On the occasion of New year of Snake (Quy Ty), the University of Danang (UD) held a meeting and honored newly-recognised As-sociate Professors and PhDs in the year of 2012.

Notably in 2012, UD has 6 new Associ-ate Professors and 51

PhDs (75% of them were graduated from overseas). This is an impor-tant human resource for the sustainable development of UD.

At present, there are more than 350 young staff from UD studying in many countries in the world. This signifi-cant number proves the positive impact of the incentive policy of UD toward the young staff. It is noted that all young staff at UD commit to study to get higher degrees at overseas institutions within 3 years after recruitment.

As a result, the percentage of faculty with doctoral degrees at UD will reach over 25% in three years.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYPreliminary Conference on Center Activities

On 3 March 2013, UD held a Preliminary Conference on activities at the Centers for scientific research and technology transfer.

Currently, UD has 17 fully self-financing centers for re-search and technology transfer. The Centers have made significant contribution to the application of research achievements into practice and to the improvement of the educational quality at UD.

L’Oréal- Unesco Scientific Scholarship 2012 Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Xuan, Lecturer at the

Department of Chemistry, University of Science and Technology – UD, received L’Oréal - Unesco scientific scholarship of the year 2012. Conduct-ing the project “Research on a model of cultivat-ing microalgae to create biomass for an appli-cation in biofuel production”, the author tested a new method in the treatment of waste water with organic matter in the cultivating microal-gae, thereby modeling cultivating microalgae in accordance with the scale of production.

ROBOCON 2013 To prepare for taking part in the Innovation Competition Robot Vietnam 2013, UD held the Final Round of UD Contest to select the 8 top teams which were nominated to participate in the Central Region Qualifier.

After the Central Region Qualifier, UD had 2 teams qualified to participate in the National Fi-nal Round with 32 outstanding teams selected from 180 teams in the regional qualifiers.

In the National Final Round, BKD-PTC team (University of Science and Technology- UD) won the third prize and the “Technology” award.

UD’s achievements in the Robocon com-petitions in recent years are as follows:

2007: BKDC team won the National Cham-pionship and represented Vietnam to partici-pate in the Robocon Competition for the Asia - Pacific region. The BKDC Team was awarded for “Best Idea” and received a Cup from the Sponsor Misumi.

2008: The Ngu Hanh Son team (Marble Mountains) won the runner-up prize at the National Final Round.

2010: The BK-MEPRO team participated in the quarter final and gained the “Technology” award.

2012: The BK-SPIRIT won the runner-up and the “Technology” award

Closing Ceremony on Contest “Creative Summer: Research and Application Development for Mobile Devices”

On 3 January 2013, UD held a Closing Ceremony and awarded prizes for the contest “Creative Summer: Research and Application Develop-ment for Mobile Devices.”

Since June 2012, the Creative Summer contest has been held by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment in collaboration with the Software Development Center (SDC) - UD. The contest has re-ceived enthusiastic responses from students who are passionate about innovative research, especially research and development of applica-tions in mobile devices using the Android operating system.

The First Prize was awared to Hoang An, Ninh Van Ngoc and Nguyen Quoc My for the software “Look-ing up multilingual diction-ary on the UD Smart Book”.

The Second Prize was awarded to Cao Quang Binh for software “English pronunciation on mobile devices.”

The Third Prize was awarded to Vo Dai Luong, Quang Hoang Quoc, and Nha Hoa Phuoc Vo for the software “Student’s Score Management on Smart Book”

The UD Software Devel-opment Center (SDC) has developed tablets with the Smart Book brand for UD students.

Honorary Doctorate Conferment Ceremony

On 29 March 2013, the Univer-sity of Danang held the Honorary Doctorate Confer-ment Ceremony for Dr. Wolfgang Heu-bisch, Minister for Scientific Research and Arts, Bavaria state (Germany) and Dr. Erich Leje-une, the founder and chairman of the charity organi-zation “Heart for the Heart” to honour their contributions to the educational, medical, scientific and humanitarian activities in Viet-nam.

PhD and Masters Degree Ceremony

On 4 January 2013, the University of Danang held the degree ceremony to confer PhD degrees to 5 PhD students and Masters degrees to 736 graduate students who have successfully de-fended their theses. It is noted that there have been 53 PhDs and about 5,500

Masters’ students graduated from postgraduate programs at UD since these programs were commenced 22 years ago.

On 30 January 2013, the University of Economics - UD held the graduation ceremony to undergraduate students, cohort 2008-2012.

In this ceremony, 969 out of 1544 undergraduates of the cohort (accounting for 62.75%) were recognised graduation and awarded the degrees. The rest have not been recognised graduation due to lack of the qualified foreign language out-come requirements. It is the lowest proportion of graduates since the adoption of the credits training and outcome re-quirements to ensure the commitment to academic quality.

On 31 January 2013, the University of Science and Technolo-gy - UD held a graduation ceremony to undergraduate students, cohort of 2008-2013, including full time students, inter-college students cohort 2010-2013 and part-time students cohort 31. These undergraduates were awarded Engineer and Bachelor of Science degrees. Of the total number of 1,259 students receiving degress in this ceremony, there were 585 full-time students and full-time inter-college students and 674 part-time students.

Japanese Language Proficiency Test at UD

Graduation Ceremony at the University of Economics - UD

The University of Foreign Language Studies - UD in collaboration with Japan Foundation to organise “Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Phase 1, 2013”. There were 1,223 contestants from Da Nang and other provinces of Central re-gion taking part in this phase.

Japanese Language Proficiency Test is for people whose mother language is not Japanese. Since 2010, the exam has been organised at 5 dif-ferent levels: N1 (the highest level), N2, N3, N4, N5. The components of the test include vocabulary, listening, reading comprehension and grammar. Da Nang is one of the three test venues in Viet-nam. The others are Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

With the development of relations between Vietnam and Japan, there have been more and more Japanese enterprises investing in the Cen-tral region; therefore, the number of learners wishing to participate in “Japanese Language Proficiency Test” in this region has been increas-ing rapidly.

The Phase 2 of the test will be held on 01 De-cember 2013.

Visit to the University of KITAKYUSHU

From 19 to 23 February 2013, the UD delega-tion led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Van Nam, visited the University of Kitakyushu (Japan) on the invita-tion of the President of University of Kitakyushu. During the visit, the representatives of the two universities had some discussions and signed an MOU for developing cooperation of training and scientific research.

First meeting of UD Council for Educational Quality Assurance

Right after being set up, the UD Council for Edu-cational Quality Assurance held its first meeting on 20 March 2013 to discuss and approve some im-portant issues relating to QA policies and plans.

The QA plan for the year 2013 include 32 sig-nificant activities focusing on institutional accredi-tation, training program accreditation, QA staff development, QA network, strategic development plans for UD and its members, student surveys, staff evaluation, development of QA international projects,…

On 26 January 2013, the Department of Educa-tional Quality Assurance organized a training work-shop on self-assessment process in quality accredi-tation at the College of Information Technology.

Seminars on educational quality assur-ance

On 5 March 2013, UD in collaboration with Aston University, UK held a seminar “Ensuring Education Quality: Experiences from the United Kingdom” fo-cusing on the following themes:

- Quality assurance activities at universities in the United Kingdom in general and at University of Aston in particular;

- The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) in the UK;

- Aston University’s perspectives on quality assur-ance and its operations to ensure the quality of ed-ucation at Aston University in collaborative training.

Training workshop on self- assessment process in quality accreditation


On 5 January 2013, UD Student Association held a ceremony to celebrate the 63rd Anniversary of the Traditional Vietnamese Students’ Day (09/01/1950 - 09/01/2013) and the Festival “Proud of UD Students”. The events were part of the traditional education activities of 63 years of development and growth of the Vietnam-ese Student Association, celebrating the success of the 10th National Youth Union Congress, improving the quality of education and training, expressing the students’ desire to contribute and establish their careers.

In ad-dition to Student As-sociat ions from UD m e m b e r s , the Festi-val also at-tracted the

participation of student associations from the College of Commerce, the College of Economics-Planning, the College of Transportation II, and the Danang Vocational Training College.

At the ceremony, UD Student Association commended students achieving “5 Good Honours” at the national and UD levels,”Stars of January” awards. The outstanding stu-dents overcoming difficulties in learning and actively par-ticipating in the activities were awarded scholarships by the Cathay Life Insurance Co., Equest Academic Scholarships in Da Nang.

“SAMSUNG ASIA ELITE 2013”

On 30 March 2013, the Intern Re-cruitment and Selection of Asian Young Talents Program was held by UD and the SAMSUNG Corporation. The program attracted nearly 700 students enrolling voluntarily via the website of the Department of Stu-dent Affairs.
