YE OLDE THRIFT SHOPPE CELEBRATION

This year it was decided that the volunteers from Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe should have their own Awards Luncheon. This was a trial for separating out larger departments to make room for more of our 900 volunteers to attend a luncheon. Over 165 people attended the event on Thursday, March 15th at Katie Belle’s in Spanish Springs.

Prior to the meal, Hershal Chapman played the guitar while historic photos from the Shoppe were rolling on the screen.

& Site Administrator both spoke about how

important the volunteers are to the success of our hospital. Dick Campbell, President of TVRH Auxiliary Foundation showed a video of the new digital surgical suite being installed and asked everyone to share this video with other groups.

Lou Emmert, Volunteer Coordinator for TVRH served as master of ceremonies and introduced the Foundation Board members, incoming Auxiliary Officers, and Thrift Shoppe Steering Committee. She then turned the program over to David Gardner, Foundation Board Chairman who presented the awards with the assistance of Jeannie Rogale, Auxiliary President and Karen Harkins. (see winners on page 4).

Lou also introduced Kate Peak, who is being made an Honorary Member this year and Jeannie Rogale made the closing remarks.

The food was fabulous, as were the cakes and everyone seems to enjoy having our own “special”

luncheon.

Dear Volunteers,

Can you believe, on March 20th we celebrated the “First Day of Spring” with cold windy weather? It actually felt like Fall.

I feel sorry for all our friends and relatives who came to sunny Florida for some warm weather Maybe next year it will be better.

Hopefully, all of you have attended your In-Service Meetings. This is a meeting we should all attend, it gives us an opportunity to meet our new volunteers who have joined us and also to hear how we can improve our work area. It gives us a chanch to hear what is new in the Hospital.

Since November 27th, as President, I have been busy with Lou Emmert, Volunteer Coordinator, going to meetings and visiting different hospitals to get insight on how other Volunteer programs work. I know that everything I am doing is truly a learning experience.

This month, April 12, at the Appreciation Luncheon, I, along with other officers will be installed for another two year term.

On March 16, I had the pleasure to attend the first Appreciation Luncheon for Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe. The luncheon was held at Katie Belles. Many awards were given out, the food was delicious, and the service was great. I am sure it was enjoyed by all.

First of Two Appreciation LuncheonsOn March 15 we held an appreciation luncheon for the YOTS volunteers at Katie Belles. This was a trial to see how separate luncheons would work. I think the luncheon went extremely well and we have received many compliments on how much it was enjoyed. And now I’m looking forward to the next appreciation luncheon for all other volunteers on April 12 at the Savannah Center. All volunteers, with the exception of YOTS,

should stop by the Day Captain’s office and sign up for the next luncheon.

Our MissionOur mission as the Auxiliary Foundation is to support our hospital in service, fund-raising and our positive support to the community. Our hospital has so many reasons to be proud of its quality of service, its latest technology, and its skilled employees. And I shouldn’t forget the two recent designations of Centers of Excellence for Strokes and for Chest Pain treatment. We should take every opportunity to stress these many successes to those we meet in the community.

The Joint Commission VisitWe are still preparing for the Joint Commission visit. Two areas to be specifically careful of are wearing gloves in the hallways or cafeteria. Gloves should be worn to perform a specific task and then removed. Also we have been reminded to always have a lid on cups. Make certain your badge is visible and above the waist. Refresh your memory on RACE and PASS, plus the codes.

Seasonal VolunteersIt’s about time for our seasonal volunteers to head off for a few months. If you are one, please hurry back as we will miss you! BUT BEFORE YOU LEAVE, as seasonal volunteers, you should be sure to complete a Seasonal Leave of Absence for the Volunteer Placement Office, so we know when to expect you back. Thank you for your service and we’ll see you in the Fall. As of March 14 we had 59 (available) four hour shifts. For those here all year please, consider taking on an extra shift for the summer. Contact the Volunteer Placement Office to see what is available, 751-8176.

New HandbooksThe new Handbooks are out. Please stop by the Day Captain’s office and get your copy. There have been several changes so it would be helpful to read it and note the changes. YOTS volunteers can get them from their shift leaders.

THE FOLLOWING AWARDS WERE PRESENTED:

ARTISTIC CREATIVITY: An individual or team, who has demonstrated a talent for making the Shoppe more appealing to customers was awarded to Betty Reed. She has a definite flair for design and enjoys staging items to make them appealing to our customers. She will even stop in on Saturday to adjust any displays where items have sold, always making the most of what has been donated. Betty was a great addition to the Monday staging team.

RELIABILITY: An Auxiliary member working at Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe who has shown outstanding dedication in his or her responsibilities. We had three winners:

Kim English (not present) does whatever is needed in the clothing department. She works 2 days a week and does extra shifts when we are short staffed. She will help train new volunteers and is a

positive influence on others.

Bill & Betty Holbrook are the epitome of reliability. Betty, who is a floor/cashier volunteer on Tuesday mornings, returns on Saturdays to volunteer with Bill as a Pricer. The Holbrooks always can be counted on to work hard, be cheerful and make everyone, customers and volunteers alike, feel at home.

Carol Miller started volunteering at YOTS as a floor volunteer, then switched to Pricer.

Throughout the years, she has taken on more responsibilities without fanfare. She now prices on Monday and Thursday afternoons, and recently filled an additional weekly shift for a Pricer vacancy until a replacement was found. Carol also keeps our greeting cards in impeccable order.

Acknowledges the Patient and/or Visitor:• Follow the 10 – 5 rule: at 10 feet smile and acknowledge and at 5 feet speak. • Smile, make eye contact and greet them in a pleasant manner ...If they look confused or they are looking for something, ask if there is anything you can do for them. • Anytime you see someone looking for a sign that means they are probably looking for something and could use some help. • NEVER ask “How Do You Feel”, you know they are sick or nervous because they are in the hospital. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: An individual who has recently joined Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe as a volunteer but has already shown a remarkable level of skill and dedication. There were three winners here as well.

Sandy Dobson (not shown) joined the Thrift Shoppe in August of last year and quickly became an asset to our team. She jumps in wherever needed and if she sees something that needs to be done, fixed or moved she does it without being asked. Patsy Ellerbroek is another one who dives in to correct any problems. Recently she has tackled the man-cave, going shelf by shelf to straighten the items and make them more eye-catching. This no only helps increase sales, it makes it safer to walk thru the area.

Jan Runyon is a relatively new volunteer but she quickly caught on to what was needed and even volunteers extra days pricing holiday clothing so it is ready for display when the time comes.

ABOVE AND BEYOND: An individual who has shown a style of working with co-volunteers that makes them feel part of the team and confirms their value to YOTS. This too was tied and was presented to:

Tom Feenaghty is a Pricer - cleaning, testing, fixing and pricing donations before they hit the sales floor, but he works more like the Energizer Bunny from the moment he arrives for his shift. Unloading cars, hauling salvage bins to the shed, breaking down boxes for the dumpster, moving heavier items and emptying the trash from both stores -- Tom does it all and never without a big smile. He is a true team player and we are lucky to have him.

Janet Haffner stepped up to provide structure and instructions

for linens volunteers as our linens department coordinator. She volunteers all day Mondays and comes in on other days to work with others. Her willingness to help has greatly improved the linens department for both volunteers and customers.

Ellen Wyatt is the ideal volunteer – always willing to do any job, eager to help both customers and new volunteers, and able to keep the place looking neat and running smoothly - organizing shelves and taking on tasks great and small. In addition to her regular Saturday shift, Ellen often fills in as a sub, eagerly helping her co-workers and customers. Her energy, helpfulness and strong work ethic influence her above and beyond contributions to YOTS. One co-worker said “she brings sunshine wherever she goes.” (Awards - Continued on Page 6)

This year a new category was added. UNSUNG HEROES:

A team or individual deserving special recognition for their consistent reliability, adaptability and service to the Shoppe – usually behind the scenes. Theresa Filkins (not shown) found herself to be the lone linens Pricer on Thursday mornings and worried that there were no linens Pricers on Thursday afternoons. So what did she do? She volunteered to work all day and also began helping on other days when needed. We have more volunteers now with our seasonal help, but Theresa continues to enjoy volunteering all day Thursdays. Her enthusiasm is admirable.

Bev Gaumer (not shown) stands out for her hard work and cheerful demeanor. She is a stay late and come early type of person who has contributed to the overall good of the Shoppe in many ways. She works in clothing and linens on Mondays and Wednesday mornings, filling in where the need is greatest. That works well because she’s a seasonal volunteer. Everyone keeps trying to convince her to stay put in Florida — and at the Thrift Shoppe — all year long.

Vonnie Cull, Norma Cyr (not present) and Ann Heberlig work as a team to keep our sizable Book Nook area tidy and appealing. They volunteer quietly and efficiently, each on a different day, and their efforts include keeping the book overflow area in order. Because of them, our alphabetically arranged Book Nook continues to be a customer favorite.

Another new award this year was the LEADERSHIP AWARD OF EXCELLENCE - An individual who has provided outstanding leadership, support to the organization, and has worked beyond the call of duty.

Pat Wesolowski has been volunteering at Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe since the opening almost ten years ago. She serves as part of the overall management team, called the Steering Committee. This year she was called upon to not only do her normal projects and regular shift, but to help with the transition within the clothing department. It is never easy to replace a key role when the post is left open due to illness, but Pat successfully navigated the process with her empathy and willingness to listen. She definitely displayed her leadership skills under less than ideal conditions and preserved the crucial revenue stream created from the clothing department at the Shoppe.

The final award was actually part of the hospital wide Auxiliary Awards but was presented to Nancy Cummings and Beth Malak at this luncheon because they are Thrift Shoppe volunteers. Nancy and Beth won the award for

GOING THE EXTRA MILE –An individual or department whose commitment to excellence consistently surpasses expectations. The volunteer or team who goes above and beyond to make things happen.

Together they took on the task to setup and staff the Silent Auction room at this year’s Hearts for Our Hospital Gala. This meant organizing a team of 20-plus volunteers to create an attractive room that was keeping with the theme and providing eye-catching displays but still highlighted the auction item. This year, because of their preplanning and hard

work, the entire silent auction process went smoother than ever. They set up a system that allowed for rapid tear-down without loss of item identity thereby making the packaging of items easy and accurate.

Their behind the scenes work is part of what made this year’s gala such a financial success.

NEW HONORARY LIFETIME MEMBERS 2018It is our privilege to pay tribute to these ladies and gentlemen by making them Honorary Lifetime Members of the TVRH Auxiliary.

Honorary Lifetime Membership is a special recognition granted to a retired Auxiliary volunteer after a minimum of seven (7) years of distinguished volunteer service to The Villages Regional Hospital and a minimum of 2,000 total hours served. The list for this year should bring our total to 70+ over the past four

years. We do them once/year at the annual luncheon.

An Honorary Lifetime Member shall have a voice in the Auxiliary, receive the Auxiliary Hummingbird Newsletters, invitations to the Auxiliary annual luncheon, and other events, but will have no voting rights. Honorary Lifetime Membership can be nominated by any Active Member but must be approved by a majority vote of the Executive Committee.

A POSITIVE ATTITUDE GOES A LONG WAY!It can be hard to hear friends talk about less than perfect experiences in our hospital, especially the Emergency Department. Unfortunately, after the fact, they may not be interested in your explanation, but you can feel confident that Michael Pittman and Susan Williams will continue to work at improving every need of the hospital.

Each month, Joan Hanosek, 2nd Vice President and the Chair of Patient Survey, shares how dedicated to excellence and resolving the Emergency Department issues that cause many patients to be dissatisfied with our hospital. This month, she shared that on a recent patient survey of 60-plus patients, there wer only positive comments regarding their ED visit!

Joan Hanosek also shared that Mike Pittman and Susan Williams, are assembling five member teams for the ED Admit Waiting Room. These will include a nurse navigator as the charge nurse, a triage nurse, tech, and two volunteers each shift on every shift. Susan Williams has continued to stress that the

volunteers are an important part of the team in the ED.

Joan also spoke to the group about the new Bridge Clinic that will be occupying the space where Urgent Care was on the first floor of the hospital. This is a 12 month pilot program and will

be run by two RN Transitional Care Coordinators. This program focuses on patients with diagnoses that are at high risk for readmission. These include congestive heart failure, COPD and acute MI.

Patients who are unable to get in to see their PCPs in the first week after checking out, will see one of these nurses to check vital signs, review medications, help with setting up appointments

and answering questions. This will hopefully reduce readmissions for which the hospital does not get reimbursed from Medicare.

Gloria Counselman is assembling volunteers for this new venture who will be involved in such tasks as greeting patients, calling

patients to remind them of their appointment in the clinic, as well as helping set up appointments for the patients.

Todd is the spokesperson for the Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center, an outpatient service for the hospital dealing with chronic wounds. These are wounds that don’t heal or may also be infected. He is speaking to groups to get the word out about its location, services they offer, that patients can be seen without a referral, and that they accept all insurance coverages. Education is key. They are located on the 2nd floor of the East Campus just past classroom #1. Todd shared an interesting statistic that only about 1% of their patients are referred directly from the hospital. Most patients come from physician offices and self referral. He shared a Frequently Asked Questions sheet with the group. Todd encouraged us all to spread the word about the Wound Center. He is

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or tube. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well-established treatment for decompression of conditions such as _serious infections, bubbles of air in your blood vessels, and wounds that won’t heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury.

In a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, the air pressure is increased to three times higher than normal air

pressure. Under these conditions, your lungs can gather more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure.

Your blood carries this oxygen throughout your body. This helps fight bacteria and stimulate the release of substances called growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing.

TVRH has partnered with Mr. Howard Moon to provide education regarding ADA (American Disabilities Act) guidelines related to Service Animals.

Howard is a Service Dog owner and disability rights advocate who has held appointments as a disability, mental health and children’s advocate for Governors Bush and Crist. He has also served on the Florida Advocacy Councils.

Howard will cover topics such as:

• Which animals are considered to be service animals

• Two questions that can be legally asked to identify service animals

• Service animal handler’s rights and responsibilities

• Hospital rights and responsibilities
