Dear Neighbours, Welcome to your October edition of ‘The Viewer’.

Autumn is in the air and it feels that the kids have just returned to school and half term is already looming. Don’t fret, I know it seems a mammoth task to keep them entertained, but we are here to help! We have included lots of activities and fun things to do, such as a visit to Pigeon Farm, they have lots of activities and events going on through-out October (page 13) or if you feel artistic, there’s a FREE Craft Demonstra-tion of stunning Christmas creations (page 55) and lots more on page 52.

There is a new Walking Group in Woodston. This is part of Peterborough’s ’Walking for Health Scheme organised by Vivacity - so if you enjoy walking , would like to explore the city’s nature and keep fit, see page 10 for details.

It’s that time again, The East of Eng-land Autumn Show is coming to town on 9th October. If you would like to win a family ticket and enjoy a great day out, please go to page 44 for details. But don’t delay you just have a few days. I will ensure to get the tickets to the winners by the 5th.

We now have a new monthly revamped beauty article (pages 34 & 35). I hope you find it informative and also, enjoy all our other articles. How-ever, if you have any suggestions, ideas or comments you would like to make about the magazine then please con-tact me, I will be happy to hear from you.

Paul Zerdin Is coming to the

Stamford Corn Exchange on Sunday 16th October with

W ith more than 3 million hits on You-Tube and guest appearances on Comedy Rocks and the Royal Variety

Performance, Paul Zerdin is, without doubt, one of the most talented ventriloquists in the world. Following 2 sold-out years at the pres-tigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Zerdin em-barked on his first UK tour in 2010 and this year sees him return to the live arena this Autumn, taking SPONGE FEST to previously uncharted venues.

”Pure audience gratifying magic” Time Out

With his fresh twist on this traditional comedy art, Paul Zerdin is constantly breaking new ground in his shows which seamlessly blur performance with reality. Zerdin uses his ventriloquism skills to such effect that his audience play an integral part in the show, working alongside his puppet characters – the

pre-pubescent, cheeky Sam, the belligerent OAP Albert and the precocious infant Baby. “Simply put, Zerdin is the man who can make ventriloquism look cool” The Stage

With his winning combination of charm, im-peccable comic timing and continual audience interaction there will not be a dry eye in the house.

Paul Zerdin always delivers a ‘set closer’ that involves some serious audience participa-tion!

“If you thought the words BRILLIANT and VENTRILOQUIST could not exist in the same sentence, go and see Paul Zerdin for some brutal re-education ....” Evening Standard

Walk With Us and your iPhone at

Woodston Ponds … A new free iPhone health walk app fea-

tures a route at the picturesque Woodston

Ponds.

You don’t need an iPhone to enjoy the walk as it is now a regular group walk led by a health walk leader.

Four pleasant walks through Peterbor-ough’s green spaces are now available as a free i-phone app which guides walk-ers along the routes. The app provides information about the walks and points of interest along the way. People can follow the guided route at their own pace and don’t have to worry about getting lost because they can see where they are and where to go next at every step of the way.

“The idea is to reach people who might not normally explore the city’s nature and encourage them to enjoy the green spaces on their doorstep. We hope the iPhone app will encourage people to switch off the TV and get outside instead.” Says Janine Starling of Peterborough Envi-ronment City Trust, the charity behind the app.

One of the walks is in Woodston. The 40-minute walk is around Woodston Ponds, previously used by British Sugar and now an important local nature re-serve. The route is also featured as a health walk attended by local people once a month.

Nicky McCready, Sports Development Officer helped develop the health walks app. “Walking at a brisk pace using the Walk Peterborough app will help people to get fit. It also links closely to the new ‘Walk With Us’ scheme in the city which encourages people to walk regularly in groups supervised by walk leaders.”

The Woodston Walk is led by Penny Fletcher every third Saturday of the month at 10am. It is a great way to get active and meet people who enjoy walking in your area. For more information, contact Penny Fletcher on 07748018773 or email [email protected].

AUTUMN LAWN CARE & AERATION Aerating (mechanically punching

thousands of holes in to the lawn) benefits the soil in the following ways:

• Loosens compacted soil and increases the availability of water and nutrients.

• Enhances oxygen levels in the soil, stimulating root growth and enhancing beneficial bacteria in the soil to multiply and feed the grass.

• Allows water to drain away from surface reducing the incidence of moss.

• The physical action of aerating severs roots and stimulates new roots to fill up the holes

• Increases drought tolerance and improves overall health.

Aeration is best carried out in the Autumn. It is advisable to over-seed and top dress

with sand: soil dressing if budget allows.

Reducing The Cost of

Preventative Pet Care

T here is often a preconception that Vets bills are very expensive, even if a visit is required simply for a pets annual vacci-

nation booster. But why is that, is it because vets are actually very expensive, is it be-cause we have free healthcare for humans and so have nothing to reference the cost of pet care against or is it because a trip to the vets always results in a lump sum need-ing to be paid in one go? Most of us pay for the things we know we will need throughout the year in small monthly payments, things like insurance, utilities and taxes. So why not apply this to the cost of preventative care for your pet? This is exactly what some Vets are now doing by offering their customers the option to pay a set amount by direct debit every month, that covers the cost of their pet/s basic pre-ventative care for a whole year. So what is a years worth of preventative care? This will differ dependant on the spe-cies of your pet, however once your pet has had it’s initial vaccination course the below is a guide to what your Vet will normally rec-ommend for basis preventative care. Cats

- Preventative flea treatment given monthly - Worming treatment given every 3 months - Vaccine booster against Flu, Enteritis and Leu kaemia every year Dogs

- Preventative flea treatment given monthly - Worming treatment given every 3 months - Vaccine booster against Distemper, Ca-nine Hepatitis, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Pa-rainfluenza and Leptospirosis every year

Rabbits

- Worming treatment given every 3 months - Vaccine booster against Viral Haemor-rhagic Disease every 6 months - Vaccine booster against Myxomatosis every year

Preventative care schemes vary in what they offer and what they cost, they will also usually be reflective of not just species but of the size of the breed. Some also have added benefits such as discounts off non-preventative treatments and products, like a loyalty bonus for signing up to monthly pay-ments, which can be of great benefit if your pet has an ongoing condition.

So why not see what your local practice is doing and make vets bills that little bit less scary.

What Mum Always Said

I had jumped in the bath; I was lying in repose,

When I noticed a spot on the end of my nose,

It was big, it was shiny, so bulbous and red,

And it didn’t comply with what Mum always said,

She said “When you’re older, your spots disappear,

You’ll be left with a skin that’s so perfectly clear”,

But I’m now forty eight so that’s clearly not true,

As the spot on my nose is now spoiling my view,

I’m feeling concerned as this seems to suggest

That Mum got it wrong and she doesn’t Know Best

‘Cos if she was right, in the things that she said

Then why have I spots growing out of my head?

Italian Festival

came to town!

On the 11th September, hundreds of

visitors came to the Cathedral Square for

the 3rd Italian festival our city has hosted.

This year, people were treated to the

delights of authentic Italian culinary such

as salami, wine, cheese and olive oil that Italy has to offer. Bringing a real taste of

Italy to Peterborough’s Cathedral Square.

There were also live displays of wine-

making, pasta-making and a demonstra-

tion of the fine art of mozzarella-making

and not to mention home-made pizza.

There was also a display of classic Italian cars around the centre while singers Don

Grassi and Sav Russo serenaded the crowd

with traditional Italian songs on stage in

front of the Guildhall.

But the main event of the day, was the

special guest appearance of TV chef;

Antonio Carluccio.

With a heart

warming and excitable en-

trance, Carluccio

charmed the

audience with a

half an hour chat

about the Italian

community and the delightful Italian cui-

sine, followed by signing of his new book.

Carluccio got more than he bargained for when an admiring fan got close enough to

plant a kiss straight on the lips, much to the

excitement of the crowd!

Overall, the day was a huge success

with the sun shining all day and many

visitors to support such a lovely event. It

really showed the great spirit of all the

community and how people from another country can integrate into our community

but retain their own identity.

Looking forward to next year!

Renault Koleos You only have to look over the fence to sister firm Nissan to see that crossovers can be successful – try and order a Qashqai or Juke now and you’ll be looking at a rather long wait. So it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why the Renault Koleos flopped. Renault launched it in 2008 and by 2010 it had been axed, selling just 2,890. The Qashqai, by comparison, sold 9,253 models in March alone.

Nissan Cube The Cube has been a cult hit for years with unofficial imports snapped up by style conscious

buyers keen for something unique. So when Nissan decided to bring the latest model to the UK officially in 2009, it was sure it had a hit on its hands. Unfortunately, the maker gave it little publicity, it was expensive and soon became too costly to import from Japan. 1,000 were sold which Nissan says was ‘over its estimate’. We don’t believe them.

Citroen C6 We all know that large French saloons haven’t been the most popular cars in Britain. Despite this, Citroen launched the C6 in 2006 with phrases like ‘free-thinking’, ‘svelte’, and ‘unmistakable’ in its marketing bumpf. From its launch to the end of 2010, Citroen sold just 889 units – the E60 BMW 5 Series sold ten times as many in the same period. But Citroen always said it had expectations the C6 would find homes ‘in the hundreds, rather than thousands’.

Chrysler Sebring Chrysler had its eye on entering the D-segment back in 2007 – and thought the Sebring was the answer. It wasn’t. The press packs said it combined ‘striking design with interior craftsmanship’ with ‘great performance’ thrown in for good measure. The public disagreed and bought only 2,652 of them before it slipped off the price lists in 2009. In the same period, Ford sold 126,368 units of the Mondeo.

Subaru Tribeca Like Renault, Subaru believed it needed an SUV in its range. So, in 2006, along came the Tribeca. Intended to offer a

‘practical SUV with great handling and a sporty drive’ it failed to find buyers. A face-lift in 2008 did nothing to improve sales and it bowed out that year with just 750 sold. In contrast, the Volvo XC90 – a car Subaru was competing with – sold 11,897 units in the same three years.

Toyota Urban Cruiser The Toyota Urban Cruiser went on sale in May 2009. Designed to meet a ‘growing demand for vehicles that are cut out for life on urban roads’ it didn’t do the job. Sales at the end of 2010 were 3,017 – the maker had planed to shift 2,000 units a year.

Quiet disasters

Motors

CAR makers. Give them their due, they normally produce some rather good motors. But occasionally – very occasionally – disasters that should have remained in the design studio slip through the net. Here we take a look at the top of the flops.

Chrysler Crossfire Launched with great fanfare in 2003, the Crossfire was Chrysler’s sports car

for the masses. Based on the first-generation Mercedes SLK, it came in coupe and convertible forms with retro American styling. However, only 4,544 units were sold in five years, and the Crossfire quietly died in 2008. In contrast the SLK sold 4,362 units in 2004 alone.

Vauxhall Signum More than just a cut-down Vectra, the Signum was intended to offer the executive experience in an otherwise humdrum Vauxhall and arrived in 2003. But almost five years to the day, Vauxhall called time on the Signum, axing it with just 17,344 sales to its name. This was ‘on target’ according to the firm but industry experts say it was well off what was originally planned.

Ford Cougar Along with the Focus, the Cougar was one of the cars that demonstrated Ford’s ‘new edge’ look in

the late 90s. Available with the Mondeo’s 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines, the Cougar was loved by the press. Sadly, the public wasn’t convinced – the lack of a prestige badge meant sales totaled 13,958 in four years. In contrast, the BMW 3 Series Coupe sold 44,420 between ’98 and ’02, showing a badge makes all the difference.

Mercedes-Benz R-Class Billed as a car that combined ‘an SUV, sports saloon, and luxury estate car’ into one package, the Mercedes R-Class arrived in 2005 hoping to carve a niche of its own. It was such a niche that few Brits bought it, and even a makeover in 2010 did little to improve the 3,433 sales clocked up so far. Mercedes says those numbers are ‘in-line with expectations’, but we’re not so sure about that…

Milk on the Menu at new

Baby Café in Stanground

C ake joined milk on the menu at Peterbor-ough’s new Baby Café Local launch in Stanground. The Baby Café model pro-

vides a relaxed environment for mothers and their families where they can chat and learn about breastfeeding from qualified practitioners and each other. Mothers in Stanground are so welcoming of the support that many baked cakes to share at the launch.

Opening the Baby Café, which runs every Tuesday 1.30 - 3pm at Stanground Children’s Centre, was Janet Dullaghan, Assistant Director for Children’s Community Health, at Peterbor-ough City Council, who recognises the need for the service to be available locally. Stanground Baby Café facilitator, Trina Warman, says; “As a local NCT breastfeeding counsellor for 10 years, I know how invaluable mothers find being able to get together in a relaxed setting with support available."

Local NCT breastfeeding counsellors, with help from breastfeeding peer supporters, will provide essential support for mothers in the early months of life with a new baby. This has been facilitated by the merger of The Baby Café Charitable Trust and NCT - the UK’s largest parent’s charity - to help even more mums who want to breastfeed. The Baby Café breastfeed-ing drop-ins will join the wide range of NCT ser-vices to help parents in every corner of the UK.

The new addition to the Baby Café and NCT service range differs from the original Baby Café drop-in model as it will not always require an NHS employee to run sessions. Breastfeeding counsellors will be able to host sessions with funding from local health, education and chil-dren’s services providing an essential support service to mothers without the need to call on stretched staff in maternity and children’s ser-vices. Baby Café Local is a lower cost solution to providing high quality support and information – meeting the needs of local mothers and the aims of local services.

T he Autumn Show is returning to the East of England Showground on Sunday 9th October 2011. The

event, with its mix of fur and feather, is the perfect family day out. Organised by the East of England Agricul-tural Society, visitors to the show can expect to see thousands of animals of all shapes and sizes, from small livestock exhibits includ-ing mice and fancy rats to special displays of rare and endangered livestock breeds. There are also competitive classes for native British breeds of sheep and pigs. Returning for its third year, the East of Eng-land Giant Vegetable Competition will show the fruits of a season of hard work by the region’s vegetable growers. We are pleased to announce the Supreme London Championship Small Livestock Show will be joining the East of England Autumn Show in 2011. The event caters for exhibition rabbits, cavies, rats, mice and hamsters. The London is one of the UK’s premier five star championship events for small livestock.

There will be many displays of traditional country life, including country crafts, as well as large animal exhibits. Magnificent Shire horses, incorporated as part of the Wisbech Shire Horse Show, will be dressed in their tra-ditional glory. There will also be the chance

to see Pony Club show jumping competi-tions, donkey driving and harness goats.

For those who prefer their animals with a bark, there will be plenty of dog displays and classes including ‘Scruffts’ (the Kennel Club’s search for the crossbreed of the year), Dog Agility competitions, and Terrier and Lurcher championships. There will be an exhibition of poultry and waterfowl featuring all major breeds. Birds will also be represented by pigeons. Discover the ideal opportunity to make an early start on some Christmas shopping with a wide variety almost over 100 trade stands to choose from, alongside a Craft Fair show-casing creative designs and a Food Hall of-fering the very best in regional food and drink. Crossed Keys By Greg Lyons

A new half-hour play from Eastern Angles Theatre

Company.

T he streets of Peterborough are paved with stories. Like any historic city there are tales of love,

laughter, conflict and loss. In Crossed Keys Peterborough play-wright Greg Lyons brings us bang up to date with story straight from the street.

Michael is down on his luck. Hussein and Shahruk would be on cloud nine if it weren't for her family. When the nostalgic ramblings of the old Irishman and the anxieties of the young married couple collide the three characters are united by a simple pattern in the block paving. This brand new piece of drama from one of the region’s top touring theatre companies will be popping-up in venues all over Peterborough from Wednesday 28th September. Venues include The Brewery Tap, Peterborough Cathedral and St Botolph’s Barn.

LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 It’s your birthday month and with four planets in your sign you’re bound to have a very special time. Venus, your

ruler, insists that you make the most out of your appearance as attracting new friends and rela-tionships are highly favoured. Energetic Mars in your career sector shows that goals and ambi-tions can be tackled creatively and successfully.

SCORPIO OCT. 24 - NOV. 22 Volatile energy for Scorpios this month as dynamic Mars is in challenging aspect to your Sun. This energy creates tension and could cause difficulties in relation-

ships. The best way to succeed is to try to see things from other people’s perspective. The new moon in your sign on the 26th, heralds the start of a new and positive cycle.

SAGITTARIUS NOV. 23 - DEC. 21 Dynamic Mars is in positive aspect to your Sun all this month. The action planet gives an increased sense of energy levels and self confidence. This is a most fa-

vourable time to reach for your goals and achieve your desires. Your social life is also high on the agenda as harmonious Venus assures new and exciting friendships.

CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 Romance and high ambitions are both favoured this month. Mighty Jupiter re-sides in the love and creativity sector of your chart and four planets in harmonious

Libra illuminate your career goals. This positive energy energizes all communications and interac-tions with others.

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18 Dynamic Mars is in your opposite sign all month, this tense energy presents a chal-lenge you have to overcome in order to achieve a certain goal. Challenges will

come your way, but with an abundance of harmoni-ous Libran influence also available, you should find a positive way to win through.

PISCES FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20 How you carry out your work and the harnessing of your resources are in the spotlight this month. Pisces now has a wonderful opportunity to use the four

planet line-up in balanced Libra. You will find innova-tive and creative ways to reorganise those areas that are not as they should be.

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 October is a most favourable time to achieve your desires and to reach your goals. Energetic Mars makes wonderful aspects to your Sun all month and

initiating new projects should be high on your agenda. You know what you want and have the extra energy to go after it.

TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 Venus is in your opposite sign during October. The planet of love and money should increase activity in the relation-ship department. Abundant and expan-

sive Jupiter in your sign all year means that a lack of discipline and overindulgence are other things to be mindful of at the moment.

GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 Energetic Mars is in the communication area of your chart and this vibrant en-ergy means that October is an ideal time to push ahead in business or at

work to climb up the ladder. You can really take the initiative now and start projects with a high probability of success.

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 With four planets in balanced Libra this month, the focus is on your home and family life. You’ll feel the need to ques-tion things that aren’t working and find solutions for a more balanced outcome.

With energetic Mars in your financial sector, money matters are also emphasised.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 Motivational Mars is in your sign all this month giving you a strong urge to get what you want. You are also much more self assertive than usual and you

need to channel this highly creative energy con-structively to avoid disagreements with others. The new moon in Libra on the 26th is favourable for new friends and relationships.

VIRGO AUG. 24 - SEPT. 22 Four planets occupy the financial sec-tor of your chart this month and money matters are high on the agenda. The Sun and Venus in beauty seeking Li-bra, guarantee a strong need for high

quality goods. Normally careful Virgoans could enjoy a shopping spree. If the money’s there - spend it!
