ZONE ATHLETICS
This is a general reminder for those students who have been selected to represent Beresford Road at the Zone Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 27th August that you need to return their permission note along with their money to Mr Wicks by this coming Friday 23rd August, otherwise you will not be attending the carnival.
If you have been selected to compete in the 800m event you will need to make your own way to the track to compete in your race as IT will be starting at 8.30am.This may mean some car-pooling to make it easier for parents.
All of the other competitors will be transported to and from the track by bus – leaving at 9.00am and returning by 3.00pm.
Thanks
Jerome Wicks

Principal’s Message
It’s been a very busy start to the term with the concert and athletics carnival in Education Week before a quick transition into Book Week this week. Tomorrow is the end of our Book Week celebrations with our Book Character Parade from 11.30 in the K-2 quad. One character in each class will be selected for a book prize. We have combined the character parade with open classrooms and the opportunity to stay and share a picnic lunch with your children to try and better accommodate our working parents. Many parents have indicated that it is easier to have a single day’s leave rather than 2-3 hours on a couple of days in a short period of time. K-2 classes will welcome parents into the rooms from 9.15 to 10.15 while 3-6 classrooms will be open from 10.00-11.00. Tomorrow is also your last opportunity to purchase books at the book fair in the library. School Hours All students need to be at school before 8.55am each day. We have a school assembly at this time to share daily messages and then go straight to classrooms. As a class teacher, you want to get the day started as quickly as possible and having a student arrive at the door late, even a couple of minutes, affects the learning time of every student in that class. Needing to remark the roll, collect extra notes and money all takes time away from the class, especially if the parents then want to talk with the teacher. It is easy to think that a couple of minutes won’t affect anything but trying to settle 25 children and then having a knock at the door is extremely distracting – and in some cases, 3 or 4 students may be late and enter the class at different times causing 15 minutes of lost time. That time is the same as 2 lost reading lessons every week! As parents we need to be responsible for having our children at school every day ready to learn. This includes having all the necessary stationery, food for the day, a jumper if it is cold and to arrive before the start of the day at 8.55.
Helping your child with literacy and numeracy
Helping your child, ages 3-8
Here are some ideas while shopping:
On the way to the shops, play a memory game. Take turns adding to a list.
Say: I’m going shopping. I want to buy something starting with a /b/
sound. I’m going to buy a brush.
Your child says: I’m going to buy a brush and a book. You say: I’m going to buy a brush, a book and a banana… and so on.
Ask your child to find certain groceries, for example, Weetbix in the cereal sec- tion.
See how many groceries he/she can find that begins with the letter ‘w’.
Point out signs and labels and read them aloud. Explain what they mean.
Ask your child to count out the fruit. For example, you ask for three oranges, five red apples, one green apple and two
bananas. Say the fruit in your home language as well as in English.
Show the contents of a pack by pointing to the amount on it.
Talk about the position of a container when putting it somewhere. “This can is next to the fruit.” “Let’s put the cans
under the bread.”
Count how many steps it takes to go from the trolley to the wall. Can your child make up a song or a rhyme while
counting?
Play a guessing game for a rhyming word. Begin with easy clues and gradually make these more challenging.
Say: What word am I? I eat grass all day and I rhyme with ‘how’.
Helping your child in Years 3 or 4
Here are some ideas while shopping:
Make a shopping list with your child before going out.
Discuss ‘specials’ you might want to buy in brochures.
Read a street directory together before you drive to the shops and find the best way to avoid traffic lights.
On public transport, look for times and destinations. Count the number of stops to your destination.
Encourage your child to practise counting in your home language as well as in English.
Ask your child to estimate the weight of fruit and vegetables first and then use the scales to weigh them and check how
close he or she was.
Your child could check your shopping dockets for correct prices.
Give your child little problems to solve. For example, imagine that you are having five people to a barbeque. You want
to cook three sausages for each of them. How many sausages will you buy? What would you do if sausages only came in packs
of eight?
When watching television:
Discuss different types of programs that we see on television, such as, comedy, soap opera, musical, documentary,
drama, lifestyle and thriller. Discuss which ones are the preferred kinds in your family.
Watch advertisements and favourite shows together and discuss why you like them. Discuss some of the values and
moral codes seen.
Ask your child to create a chart and total the number of hours that each family member views television in a week and
discuss the findings.
Your child could time the advertising during a film or time the intervals between the advertisement breaks. Discuss
how this impacted on the program. You could also discuss how advertisements try to persuade you to buy or use a
product. Helping your child with literacy and numeracy in the middle years of schooling – Years 5 to 8:
Here are some ideas that you can use at home:
You could encourage your child to help with such things as:
• home or garden renovations
• calculating the cost of phone calls
• measuring out pet food
• building a kennel or home for a pet
• assembling Do-it-yourself items.

Stage 3 Camp
Department of Sport and Recreation Camp at Sydney Academy Narrabeen
This is just a reminder that the final payment instalments for the Stage 3 Camp at Narrabeen are fast approaching. The final two payment dates are:
Thursday 29th August
Wednesday 18th September (Final Payment)
Parents are reminded that payments can be made on any Monday, Wednesday or Thursday through the school office and that credit card payments will be gladly accept-ed.
Students were given a note on Friday last week, which had the final payment figure noted so that parents/guardians are aware of how much is still remaining to pay for the camp.

The Buzz- Issue 10 Term 3 - Week 6 Tuesday 20th August
You could ask your child to estimate the amount of water used when washing the car and how much it would cost. Would
car-washing facilities be cheaper?
Show how to create a budget & discuss how to maintain it.
Talk about jobs where it may be vital to be accurate with measurements or numbers, such as in plumbing and hairdressing.
Newspaper and magazine articles about sports, the weather, economics, cars and music often include graphs and tables. You
can use these to discuss how this information influences or informs the reader.
Do you show your electricity, water and phone bills to your child? These often include graphs. You could discuss how you
could reduce the quantities shown in the graphs.
Talk about words such as approximately, about, nearly. You could discuss why these words are used at different times.
When you’re driving somewhere, you could ask your child to use a map to find the place.
The child could also use the map scale to work out the distance to be travelled and
calculate the time it’ll take to get there.
You could encourage your child to help prepare a recipe that he or she really likes.
That will help with learning about accurate measuring. You could also ask your child to
help you work out the quantities needed when changing a recipe from four people to six people.
Thank you
David Leydon
If parents are having difficulties in keeping to the payment schedule can you please contact the school ASAP, so we can come to some sort of arrangement in regards to payment.
Medical Forms
Thank you to all the parents/guardians who have returned the completed medical forms. However, there are still some forms that are missing Medicare numbers and these numbers need to be entered on the form before we can submit them to the Dept. of Sport & Recreation.
So if your child has brought the form home this week can you please ensure the Medicare numbers are added to the form and return it to Mr Wicks ASAP!!!
There are also a few students who have still not returned their medical forms. Could these students please return these forms ASAP!!!
These forms are extremely important and necessary for us the teachers to ensure your child is well looked after whilst on the camp.
Thanks
