PRESIDENT’S LETTER February 2018
Happy Valentine’s Day!What happened to January? It just passed us by! Didn’t we just celebrate Christmas? Have you kept your New Year’s Resolutions? I haven’t.
I would like to say THANK YOU to Penny and Chris and their volunteers for enabling all of us and our visitors to enjoy their service, seven days a week in the Cafe. Your Chocolate Chip Cookies are enjoyed by all,
especially those waiting in the Emergency Waiting Room.
As we all know, our hospital has been busy, especially this time of year, as they say, “Bursting at the Seams,” I want to say thank you to each and everyone of you. You are truly appreciated by the nurses, techs and patients! Keep up the good work. Let’s not forget our Golf Cart Drivers’s who drive in all types of weather, especially these last few weeks . “Baby It’s Been Cold Outside!”
Just a reminder that we will be starting our In-Service meetings. If you need a time or a reminder, just go to the Day Captain’s Office and the times and dates are on the Bulletin Board. If you have any changes, please call Mike at the Auxiliary Office -- ext. #8061.
I guess that’s all for now. Have a good month and stay warm. Again, thank you for all you do!
Thanks for giving a “hoot” and for the time you share.
You make a difference with your compassion and care.
We reach new heights because of people like you.
You’re appreciated for “owl” the things you do!

When The Joint Commission Surveyors are onsite, do you know what to do?Make sure that your department or area looks clean and de-cluttered. Prepare to display pride for the part that you play in providing an excellent patient and family experience. You should expect the surveyors to speak with you about your role. The surveyors are very respectful and are eager to learn about our hospital and the care we provide. If you are approached by a surveyor, here are some helpful tips:
❧ Listen and stay calm
❧ Think carefully before answering a question
❧ Only answer the question asked by the surveyor, no need to elaborate
❧ If you don’t understand a question, ask for clarification
❧ If you don’t know the answer, explain to the surveyor how you would find the answer
❧ Show enthusiasm and interest
❧ Be able to describe process improvements in your department or quality initiatives
❧ Know the standards as well as policies and procedures that pertain to your work

Happy Valentine’s Day
VOLUNTEERS ARE LOVE IN ACTION

Flu Shots The flu season is definitely upon us
and I hope you all have had your flu shots and are diligent in washing your hands. The hospital has been very busy the past couple of weeks. If you haven’t gotten your flu shot you must wear a mask. And we will be monitoring badges to make certain we are all in compliance. Congratulations George and Gloria Counselman and Mike Kauffman have attained 4,000 hours; Mary Dolph, Jan Kumpan and William Van Riper have reached 3,000 hours of service! That’s quite an accomplishment. There are several other volunteers who have even more hours and I am so grateful to all of them and each of you even if you only have 50 hours at this time.
Auxiliary HoursSpeaking of hours of service, the Auxiliary members provided 167,762 hours of service during 2017. This is a fantastic number. In the past we have talked about reaching 1,000 volunteers but our goal is to fill all open positions and increase our annual hours to 200,000 in the next two years. So, I’m stressing hours of service. Two hundred thousand hours is quite a stretch but doable, I think. We exceeded 2016 by 15% and if we can do that over the next two years we will be over 200,000 hours.
Foundation NewsAt the Foundation there is lots of activity getting ready for the Gala. The Gala is on February 10 at the Savannah Center and we expect 400 guests for the black-tie event. This is the major fundraiser
of the Foundation and each year it exceeds our expectations. And I’m certain this year will not be different. If you would like more information on the Gala, please call 751-8871.
Being Better!Over the next year Jeannie Rogale and I will be any visiting other volunteer programs looking for best practices applicable to volunteers in a hospital. We are interested in making our volunteer program the best it can be and one that others will want to emulate. Stay tuned for more news.
Hospital RequirementsA lot of time is being spent getting our volunteers up-to-date with the requirements of the hospital and its regulations. If you are gone more than 6 months, you will need to complete the process before coming back to work. I realize this can be inconvenient for you, so we are handling these on an individual basis to make it as simple as possible. Hospitals are different than some other organizations in that the hospital is heavily regulated regarding quality and service. Volunteering at the hospital has certain requirements that we must meet. Your understanding and cooperation is very much appreciated if you are one who has to sign more papers and take more tests. We don’t want to lose any of you!
Thank YouJust saying “Thank You” doesn’t seem enough but it is from the heart and please know that you are appreciated not only by us, but the hospital staff, the patients and their families.

Our Millie retired after serving as the ER receptionist for many years. We, Penny, Sue and Cori, ER volunteers on Saturday’s 12-4 made her last day very special! We will all miss her very much!
~~Submitted by Penny Stinton
Millie Strauss sat quietly in the hospital lobby, dressed in her Auxiliary Uniform adorned by a ribbon holding several Award Pins, and holding other volunteer awards and pins in her hands. I am proud of my time here in The Villages Hospital. Volunteering is extremely important to me. I will miss all of this, but it is time for me to retire.”
Millie’s Lifetime Volunteer Avocation spans fifty-five years. “I first volunteered in 1963, when my son started school, and I promised myself that I would volunteer until my 90th birthday.”
Since joining TVRH Auxiliary in 2003, Millie has devoted all of her volunteer time to the Emergency Room and ED Admit. “I have been working with the best people, and I am proud to be part of such a wonderful team.”
Millie grew up in the Foster Care system of Rochester, NY, after the death of her parents.
“That is when I knew I would be a volunteer, that I would find a way to help others and give back.”
Married to Charles Strauss for 35 years, Millie is the proud mother of one son, Wayne. “Charles had a plan for us: a home in Florida as well as New York, and the assurance that no one would ever take my home from me. After he died I moved to Homestead, Florida, and…Hurricane Andrew blew down my house! I rebuilt the house, eventually moved to Central Florida, and joined the TVRH Auxiliary,”said Millie.
When asked if she has a “Wish” for her hospital
colleagues, Millie replied “Keep improving, welcome and respect each other, and, most important: take care of each other”. Thank you, Millie. ~~Pat Kronk, Hummingbird Writer

MILLIE STRAUSS ... Thank you for your Service!
AUXILIARY PRAYER
Almighty God and Heavenly Father, bless our endeavors as we strive to bring comfort and hope to all who are in distress of mind or body.
Guide us so that we may use the privilege given us to help the aged, the ill and the very young -- and with gentleness.
Give us the strength to labor diligently, and the courage to think and to speak with clarity and conviction but without prejudice or pride.
Grant us both wisdom and humility, directing our united efforts to do for others only as You would have us do.
Amen

AUXILIARY PLEDGE Believing that the hospital has real need for my service as a volunteer worker:
I will be punctual and conscientious in the fulfilment of my duties and accept supervision graciously.
I will consider as confidential all information which I may hear directly or indirectly concerning a patient, doctor or any personnel, and will not seek information in regard to a patient.
I will take any problems, criticisms or suggestions to my department chairperson.
I will endeavor to make my work of the highest quality.
I will uphold the traditions and standards of this hospital and will interpret them to the community at large.

Acknowledges the Patient and/or Visitor:• Follow the 10 – 5 rule: at 10 feet smile and acknowledge and at 5 feet speak. • Smile, make eye contact and greet them in a pleasant manner ...If they look confused or they are looking for something, ask if there is anything you can do for them. • Anytime you see someone looking for a sign that means they are probably looking for something and could use some help. • NEVER ask “How Do You Feel”, you know they are sick or nervous because they are in the hospital. Introduce Yourself • Depending on the situation and the place you are in ... State your name and your role at TVRH. • Highlight skills and expertise of self and other healthcare team members. Duration • Depending on the situation and the place you are in ... Give the Patient/Visitor a time expectation, even if it is just a time for your return. Keep patient/ visitor informed as to the amount of time a procedure or process will take. • If you don’t know the procedure/ process time see if you can find out. Never guess, ask someone in the know. • If there is a wait time give them the time expectation of that wait.
EExplanation
• Depending on the situation and place you are in ...Keep patient/visitor informed by explaining process & procedures. • Assist patient/visitor to have a clear expectation of what will be occurring. • Get correct information from the proper person.
T Thank You
• Thank the patient/ visitor for choosing TVRH. • Express appreciation that they have chosen TVRH as their healthcare facility. • Ask if there is anything else you can do for the patient/visitor before ending the interaction.

ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS of the tickets donated by a sponsor to the Gala on February 10. Each year a sponsor donates a table back to the Auxiliary for volunteers to attend. During 2017, Lou kept track of all volunteers who worked a special project such as March of Dimes, mock OR event, Biometrics, the parade, etc. We placed a ticket for each shift they worked throughout the year in a basket and Dick Campbell drew out the winners. Anyone can attend the Gala. But, the tickets are $150 each, so this is a value of $300 for these volunteers. Besides helping with our fundraisers, this is an added perk for working special events. We will doing this again next year.
Those who will be attending the Gala are:
Donna Davis Candy Ginns Maria Sandstrom Olga Rigg (THE HUMMINGBIRD IS hoping the winners will submit some pictures of themselves at the Gala, along with something fun about their experience!)

Alice Dickman has been a volunteer since 2012, initially working in Patient Care. She advanced quickly to Co-Chair with Jim Lemon. Over the ensuing years Alice assumed additional Chair responsibilities for Infusion, Express Admit and, finally, Surgical Waiting Room. Sadly, Alice experienced serious health issues and needed rest and recuperation time, which required her to resign from the Auxiliary. “I hope to come back in some capacity. The Hospital is my lifesaver…I love it…and I need it!”
Harriet Huschart, a member of TVRH Auxiliary since 2002, started out in Emergency Department and ED Admit, and stayed there for fifteen years. She assumed ED Chair responsibilities many years ago, and maintained a deep commitment to her department and her colleagues. In 2017, she also served as Chair of Pharmacy. Due to her husband’s myriad health and recovery issues, Harriet felt she was needed at home, and that it was time to resign from the Auxiliary. She is
also hoping to return to the Auxiliary in the near future.
Both Alice and Harriet were invited to the January 2018 Executive Committee meeting, and we surprised them with a “We Wish You Well” cake…and, of course, are looking forward to their return to the Auxiliary.

What Do YOU Think?
Getting to Know Us
Pat Kronk has been thinking about having a large book/
notebook about our Musicians, but the idea
could, and probably should, apply to ALL OF OUR
VOLUNTEERS.
If desired, each volunteer could write up a bio/story.
We all have stories that reflect our past and highlight
how we got here and why volunteering in TVRH is so special and important to the
volunteer.
No address or phone, but an ID pic could work. One page
only. A “Getting To Know You” / “Getting to know Us”
book.
Every day I realize how special each volunteer is as an individual, and I wish I could
hear more of their stories. The Humingbird articles are not just everyday events, but highlights of people, events, and significant moments in
time.
Just an idea. Do you think it has merit?
If you want to share, please send your article
