Goonhilly is one of the most recognised names in the Space Industry. It’s famous throughout the world for being one of three earth stations involved in the first trans-Atlantic TV transmission (via Telstar) in 1962. It was present at the birth of Intelsat, Eutelsat and Inmarsat as well as the birth of the Internet as networks on the East and West coasts of USA were linked to Europe.

Goonhilly beamed the Moon landings to millions of viewers in 1969, Live-Aid in 1985, it took part in almost every major satellite communication development becoming the UK’s main route for international telephone calls via satellite, and it was the largest ground station for the INMARSAT network. As well as these astonishing firsts, Goonhilly was one of the main drivers of the new commercial economy of space communications opening up a gateway between the new satellite operators and the international telephone, TV and data networks.

Goonhilly is synonymous with innovative British engineering and technological skills and for being at the heart of the satellite communications industry. Now, under the private ownership of Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd (GES Ltd), it continues to expand its commercial satellite communication service portfolio and is leading the way on private sector deep space communications.

Through GES Ltd, Goonhilly has received a major private capital investment programme, and this has recently been backed by UK Government support: GES Ltd has been given “Enterprise Zone” status – the government’s flagship programme for technology parks which will bring significant additional capital investment and offer benefits to incoming customers.

GES Ltd is winning new commercial business and providing services to all of the major satellite operators as well as providing a diverse portfolio of space communication and data related services to a broad customer base.

At GES Ltd, we welcome partnerships and collaborations and we are motivated to find the best solutions for all of our customers.

Goonhilly Earth Station presents a unique opportunity for high quality data centre provision in an iconic setting. We are carrier neutral and currently have dual and diverse fibre connectivity from each of two separate vendors (Jisc & BT), and the potential to expand terrestrial bandwidth. Goonhilly is the landing point for the SEA-ME-WE-3 sub-sea cable (2 fibre pairs with multiple wavelengths and a design capacity of 12.8 Tbit/s) connecting Europe to Asia, and cross-strapped into a number of other sub-sea cables with landing stations in Cornwall. Redundant IP6 PoPs make us a direct peering point on the internet.

Our connectivity through Jisc (the commercial arm of the UK academic network, JANET) gives us unprecedented direct connectivity to London Telehouses, as well as every university in Europe, Google, Microsoft, BBC, Netflix, Akamai, BTNet, NHS (N3), Pipex, Linx and Geant. We also benefit from the Jisc network performance excellence, which has been fantastic since its early deployment.

Implementation of ISO 27001 accreditation is underway. The data centre is served by a major 11 kV power distribution network meeting Tier 4 (99.995% availability) standards. As part of the energy mix available, customers can also benefit from our 350 kWatt solar PV array to enhance their “green energy” credentials.

The existing data centre buildings are already built to a high specification with A & B power supplies, raised floor and high ceiling voids for efficient air conditioning, and we aim to install ‘cold aisle’ rack suites and modular N+1 air handling and UPS systems offering the best possible cooling efficiencies and power security. Goonhilly Earth Station is well connected yet geographically remote, and thus gives good physical diversity from existing data centres. With a range of low latency national and international connections, GES Ltd are able to offer a range of hosting and co-location services. All of this means that getting lots of data to Goonhilly is simple and cost-effective.

DATA CENTRE CAPABILITIES

Page 14: THE UK’S SPACE COMMUNICATIONS GATEWAY - · PDF fileOUR CORE VALUES “To create the UK’s space communications gateway and a recognised centre of excellence in communications engineering,

GES Ltd have been commissioned to deliver a number of bespoke communications based projects. By way of example, we have worked with a major client on the design of a containerised reference earth station that may be shipped to any location around the world for testing satellites and earth stations. Tasks included major modifications to an existing 3.7 m, trailer-mounted antenna so that it could fit into half the space of a standard high cube 40’ shipping container. The other half of the container accommodates a test area including high power amplifiers, RF switching, earth station control, test equipment and computers, allowing the facility to be remotely viewed, controlled and operated over the internet.

GES Ltd also adapt and modify antenna systems to develop and support a range of services from TV to TT&C and we are currently undertaking major refits on three of the largest antennas at Goonhilly (from 26 m to 32 m diameter) to repurpose them for radio astronomy and deep space communications.
