A ll-School Test Day has been

scheduled for Tuesday, April 10.

Students will be dismissed at 1:20

p.m.

• SENIORS — Grade 12 students do

not test or attend school on this day.

This is a good opportunity for stu-

dents to spend the day working on

scholarship applications (see some op-

tions at hffoundation.org), visiting

nearby colleges, studying, or prepar-

ing for next year’s transition to college

or other post-secondary plans.

• FRESHMEN, SOPHOMORES &

JUNIORS — Freshmen will take the

PSAT 8/9, sophomores the PSAT 10,

and juniors the SAT. These exams con-

sist of tests in Reading, Math, and

Writing & Language. The math test

has two sections: one that permits a

calculator and one that does not. The

SAT taken by juniors is an official

exam, and the scores are accepted by

colleges and universities for admis-

sion and scholarships.

Students are reminded to get a good

night’s sleep, to eat a healthy break-

fast and to bring their student ID, sev-

eral No. 2 pencils and a calculator. It is

important that every student perform

his/her best to provide the most accu-

rate picture of their academic achieve-

ment and growth. This helps H-F

better customize their educational ex-

perience.

Many resources are available for

students, both before and after the

exams. In January, parents received a

letter containing their student’s Col-

lege Board access code from fall test-

ing. The access code is used to

establish an account with the College

Board, which allows students to view

their test results, register for retests,

access information about college ap-

plications and more. Additionally,

these accounts can be linked to Khan

Academy (www.khanacademy.org),

which provides free customized test

prep that adjusts as students learn. In-

structions on how to establish a Col-

lege Board and Khan Academy

account were included with the codes.

In May, updated access codes will be

sent, and your student will use these

to link their April test scores with their

College Board account.

For questions about All-School Test

Day, please contact the Assessment

Department at 708-335-5585.

Spr ing All-School Test Day: Apr il 10

SAT Tips from the College Board• Don't leave anything blank. "There isno penalty for guessing, so if you don’tknow an answer, go ahead and guess.”• Use process of elimination. “Crossingout choices really helps when you getthat feeling that you might need to guess.Every time you confidently eliminate anoption, your chance of selecting the cor-rect answer out of the remaining optionsis higher. Even if you have no idea how toanswer a question, try to eliminate anyobviously wrong choices – then guessfrom the remaining ones.”• Cover up the choices. "I always try tocome up with an answer on my own be-fore I even look at the choices. This helpsme make sure that I don’t get distractedby choices that look good before I have achance to figure it out myself.”• Pace yourself. “It can be hard to getthrough each section in the limited timethat you have, much less get the right an-swers and double check! Skip questionsthat are going to take longer and comeback to them if you have time. Don'tspend more than 1.5 minutes on anyquestion on your first pass through.”• Trust yourself. “When I was takingpractice tests, I had no problem gettingthe sections done in time, but then I’dspend the extra minutes reviewing andsecond-guessing my first answers. I foundI often would switch from the right an-swer to a wrong one just because Idoubted myself!"• Bubble in batches. “I use a system thathelps me avoid accidentally bubbling inthe wrong answers. I complete five ques-tions (circling my answer choices on thetest itself), and then I bubble the answersin on the answer sheet. I think it alsosaves time. It’s inefficient to bubble in an-swers after every question - think of allthat hand movement! But don't wait untilthe end of the test to bubble in every-thing, or you might panic – or even runout of time before you have a chance toenter all your answers!”• Use any extra time wisely. "If you findyourself with extra time at the end of asection, make good use of it. No, it isn'tfun to re-read all of those questions, butyou’ll be so glad if you catch any mis-takes. The same goes for the answer grid- make sure your answer choices are inthe right bubbles!”

fromthe

College

Board

• Don't

leaveanything

blank."There is

no penalty for guessing, so if you don’tknow

an answer, go ahead and guess.”

•Useprocess

ofelim

ination.“Crossing

out choices really helps when you get

that feeling that you might need to guess.

Every tim

e you confidently elim

inate anoption, your chance of selecting the cor-rect answ

er out of the remaining options

is higher. Even if you have no idea how

toansw

er a question, try to eliminate any

obviously wrong choices – then guess

from the rem

aining ones.”•Cover

upthe

choices."I always try to

come up w

ith an answer on m

y own be-

fore I even look at the choices. This helps

me m

ake sure that I don’t get distractedby choices that look good before I have achance to fi

gure it out myself.”

•Pace

yourself.“It can be hard to getthrough each section in the lim

ited time

that you have, much less get the right an-

swers and double check! S

kip questionsthat are going to take longer and com

eback to them

if you have time. D

on'tspend m

ore than 1.5 minutes on any

question on your first pass through.”

•Trust

yourself.“When I w

as takingpractice tests, I had no problem

gettingthe sections done in tim

e, but then I’dspend the extra m

inutes reviewing and

second-guessing my fi

rst answers. I found

I often would sw

itch from the right an-

swer to a w

rong one just because Idoubted m

yself!"•Bubble

inbatches.“I use a system

thathelps m

e avoid accidentally bubbling inthe w

rong answers. I com

plete five ques-

tions (circling my answ

er choices on thetest itself), and then I bubble the answ

ersin on the answ

er sheet. I think it alsosaves tim

e. It’s inefficient to bubble in an-

swers after every question - think of all

that hand movem

ent! But don't w

ait untilthe end of the test to bubble in every-thing, or you m

ight panic – or even runout of tim

e before you have a chance toenter all your answ

ers!”•Useany

extratim

ewisely."If you fi

ndyourself w

ith extra time at the end of a

section, make good use of it. N

o, it isn'tfun to re-read all of those questions, butyou’ll be so glad if you catch any m

is-takes. T

he same goes for the answ

er grid-

make sure your answ

er choices are inthe right bubbles!”
