Brushes with Life at the Basilica By Kathy L.

On February 4th some members from Vail Place; Desi H, Michelle C., Kathy L., Sylvia H., Katherine M., Ubah O; went to the 4th annual Basilica Film Festival to attend the showing of “Brushes with Life: Art, Artists and Mental Illness” directed by Philip Brubaker and produced by Deir-dre Haj. The film features 8 artists who through their art and creativity have overcome some of the obstacles related to mental illness. This film was very inspirational and moving for me, the artists are living with severe mental health issues and their amazing art helps them navigate and function in the “normal” world. There’s a wedding in the near future for a couple who met through the art project and some of the art-ists have been doing quite well selling their artwork. “Brushes with Life” is a great example of how art and crea-tivity can help people with mental health issues live a hap-py and productive life.

Members and staff of the Hopkins and Minneapolis Clubhouses attended the NAMI Minnesota and the University of Minnesota’s Annual Research Dinner on Wednesday, February 24th. The night’s focus was on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation* as an intervention for individuals living with depression and schizophrenia. After checking in at the registration desk, members and staff of the Hopkins Clubhouse rushed to the front and grabbed a table with an excellent view of the presenters’ podium. We enjoyed a dinner of roasted chicken, fresh vege-tables, and a garden salad, and as we were finishing up our last bites of pieces of Dulce de Leche cake, the first pre-senter took the stage. All three presenters had spent the last several years conducting research around Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), and were excited to share their findings with the room. The first presenter, Suzanne Jasberg, educated the crowd about TMS, and spoke about it as an intervention for adults living with depression. The second presenter, Kathryn Cullen, spoke about TMS as an intervention in the child and adolescents living with depression population. Finally, the third presenter, Brent Nelson, spoke about TMS as an intervention in the adults living with schizophrenia population. The presenters found that, though they are in the infancy stages of their research, there may be great benefits to using TMS as an intervention for individuals living with depression and for individuals living with schizophrenia. The pre-senters promised to continue with their research and keep us in the loop as to their findings. We left the dinner full of chicken and intrigue, and our conversation buzzed around the night’s topic days after the dinner had ended. See you next year for the NAMI research dinner! Also, do not forget to mark your calendars for the NAMI Spring Ga-la on April 23rd and the Annual NAMI Walk on September 24th. YAY for research!!!! *Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a procedure in which a magnetic field generator is placed on the head in order to generate electric currents in specific parts of the brain.

Hopkins Staff and Members Were Asked: If You Were Kidnapped and Could Have the Cast of One Television Show come to your Rescue,

which Television Show Would You Choose?

After countless inspections, unexpected delays, some disappointment, and crazy weeks of unpacking, our much anticipat-ed Vail Place Remodel is finished: we are home. The redesigned floor plan, completely new kitchen, bright, sunny, busi-ness and communication department, and brand new snack bar are fantastic.

We’ve been in our new space for a couple of months, and as soon we moved in we started cooking Thanksgiving dinner in our new kitchen, which turned out to be pretty darn good even though none of us had ever used the new oven.

There have been some adjustments: getting used to the new entrance, using the updated technology, or actually getting twenty-first century technology and all the space in our brand spanking new kitchen...I’m just a little excited about the kitchen; we could have a party in there! All the changes have been difficult for some of us but change is a good thing; change is necessary to grow and move our Clubhouse into the future.

Now we must work together to make this our Clubhouse. There will be compromises, sacrifices, and much more debate on how to make this a truly splendid home for all of us, and I, for one, find the process of developing new ways to navi-gate our Work-Ordered Day, putting some excitement into our task boards, learning to work within the two departments, and finding fun ways to make this our Clubhouse exhilarating. I look forward to working with all of you in the coming new year to make this our Clubhouse, our home.
