Dear SJV Families

During October each year Catholic schools like SJV participate in awareness and

fundraising activities to support Catholic Mission. Catholic Mission is the official mission

aid agency of the Catholic Church. Catholic Mission continues the mission of Jesus

Christ in the world to share faith by caring for people in need.

World Mission month challenges us to assist the many people around our world who

are affected by poverty, war, conflict and sickness. Mission is an expression of God’s

love for us, and our love for others.

The funds raised from the P&F organised disco last Friday will be donated to Catholic

Mission. Information is included in this newsletter. More information on the work of

Catholic Mission is available at www.catholicmission.org.au

HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Tip for the Week: Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

Francis of Assisi

Swimming Program

The Swimming Program ‘kicked off ‘ this week, and from all reports, it has been very enjoyable and productive. Certainly the students have welcomed this opportunity to experience a physical activity in a water environment and have embraced the program with great enthusiasm.

The Year 3 students will have a ‘make up’ lesson in place of their scheduled 28th October classes due to a clash of events. This make up lesson is now scheduled for Tuesday 25th October. I ask that the Year 3 students now come prepared for swimming on the Tuesday of that week, rather than the Friday.

Queensland Cricket Clinics

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Queensland Cricket for conducting their clinics at the school this week during PE classes. The students have participated really well and had lots of fun. The students have been given the website if they are keen to get involved in an outside school program.

Thank you for your continued support of all things sport at SJV.

1:1 BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) PROGRAM YEAR 5, 2017

Coming Soon: SJV iPad Portal

The SJV iPad Portal is designed to assist families with students in Year 5 in 2017 to prepare and engage with their

ipad and the curriculum. A link to the information letter sent to Year 4, 2016 parents in June is available on the

Parent Portal under Announcements.

What a great start to school swimming 2016. The sun was shining and the pool temperature a beautiful 28 degrees.

On Tuesday, Years 1 and 2 showed us their various swimming abilities. They were then placed into their swimming groups and worked on their freestyle technique. They also learnt the importance of a safety entry and how to do it correctly.

Prep, Year 3,4, 5 & 6 are still to come on Friday, where they will be assessed and put into their swimming groups.

Next week, Prep to Year 4 will be concentrating on stroke development and Years 5 and 6 will be dabbling in the basics of water polo. They will then continue to develop those skills over the coming weeks. The following week, Prep to Year 4 will be participating in the Royal Life Saving’s Swim and Survival Program. They will then be assessed in week 4 on what they have learnt.

We have supplied the teachers with swimming caps for the chil-dren. The teachers have named each cap and will keep them at school until the last week of swimming when they will then be sent home with the children.

Happy Swimming!

75th Birthday School Disco

Thank you to all the many parent volunteers and staff who assisted us at last week’s student disco.

Your help was greatly appreciated and all the students had a fun time celebrating. We raised $422.70 with the gold coin entry for Catholic Mission.

2017 BOOK PACKS

2017 booklist information is now available on the school website:

http://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/About%20Our%20School/Pages/Uniform-and-Booklists.aspx

We will again be using our (preferred) local supplier S.O.S. School & Office Supplies.

Orders are to be made online via the S.O.S. website, using a secure payment facility, by

Sunday 30 October with delivery between 28 November and 4 December (Prep year level

only will be delivered directly to the school).

Parents of Prep 2017 students who choose not to order through S.O.S. are requested to deliver their booklist items in a named box/bag (not

individually named items) to the school office in the week commencing Monday 16 January 2017. Years 1-6 booklist items not ordered through

S.O.S. should be brought to school on the first day of Term 1 Tuesday 24 January 2017.

We would like to invite all SJV parents and friends to the P&F Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 25 October from 7pm in the Philomena

Building. At this meeting we will be electing office bearers for the 2017 Committee. I would like to thank our current committee for their amazing

effort in 2016. All committee positions will be declared open at the AGM, and we will have two definite vacancies for the roles of Secretary and

Treasurer. I would like to thank Leeanne Goodwin and Kim Challenor respectively, for their hard work and dedication to these roles, and their

support of all P&F endeavours over the last three years. We are grateful for your participation.

The P&F has been very successful in achieving its fundraising goal of 2016 - the air-conditioning of the Year 1 classrooms. Our fundraising goal

for 2017 will be supporting the school to complete the next stage of its playground renewal plan to further enhance the play space for our

children. At our last meeting we created a playground ‘working party’ to liaise with the school and school board representatives to examine

options for this next stage within the school’s playground master plan. You may view a copy of this plan at the school office. If you have any

suggestions regarding options or ideas for the playground, please forward these in writing to Rebecca Wright [email protected] before

October 31. We will take all suggestions into consideration as we work towards achieving this goal.

TUCKSHOP VOLUNTEERS 2017

The 2017 Tuckshop Volunteer Form is attached to the newsletter.

Any parents wishing to volunteer in the tuckshop in 2017 are asked

to complete the form and return to the school office asap.

UNIFORM SHOP

Parents of 2017 Prep students are asked to make an appointment

for a fitting due to the time constraints of the Uniform Shop trading

hours. Fitting times will be available at the Parent Information Night

next Tuesday 18 October.

Please note the preferred method of payment for uniform shop

purchases is EFTPOS or credit card, rather than cash.

TUCKSHOP

Tuckshop is presently available for first and second break on Mondays and Fridays. It is for this reason that I ask you to consider

volunteering your me to a tuckshop roster. The commitment is approximately once every 6 weeks from 8:45am to 11am. I

would like to see as many mothers, fathers and grandparents as possible to help run the tuckshop efficiently. It is a great way to

meet new Mums and Dads and the children love to see their parents and grandparents at the tuckshop. You are welcome to

nominate a friend with whom you would like to work with.

‘Workplace, Health and Safety’ regulaons make it necessary for ALL CHILDREN to be kept out of the tuckshop at all mes.

If you are a volunteer at another school tuckshop, please spulate what day you work (e.g. First Monday) and I will endeavour to

accommodate your needs. Please indicate below if you are interested in helping at our tuckshop and return the form as soon as

possible. Your tuckshop roster will be emailed to you during the second week of the 2017 school year.

Thank you for your support.

In line with the guidelines of the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian (CCYPCG) Act, all volunteers,

Parents or not, must be registered with the school and complete a ‘Student Protecon Training Session’. These sessions are run at

the school. Parents do not require a Posive Noce Blue Card. However, all non-parent volunteers (including grandparents) must

hold a current Posive Noce Blue Card for Volunteers. The volunteer cannot be engaged by the school un"l the Posi"ve No"ce

Blue Card is received.
