SMH Vision, Mission, ValuesDespite the uncertainty of what lies ahead for the healthcare industry, focusing on what we can control is key to ensuring Slidell Memorial Hospital will thrive in the future. We can control our focus and behavior by looking to the SMH Vision, Mission and Values. If we conduct ourselves in a manner consistent with these ideals, our community will always embrace SMH as their hospital for life. The following Vision, Mission and Values were created by a group of SMH employees:

Vision: To become nationally recognized for superior quality

Mission: To improve the quality of life in our community

Values: • Positive Attitude • Compassion • Professionalism • Knowledge/Competency

The Values, in particular, are very simple to reflect upon for focus in our daily activities. The values reach deep into how each member of our team conducts him- or herself. Simple actions, such as: • Keeping patients informed of the process of their care conveys knowledge and competency, building the patient’s complete trust. • Keeping the patient care areas quiet demonstrates compassion for patients’ feelings and professionalism toward their treatment experience. • Performing tasks timely shows compassion for the patient’s desire to get well as soon as possible and an obvious indication of professionalism. • Conducting work with a positive attitude helps in delivering the best care possible to patients.

Working through each day with a focus on delivering superior service, quality and safety allows SMH to improve the quality of life here in this community. Slidell Memorial’s culture is governed by simple rules that make it the best choice in

Slidell. SMH is truly your hospital for life.

In case you were wondering, there are still one or two streets that we can make a mess on!!! Only kidding, team. The reality is that many of the “make ready” projects in preparation of the building expansion are nearing completion. Here is a short list of the progress:

• The SMH Fitness Park has opened with a ribbon cutting on Apr. 3. There were City of Slidell Council members, SMH employees, board of commissioners, department directors and senior team members in attendance. This beautiful new addition provides opportunity for relaxing walks and challenging cardio equipment – all in a tree-shaded park! Please visit this new area and check it out.

• The Materials Management Building Renovation project is well under way. You may have noticed the sidewalk and previous physician parking area were demolished to refurbish a new “service court” where all trucks will deliver materials to SMH. This will significantly reduce the traffic flow on 12th Street and reduce truck traffic in the adjoining neighborhoods.

• The conversion of 14th Street to “two way” is complete. Not without a little excitement, this change occurred on March 13th. Please use caution as some habits are hard to break. The signalization provides for a safe way to turn south.

• 12th Street resurfacing is in progress at this time. This project will require coordination with the tenants of MOB I and SMH staff that use this parking facility. The driveway entrance/exit on 12th Street to MOB I must be replaced. To accomplish this, we must alter the traffic pattern for approximately two weeks. On Apr. 28, the MOB I Parking Garage will close to all traffic for 24 hours beginning 8 a.m. on Sat., Apr. 28, until 8 a.m. on Sun., Apr. 29. When the MOB I Parking Garage reopens, vehicle access will be limited to one lane for incoming and exiting traffic on 12th Street. Security guards will be provided on 12th Street and in the Garage to facilitate and monitor the traffic flow. The guards will be in place from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Please use extreme caution and patience if you must use MOB I Parking Garage. Construction on the driveway will take two weeks.

• The general contractor for the ED/Cardiology Building Expansion Project has been awarded to Citadel Builders, L.L.C. We are excited to have such an experienced builder for this project. You may remember this was the company that built the SMH Regional Cancer Center. Construction is set to begin in the first week in May 2012 with completion slated for May 2013.

Your patience and cooperation has made this enormous project go smoothly and is much appreciated.

Slidell Memorial Hospital Foundation and St.

Tammany Homestead will host Rooftop Rendezvous

2012 on Friday, May 18, from 8 to 11 p.m. on the

rooftop of the SMH parking garage, 1001 Gause Blvd.

Dancing under the stars to the beats of The Nobles, fabulous food and fun are expected to attract

approximately 500 people to this now-annual fundraising event. A ticket sales contest with a

grand prize of dinner for eight at Chateau Bleu has added to the excitement this year.

“The ever-popular, hand-painted collectible pigs will be joined by other great auction items,

including a skydiving adventure, a charter fishing trip, Saints tickets and a vacation in the Cherokee

National Forest of Tennessee,” said Sam Caruso Jr., SMH Foundation’s acting executive director.

“We’re excited about making the event bigger and better each year.”

Abita Brewery and Trinchero Family Estates Vineyard’s special libations will be accompanied by

an array of summer cocktails from Glazer’s Wholesale Liquor.

For the fifth year in a row, Mayor Freddy Drennan and his chefs will be serving 300 pounds of

his famous brisket. He starts two days ahead to slow roast it, and he still isn’t giving out his

recipe. This has become a highly popular signature dish at the event.

This year’s menu includes:

• Bistro de la Reine’s charbroiled oysters

• Silver Slipper Casino’s lollipop lamb chops over mushroom couscous with a

rosemary demi glaze

• Copeland’s white chocolate bread pudding and shrimp over cheesy grits

• Palmetto’s shrimp remoulade in lettuce boats

• Sunrise on Second’s jerk pork with Caribbean rice

• Chesterfield’s seared tuna atop a bed of spring mix and toasted crouton with a

Korean BBQ sauce

• Specked T’s, Patton’s, Bonnie C’s, and Pizza Depot are planning

Imaging Center, Fit as a Firefighter summer camp for children, SMH Parenting

Center as well as health screening and education programs serving more

than 5,000 school children.

Reserved tables for eight are available for $1,200 and individual tickets are

VIOLA COCRAN has been involved in Slidell Memorial “from the ground up” – literally. From the early 1950s, when she helped lobby for the construction of the community hospital, through 50 years of service as a Volunteer in many different departments at the hospital, Cocran has been a steady force, quietly and diligently helping improve the quality of life and healthcare in east St. Tammany Parish.

“For many of our staff and doctors, it’s going to seem very odd not to see and talk with Miss Viola when we come in to work each day. She has been truly devoted to the hospital – she has worked Monday through Friday throughout all these years,” SMH Volunteer Coordinator Laurie Manley said. “Her hard work, dedication and determination have helped make SMH the community resource it has always been.”

Chief Executive Officer Bill Davis invited staff, physicians, volunteers and the community to a reception earlier this month in the SMH Atrium to celebrate and thank her for her service to SMH and the community.

In the early 1950s, Cocran served on the steering committee that lobbied to establish the hospital. She stood proudly next to other community leaders when SMH broke ground. She helped get the newly built hospital ready before it opened its doors to the first patient. Cocran has held many different volunteer positions during her career at SMH. She has volunteered in Administration, Information Technology Services, Patient Relations, Medical Staffing and Volunteer Services. Many days, she was the first person in the office and the last to leave for the day, according to Manley. Even though many of her volunteer hours were not tracked in the early years, she has accumulated more than 50,000 hours since 1990.

Cocran has served as Auxiliary President three times, held all Board positions at least once and chaired most of the committees at one time or another. She has been honored with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Ageless Hero of Louisiana Award, AARP’s Exceptional Community Service Award, New Orleans CityBusiness Health Care Hero Award, Louisiana Hospital

Association’s Auxilian of the Year Award, SMH’s Volunteer of the Year Award (eight times), and SMH’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

COMMUNITY TREASURE VIOLA COCRAN RETIRES AS SMH VOLUNTEER AFTER 50 YEARS

HAVE YOU WOW’ed SOMEONE TODAY?

KODY WOODS (TELEMETRY): Offered to stay late and help the next shift. Always helpful and does a great job!

FELICIA BELL (2 EAST): Felicia was very considerate and patient while helping me learn to breastfeed my newborn baby. Her guidance and thoughtfulness made me feel confident and less stressed.

BRUCE LAMPKIN (ENGINEERING): Bruce spent two hours getting bricks up from the Cancer Center and always works tirelessly on helping us with projects. He is one of the hardest working guys at SMH!

Pediatric nurse practitioner Amy Dendinger has recently joined the Slidell Memorial Hospital Physicians Network Team. Dendinger is seeing patients in the SMH Center for Family Health, 901 Gause Blvd., which will soon have a pediatrician on staff as well.

Dendinger and her husband Roger live in Slidell and have five children, two of whom are adopted. She takes pleasure in working with families to educate them about healthier lifestyle choices, such as nutrition, safety and physical fitness.

Dendinger is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She has a master’s degree in nursing, is nationally certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner, and is licensed to see patients from birth to age 21.

NEW OUTPATIENT PHLEBOTOMY LOCATION

The SMH Laboratory has moved all outpatient phlebotomy services to a newly-renovated area in Medical Office Building, Suite 160. This area is located immediately behind the MOB Main Registration. The Laboratory will accept all outpatient laboratory orders in this area, including standing orders. Please inform patients of this relocation when sending them to SMH for outpatient laboratory testing.

All patients with new orders will still need to register in the MOB Registration area before proceeding to Suite 160. All patients with standing orders should report directly to Suite 160; no registration is necessary.

As a reminder, all of the necessary patient information should be printed/written on the Outpatient Diagnostic Order Forms.

This move does not affect laboratories at other SMH facilities. The labs at both MD Imaging and the SMH Regional Cancer Center are still open and accepting orders.

If you need further clarification about laboratory services, please contact the labs at the phone numbers listed below:

SAVE THE DATEWHAT: SMH Annual Awards Ceremony

WHERE: Northshore Harbor Center

WHEN: Friday, Dec. 7, 8 p.m. – Midnight The awards ceremony will begin at 8 p.m., followed by the band at 9 p.m. MORE DETAILS TO COME!

CONGRATULATIONS!Congratulations to Holly Goodman for obtaining certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) in both Abdomen and OB/GYN.

The week of April 9-13 was designated National Cancer Registrars Week in order to emphasize the foundation cancer registrars provide for cancer research, prevention and treatment.

Cancer registrars are data information specialists who collect and code patient-level data for cancer registries. The registries provide essential information to healthcare providers and health officials to better monitor and improve cancer treatment, conduct research and target cancer prevention and screening programs. Cancer registrars work in a variety of cancer treatment and research settings and manage a wide range of demographic and medical data on those with cancer.

If you haven’t already, please thank SMH’s cancer registrar, Thelma Draughter, for the fine work she does here!
