Principal’s Message

The end of this year marks two years at Beresford Road for me. It seems to have gone past in a flash but as a team we have achieved lots of things for our students and made changes around the school. During that time we have had two new Assistant Principals (Mrs Mangin & Mrs Leverett), a Learning and Support Teacher (Miss Rogerson), a School Administration Officer (Mrs Schubert), a librarian (Mrs Hamersma) and, of course, Paws – the school dog!

We have worked hard as a staff to improve curriculum and planning by establishing learning committees and developing a school plan & aims, completing ‘Focus on Reading’ training, introducing the L3 program into Kindergarten, trialing a Stage 1 safety net class, strengthening the Learning Support Team role, moving to the National Curriculum and forging links with Greystanes High School, Greystanes Public School and Girraween Public School as part of the Pemulwuy Learning Community.

We have continued to work hard to improve our participation in the performing arts by staging a wonderful school concert, Rewind, having dance lessons available to all, offering piano and guitar lessons at lunch, having gymnastics classes for all, having dance group and/or choir performances at the Opera House, Panthers & Riverside Theatre and adding a K-2 Xmas concert to the end of year celebrations.

We have built on the school’s technology resources by being one of the first ten schools to migrate to eT4L server, updat-ed over 70 computers to Windows 7, introduced the Sentral intranet system for class rolls, administration, student tracking and communication. We installed the remaining 6 Interactive Whiteboards needed to complete the school, purchased staff laptops, began our school wireless rollout, established a class set of ipads and moved to wireless mikes for the hall and K-2 quad.

We have tried to improve school communication through updates to school website (all school notes are uploaded), using Facebook for quick communication, the introduction of a daily morning assembly, a redesign of the school newsletter and student report card, new promotion materials and improved Kinder orientation and induction programs.

The school is also looking better with 4 completely painted Stage One rooms, painted front walls in all 4 kinder rooms, painted / carpeted walls in 4 other classes, painted K-2 toilets, painted 3-6 balconies and painted doors, toilets and the outside of administration building. The mural outside

the school administration area has also been a fantastic addition to the school, as has the new canteen windows, the new grassed area outside the hall and the established gardens around the school.

We have worked hard for the last two years to make Beresford Road the best it can be and we plan to continue to improve both the look of the school and the outcomes we achieve for our students. The word is out that Beresford Road is the place to be! We grew by 30 students this year and look to do the same for 2014. We now have weekly requests for out of area enrolments from students and families at other schools, unfortunately we are unable to help all these families as our local enrolments continue to grow.

Presentation Day

Presentation Day will be held next Tuesday at Greystanes High School. I would recommend that you are seated by 9.15 to secure your place. Class awards will be presented for each class, along with the major school academic and citizenship and the announcement of the new school captains.

Don’t forget the parent helpers’ morning tea on Monday 16th December at 11am. Hopefully if you have been a helper at school this year you will have received a note but it is easy to miss a couple with over 100 helpers for classes, carnivals and excursions. P & C

I would like to thank Annette Cachia as president of the P & C for all the wonderful work they have done this year. They are a small but dedicated group of parents who work hard to provide new resources and fun opportunities for your children. This year the P & C donated funds to the school to purchase a class set of ipads and to repair the playground equipment while organising mufti days, a movie night, election day BBQ and stalls for Mothers and Fathers Days.

2013 marks Annette’s last year of involvement with the school P &C. By asking around, she has been involved with the school and the P &C for somewhere between 25 and 200 years! As president, she has been the driving force behind many improvements for your children, including interactive whiteboards and ipads in the last two years. Annette has worked tirelessly for the school across three decades and will be missed by the staff and students at Beresford Road. I have appreciated her friendship and support as a new principal in a school. I wish every success and happiness as she moves forward.

Staffing 2014

Every year at schools there are changes to the teaching staff. Teachers take leave, some return from leave, there are promotions to new positions, changes in student numbers and department appointments. At this stage we are expecting limited changes; holding on to all our current teachers apart from Mrs Kimpton and Mrs Silva who are leaving to have babies.

We are also expecting a couple of old faces to return during the year, Mr Adams from the beginning of the year and Mrs Cukman during term two. Two new staff members will join us as temporary teachers from the beginning of the year; Mr Laidlaw and Miss Miller.

At this stage we are expecting to start the year with 460 students in 19 classes.

Merry Christmas, Have a safe and relaxing holiday

KA learnt about the different parts of a castle, including a moat, keep and a drawbridge. Stu-

dents then built their own castles out of recycled materials and a king and queen to go inside.

KA also read the Aboriginal Dreamtime stories: “How the

Kangaroos Got Their Tails”, “When the Snake Bites the Sun”,

“How the Birds Got Their Colours” and “The Rainbow Serpent”.
