- Father Christmas brings presents to children on Christmas Eve – 24th December.
- The presents are left under the Christmas Tree.
- On 24th December, at midnight, people go to church for the “Missa do Galo”.
- The Nativity Scene (or Presépio) is also a traditional Christmas decoration in Portugal.
- On Christmas Eve people eat codfish (bacalhau) with green vegetables and boiled potatoes.
- On Christmas Day Portuguese families eat turkey, roast lamb or octopus.
- How do you say Merry Christmas in Portuguese? "Feliz Natal” or “Boas Festas!"
- What is the name for Santa Claus? “Pai Natal”
- Christmas Eve is known in Portuguese as “Véspera de Natal”

Christmas at our School
We celebrate the Christmas spirit with Christmas Carols in the school and also in the local community by going around and singing them in elderly homes.
