our services is increasing, we need the help of the local community now more than ever.

There are many things you can do, large or small to make a diff erence and we’re here to provide support and advice to make it as simple as possible for you. You can join one of the big Hospice events like the Midnight Walk this spring or come up with your own unique idea. Whatever you decide, we will be able to give you all the support you need. Manna, the Food Bank in Staines which serves Spelthorne, opened in late 2012 aft er research showed that there was a need in Spelthorne for the services it could provide. Over three years later, demand for its services is strong and they serve an average of ten individuals or families each week. Manna is a local charity, run enti rely by volunteers, which serves the local people of Spelthorne.

Abigail Honeywell, a member of the Managing Committ ee, says that people are in need for diff erent reasons. “People have applied for benefi ts but there is a wait for them to start. Disabled individuals are ruled fi t to work and there is a many week wait for the appeal during which ti me their benefi ts are reduced. Illness or job loss can hit hard if someone doesn’t have savings. The summer holidays can be hard for those whose children normally get free school meals. We are also seeing an increase in the number of street homeless clients we serve both whilst homeless and to help get started once they fi nd accommodati on.” Manna can step in and help with the immediate need of food and household essenti als and give people ti me to get things sorted out.

Manna operates by referral from statutory and voluntary/charitable agencies who see that the client is in emergency need of food and household essenti als. The referrer provides the informati on to Manna and also provides details of the individual/family so that parcels can be tailored to the circumstances – for example nappies if there is a baby or suitable items for those with reduced or no cooking faciliti es. They deliver parcels Tuesday morning, Wednesday evening and Friday morning.

Abigail explains where the help comes from,

‘We could not do the job we do without the very generous support of local individuals, churches, businesses and organisati ons. We rely on donati ons of food and use fi nancial donati ons to purchase fresh milk, cheese, bread, eggs and potatoes to augment the food parcels.’

If you’d like to donate food, Manna accepts ti nned and non-perishable, in-date, items. Our shortages list is posted on Facebook weekly – please follow us to see the latest. Our website, www.mannafoodbank.org.uk, is being revamped and will shortly go live and will have shortages there too.

We are acti vely seeking donati on points in Ashford. Ideally it would be a business or organisati on that has regular opening hours (evening hours a plus) who would be willing to have a box for donati ons and once a few bags have accumulated, drop it off to us, or we can arrange to have it collected.

I hit my original goal weight in 2003 and maintained it well, however in 2009 I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

After years of treatment I received the brilliant news that I was cancer free. Although medically this was the best news ever the rounds of chemo and radio therapy along with steroids had taken their toll on my body and I was left feeling fat and bald.

I decided to head back to my local Weight Watchers meeting. I lost over two stone but unfortunately my meeting closed. I tried to maintain online but I missed the discipline of the meetings, so in January 2015I decided to fi nd another local meeting. I joined Ashford Bowls Club and met my leader Zoe. I found her to be really inspirational and she motivated me to keep going. I had lost an incredible 23lbs by December 2015, half a stone under my original goal weight.

I was really apprehensive when Zoe introduced me to the Smart Points plan back in December. I really

shouldn’t of worried, it’s a brilliant plan that really helps us make better and healthier food choices. I’m already seeing the benefi ts for both myself and my family.Gillian Washington, 46 years old.

“A terrific night of laughs”The Laughing Chili Comedy Club is run by an Ashford local, Stu Tuner. He has been organising comedians for a night of laughs at the Sunbury venue, Riverside Arts Centre for over a year now.

The theatre-style layout, professional sound & lighting, and intimate atmosphere transforms the night into an eclectic evening of entertainment. The mix of comedians are hosted by a very engaging MC, Tom Holmes. He combines friendly crowd interaction with terrifically funny and well-crafted routines that delight audiences time and again. He is cheeky, versatile, professional, razor sharp and very funny.

Tucked away at the end of The Avenue in Sunbury the Riverside Arts Centre is nicely located a few doors away from a pick of restaurants and pubs to enjoy some drinks or a meal before the show.

The Laughing Chili can accommodate group bookings which is ideal for perhaps a girls’ night, event, or birthday. It also makes a great night out for couples, as the audience can become part of the show it’s easy to mix with others and enjoy a chat during the breaks. Look them up on Facebook and Twitter, as there are often early announcements and special offers.

The bar, with incredibly friendly staff, gratefully supply the crowd with drinks

through-out the evening, at very reasonable prices the drinks are even more refreshing. Every evening hosted brings new comedians to the venue, some more recent ones being:

Jonny Awsum, who exploded onto the professional comedy scene with a crowd pleasing set that’s seen him perform his special feel-good brand of musical comedy around the world. He’s a comedic whirlwind, and has risen quickly from a fresh faced newbie to a highly sought after headline act.

Stevie Gray is a cheeky and very likeable comedian, Stevie’s stage act fuses jokes, music, news stories and audience participation to create an up-tempo energy in any room.

Svetlana (the Oligarch’s Wife) Billionairess, society hostess and fashion icon, Svetlana the Oligarch’s Wife is Britain’s only Knightsbridge based Russian comedian.

Pete Beckley is a local comedian with a quirky deadpan delivery and a sometimes surreal take on things, Staines based Pete has won several comedy awards and now performs all over the UK in venues big and small.

The next night of laughs is planned for Saturday 5th March, followed by 9th April and the 7th May. You can buy tickets online from £12 at www.laughingchili.co.uk, doors open at 7.30pm and show time is 8.30pm.

Ashford Orchestral SocetyWe are a small, friendly orchestral ensemble registered with Spelthorne Community Arts Associati on. We meet at St. Matt hew’s Church on Tuesdays during term ti me from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. We have been established for over 50 years and used to be part of Surrey Adult Educati on Service unti l we formed an independent society about 16 years ago and started meeti ng at the church.

Our conductor is Peter Legge, a former military musician and we play a wide variety of music for pleasure. We enjoy performing at the Christmas Tree Festi val at St Matt hew’s Church every year and have done so since the millennium. We are always looking for new opportuniti es to perform within the community and welcome new members of any standard. Some of our members started playing again aft er taking a break from their instrument for several years, perhaps due to work or family commitments and found that they quickly refreshed their skills and gained confi dence in a safe and welcoming environment. Others were keen to keep their skills going aft er performing at college

or university. We also have members who started learning an instrument later in life and wished to join an ensemble on reti rement.

Whatever your reason for performing, we look forward to welcoming you on a free trial session basis. Please contact Janet Husband (Secretary) on 01784 241027, email: [email protected] or Alison Curti s (Treasurer) on 01784 254288, email: alisoncurti [email protected].

‘I joined Ashford Orchestral Society 18 months ago. I wanted to resume playing, having let practi ce lapse due to pressures of home, work and children for 20 years. Other groups seem to demand Grade 8 and/or an auditi on, which was too daunti ng. The Ashford players don’t - they are extremely welcoming, play to a good standard, but enable progress at your own pace. A friendly and sociable bunch united by their love of music. I can honestly say, band rehearsal is the highlight of my week. Don’t delay, join today!’ Tina Bland – Flauti st.

‘I am indeed an adult but I feel that YA is never too young, it’s what you love to read that counts! So the young adult secti on in Ashford is a passion of mine. I have found that aside from myself, this parti cular secti on is is a litt le bit neglected by our readers. I have recently re-designed this secti on and marketed it as the YA Zone, (not Y-A, just ‘ya’ – pronunciati on is imperati ve here!). This features the latest top ten novels as well upcoming new books we receive. We have a wide range of books and we’ve improved the type of books we used to have. So I would like to invite you to browse and borrow a book. Here is just an example some of the books we have and some of my personal recommendati ons. If you want to come and ask me then I would be more than happy to help.’ - Emma Gray

It was Nati onal Libraries’ Day on the 6th of February, a day to celebrate and support your library and what you love about it.

the library with a chance to win a pile of books.

Even if you missed the NLD, please do visit and support the library. By borrowing books and browsing the wide selecti on of acti viti es books, workbooks and posters at brilliant prices it will keep our libraries open.

National Librares’ Day

‘Hello, Emma Gray here, reporti ng back with another arti cle for the TW15. I am so pleased with the response of my fi rst arti cle I’d like to thank all of you for reading it. It has really promoted and supported the library which is what we need.

This ti me I will focus on the children’s and young adult literature of Ashford Library. But before I begin, please note that in my last arti cle I menti oned that you can renew up to 15 ti mes, however as of January 2016 it has been reduced to 10.’

“Our children’s library is centered in the heart of the building, bringing about the joy and brightness to see the young children begin their journey of reading. Discovering pictures and illustrati ons followed by their fi rst words that tell diff erent stories that inspire so many of us. Whether we are children or adults we have that story that you’ll always remember and will be your favourite forever. It’s a privilege as a library assistant to see our younger readers start their reading journey with us and where it will lead them to in the future.

Every week we have Storyti me and Rhymeti me to help the build and grow their imaginati ons, so please do come and join in and be a part of our Children’s Library. The best bit is it’s fun and free.

Rhymeti me is on Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30am for half an hour. Storyti me is every Tuesday at 3:45pm with a diff erent theme every week and colouring or craft . Look out for our school holiday specials and easter craft s too.”

LVL stands for Length Volume Lift , so unlike the regular lash perm, which uses rollers and curls the lashes back on themselves, LVL lift s and straightens your natural lash from the root, so they appear much longer, with a ti nt added, it leaves you looking like you have mascara on.

The treatment takes about 45 minutes to perform and lasts between 6-8 weeks depending on the conditi on of your lash.

This treatment would be great for anyone who has incredibly straight lashes, or uses eyelash curlers and cant get the lift to hold.

Great for holidays, or if you swim too, as your lashes stay lift ed and looking fantasti c. Will truly open up the eyes, and makes you appear more alert.

“I have personally been addicted to my eyelash curlers all my life, well as long as I can remember, and would never leave the house without mascara on! I could not live without it. Eyelash lift whether it be by curlers or other methods is one of the best ways to open your eye up, now with LVL I wake up in the morning and I’m good to go, with or without mascara, it really is phenomenal and is something I recommend anyone to try. The amazing thing also is that there is no maintenance.”

Invest in new clothes or a makeover during the early days of March. Looking your best will improve both your personal and professional lives. If you're single, you could meet someone special in a library, bookstore or classroom. Are you already in a relationship? Your union could experience some difficulty around the 9th, due to a disruptive Solar Eclipse. Being more attentive, supportive and giving is critical to this union's health. Don't impose your family's beliefs on your amour. The two of you may have been raised very differently. It's unfair to expect them to have the same priorities and values. Finding a middle ground is possible during the second half of the month, when you'll be able to make some personal sacrifices on behalf of your partner. A Lunar Eclipse on the 23rd will cause a source of income to dry up. Don't panic. It may take time to find a steady job, so be patient.

Fun and games are earmarked for the opening days of March. Give yourself a chance to enjoy some amusements, even if it means putting work on the back burner. Let a relative, neighbour or friend introduce you to a new sport or hobby. You may discover an affinity for this pursuit. A Solar Eclipse on the 9th could make you aware of a health problem. It may take some time to get this illness properly diagnosed. Be patient and don't subject your body to intense workouts or heavy foods. Some holistic therapy could be helpful during the second half of the month. Let your best friend or romantic partner relieve you of chores while you recover. You may decide to upgrade your appearance on the 23rd, due to a Lunar Eclipse. Saying goodbye to the past and embracing a more cutting edge look is strongly advised. A business or romantic partner can help you with valuable knowledge and know how as April approaches.

Spending time with your nearest and dearest lifts your spirits in early March. If you have a chance to work from home, take it. You'll be much more productive in familiar, comfortable surroundings. Moneymaking opportunities are available to you, but you'll have to pursue them. Adopting a passive stance could cause you to lose a terrific job to a rival. Be willing to promote your abilities and introduce yourself to influential people who can advance your cause. A Solar Eclipse on the 9th could force you to adopt a new approach to your creative work. Be open to criticism, even if it stings a little. There will be lots of trial and error involved with an art project during the second half of the month. A tasteful friend will offer good advice about improving your performance. A Lunar Eclipse on the 23rd will force you out of the shadows. You'll have to assume a more public role at work.

People will be open to your ideas in the opening days of the month. Use your expertise to uplift and inspire newcomers who want to make a mark in your favourite field. A home improvement project will increase the value of your investment. If you don't own your home, there will be an opportunity to raise the money for a deposit. A Solar Eclipse on the 9th warns against buying a property. Postpone such a purchase until later in the year, when you'll be in a stronger financial position. This is a time to accumulate money, not spend it. An exciting career opportunity will arrive during the second half of March, changing the course of your life. Doing work that is both lucrative and satisfying will be the answer to a prayer. Breaking away from an oppressive group will be liberating on the 23rd, when the Lunar Eclipse causes you to question the company you keep.

Working behind the scenes can result in some exciting moneymaking opportunities. Early March is a wonderful time to increase your income. If you have your own business, raise your rates. Good clients and customers will be happy to pay more for superior products and service. Think twice about making a public presentation or talk on the 9th. That's when a Solar Eclipse can cause others to take your remarks out of context. You may have to repeatedly defend yourself during the second half of the month. Keep a low profile. Working behind the scenes will be more rewarding and less stressful. A Lunar Eclipse on the 23rd will bring an end to a painful career matter. Take this opportunity to spend more quality time with your nearest and dearest. Having an enriching personal life is critical to your professional success. If you have to take a break from work, do it with an open and grateful heart.

Your personal charm is a force to be reckoned with in early March. Take this opportunity to attract love and admiration. If you're already in a relationship, you'll be able to twist your amour around your little finger. Ask for a favour or press your agenda. A Solar Eclipse on the 9th will attract a moneymaking opportunity, but there will be plenty of strings attached. You might want to hold out for a job that allows a greater measure of freedom. If you do accept this position, treat it as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. During the second half of the month, money from an inheritance, refund or legal settlement will improve your financial situation. Put as much as this windfall as possible into a savings account, where it can protect you from economic uncertainty. A Lunar Eclipse on the 23rd could cause a hero to fall from grace.

Operating by stealth is strongly advised in the early days of March. You'll win the admiration of a demanding authority figure with your humble attitude. When a high profile job becomes available, go ahead and apply. Your application will go straight to the top of the pile. Be ready to promote your strengths and accomplishments. If you don't, nobody else will. Resist the temptation to overhaul your appearance on the 9th, when a Solar Eclipse undermines your confidence. Trying to please a shallow person will be an exercise in futility. If you're looking for love, you could find it with an old friend during the second half of the month. Are you already in a relationship? Your amour will have exciting news about a job or creative opportunity. Go out and celebrate. Don't make the mistake of getting deep in debt on the 23rd. That's when a Lunar Eclipse will force you to become more financially responsible.

You're particularly drawn to rebellious types who are tremendously accomplished. If you're already in a relationship, it will feel like you and your amour are enjoying a second honeymoon.
