FACTS
• The capital is Pago Pago. People born in American Samoa, are American nationals, but are not American citizens unless one of their
parents is a U.S. citizen. The 2000 census showed a total population of 57,291. Foods
served on ceremonial occasions include daily fare plus whole pigs, potato salad, chop suey,
puddings, cakes, and ice cream.
GUAM
Guam is an island in the western Pacific Ocean, unincorporated territory of the United States.
It is one of five U.S. territories with an established civilian government.
FACTS
• The island's capital is Hagatna. The population is 178,430 and has an area of 212 square miles
549 km2. Traditional culture is visually manifested in dance, sea navigation, unique
cuisine, fishing, games, songs and fashion influenced by the immigration of peoples from
other lands.

Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands.

Puerto Ricans have been granted U.S. citizenship in 1917 due to the Jones-Shafroth Act. The act was signed into law by President
Woodrow Wilson on March 2, 1917.
PALAU
• Palau officially the Republic of Palau is located the Pacific Ocean.

• The capital is Ngerulmud. Palau has an area of 459 km2 or 177 sq miles, with a population of 20,000. Palau adopted its own constitution in
1981, and the governments of the United States and Palau concluded a Compact of Free
Association in 1986.
MICRONESIA
• Micronesia is a sub-region of Oceania, comprising hundreds of small islands in the
western Pacific Ocean.
FACTS
• The capital is Palikir. The population is 133,144. The people today form many ethnicities, but are
all descended from and belong to the Micronesian culture. The Micronesian culture
was one of the last native cultures of the region to develop. It developed from a mixture of
Melanesians, Filipinos and Polynesians. Because of this mixture of descent, many of the
ethnicities of Micronesia feel closer to some groups in Melanesia, Polynesia or the Philippines.
