AmCham Germany Annual Report 2021 2

Preface

The last year has been a special and challenging one. But it also serves as a prime example of how

we, as AmCham Germany, can deal with challenges through transatlantic cooperation.

The pandemic had us firmly in its grip and is still affecting all of our activities and interactions.

But the year has also set some other pioneering developments in motion – in the world as

well as in our organization. The US administration under President Joe Biden presents an

opportunity to rebalance the transatlantic partnership. The transatlantic economic ties are

on a stable footing and have been able to counter the recent turbulent years with robust

and trusting relations. Nevertheless, the success of the transatlantic economy should not

be taken for granted. We are building on a relaunch of cooperation by promoting a strong

partnership between the US, the EU, and Germany. It means emphasizing that the US is and

will remain Germany’s most important partner outside Europe with aligned values and interests.

Looking back, the last year has been characterized by many restrictions, especially in person-

to-person meetings. But AmCham Germany successfully developed virtual event formats to

bring our community together online with profound content and high-level speakers. Some

of our event highlights were our Female Founders Award Ceremony and the Transatlantic

Business Conference. Alongside the goal of revitalizing the transatlantic relationship,

we have launched a new virtual event series: Transatlantic Talks 2021: Paving the Path

Ahead. We also continued our top-level meetings with German political leaders, such as the

Federal Minister of Health, Jens Spahn, the Bavarian State Minister, Dr. Florian Herrmann,

and many other political decision makers. Lastly, the candidate for chancellor of the CDU/

CSU party, Armin Laschet, is a keynote speaker during this year's Annual Membership Meeting.

All of this is only possible through the generous engagement and loyalty from you, our members.

AmCham Germany is member-led and member-driven. It is the dedication of our regional chairs

and regional committee members that keeps us actively engaged across Germany. With the

expertise and commitment of our policy chairs and policy committee members, we can advocate

for a healthy business climate in Germany, represent our members’ interests and meet regularly

Preface

with top political leaders. Our board of directors is dedicated to setting the course for AmCham

Germany for the next years by making relevant decisions regarding the Chamber’s strategy. You

all drive the Chamber and ensure that the voice of transatlantic business – our voice – is being

heard. We are all AmCham Germany.

We have to thank Frank Sportolari, who made this possible with his dedication and outstanding

work as president over the last three years. Frank is one of the strongest advocates for transatlantic

business and, thanks to his ideas and commitment, the Chamber was able to extend its network

on both sides of the Atlantic and improve the transatlantic business partnership for our members.

At the Annual Membership Meeting 2021, the membership will elect a new president and new

members for the executive committee and the board of directors.

In the next year, we also want to use our network to talk with influencers and decision makers

to communicate AmCham Germany’s positions and to ensure that the voice of transatlantic busi-

ness is being heard. With many exciting projects and activities ahead, we will continue to offer

you, our members and the transatlantic business community, a variety of high-quality events

with political leaders, international trade experts and transatlantic stakeholders. We will keep

the business community updated on the latest developments in transatlantic business with our

various communication channels such as our podcast The Clue, our newsletters Chamber News

and The Navigator, and through our website. Take the opportunity to follow AmCham Germany

on social media so you won’t miss any updates.

Thank you, our members, for your dedication and support during these special times.

Signature Events / Transatlantic Business Conference

On November 12, 2020, the 14th Transatlantic

Business Conference took place – for the

first time in a virtual format. The conference

centered around the topic “The German-

American Transatlantic Partnership in the

Next Decade”. In addition

to transatlantic relations,

the outcome of the

recent US presidential

election and economic

recovery in the midst of

the COVID-19 pandemic

were at the forefront of the conference.

“Now, after Joe Biden has won the US elec-

tion,” Sportolari said, “I believe that rebuild-

ing trust on both sides of the Atlantic is the

key to successful transatlantic trade and

prosperity in Germany and the US.” The

US and Germany need to solve their trade

conflicts and the WTO needs to be reformed.

About 200 viewers on both sides of the

Atlantic joined the virtual discussions on

the implications of the US election and

the future of the transatlantic economic

partnership post COVID-19.

about the event

AmCham Germany’s Transatlantic Business

Conference is a unique forum to engage in

constructive dialogue and foster transat-

lantic collaboration on issues of relevance

for both Europe and the

US. It provides a platform

for exchange for our

members and top-level

speakers from business,

government, media, and

think tanks.

Federica Mogherini, Rector of College of Europe: “America and Europe share deep ties that connect our societies, economies, even families, beyond institutional relations.”

Ambassador Richard Burt emphasized the importance of German-American cooperation and gave the example of the joint invention of a vaccine against COVID-19 by the Ameri-can pharmaceutical company Pfizer and the German company BionTech.

Constanze StelzenmĂĽller outlined that we need to find solutions for transatlantic trade issues.

As part of the Transatlantic Evening on April 27, 2021,

AmCham Germany honored two successful female founders

prevailed in the application process with their innovative

and successful business models.

business models for the future

In addition to the innovative strength of the business model,

financing and growth figures were also evaluated in the

selection process. “We are very pleased to award this year

two passionate founders whose business models are setting

signs for the future. With their ideas, both want to actively

shape the path towards more sustainability and the busi-

ness models have the potential to do so. It is precisely such

innovative ideas that we need in the fight against climate

change on both sides of the Atlantic,” said Simone Menne,

Executive Vice President of AmCham Germany.

Jury member Torsten Oltmanns, chairman of the Berlin-

Brandenburg Chapter, emphasized: “The two winners are

role models for women to become entrepreneurs themselves.

Far too few women start their own businesses. This has

to change and with

our award we want

to contribute to giv-

ing more visibility to

female founders.”

crisis on businesses (and Siemens in particular) and the “new normal”

regarding digitization and global business.

The NextGen Initiative supports the

future of AmCham Germany by creat-

ing an enthusiastic, digitally driven

community that is attractive for com-

ing generations of diverse talent. Each

year, AmCham Germany’s corporate

members nominate young profes-

sionals to take part in the program.

Due to COVID-19, the program had to

be adjusted but is sought to continue

on its very successful path as soon as

possible.

Through the NextGen Initiative,

AmCham Germany connects young

professionals who have a strong

interest in fostering the transatlan-

tic partnership. In bringing together

this group of aspiring people from a

variety of sectors, it is our goal to sup-

port tomorrow’s decision makers and

transatlantic business leaders. By par-

ticipating in the NextGen Initiative,

our member companies profit from

A Call for Action: Eine neue Agenda fĂĽr transatlantischen Handel und Investitionen

Daniel Andrich & Katharina-Luise Kittler

Transatlantic Talks 2021

Paving the Path Ahead

In light of the new US Administration and alongside

the goal of revitalizing the transatlantic relationship,

AmCham Germany has launched a new virtual event

series, Transatlantic Talks 2021: Paving the Path Ahead.

The series aims to offer insights on what to expect from

the Biden Administration and the 117th United States

Congress on transatlantic topics. This format provides

a platform for exchange between distinguished US

experts and decision makers, AmCham Germany

members, as well as the broader transatlantic business

community.

Discussions will focus around a number of AmCham

Germany’s policy areas, including trade; digital policy;

energy and climate; healthcare and life sciences; and

aerospace and defense, and highlight the importance

of transatlantic cooperation to address and overcome

mutual global challenges. The Transatlantic Talks

events will take place throughout the year and are

organized in cooperation with AmCham Germany’s

Regional Chapters.

KICKOFF EVENT

What to Expect for the Transatlantic Business Community from the New US Administration

March 16, 2021

speakers: Senator Barbara Boxer and Congressman Charles

Boustany

Both speakers provided insights into the expectations,

opportunities and challenges for the current US administra-

tion. They gave AmCham Germany members an extensive

and bipartisan overview on diverse policy areas of focus on

a national and international level. They identified possibili-

ties for transatlantic cooperation in areas such as trade,

digital policy and health. Overall, the statements of both

speakers highlighted the current window of opportunity for

the transatlantic community.

Thank you to our Regional Chapter Rhine-Main and Chapter

Chair David Knower for the organization of the event. Thank

you to our sponsor Cerberus Beteiligungsberatung GmbH.

Revitalizing the Transatlantic Relationship: Advancing Our Shared Economic Interests

May 11, 2021

speaker: Ambassador Philipp T. Reeker, Acting Assistant

Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, US

Department of State

Ambassador Reeker provided insights on diverse topics

of current relevance for the transatlantic community. He

outlined the importance of this moment in time, with

changes taking place in both the German and US admin-

istrations this year. He emphasized the challenges facing

the transatlantic community: In a globalized world, policy

issues are no longer limited to a single country or issue

area, but overlap and affect a multitude of countries and

stakeholders. These challenges, which are regarded by the

Biden administration as focal points, include the effects of

the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and China’s rise.

Ambassador Reeker provided an overview of areas in

which transatlantic cooperation is needed as a means to

strengthen mutual engagement: transatlantic security,

which involves climate change and its challenges, infra-

structure, the digital economy, and finding innovative

solutions together for a prosperous future.

Thank you to our Regional Chapter Baden-WĂĽrttemberg and

Chapter Chair Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wegen for the organization

of this event.

Policy Activities / Federal Elections in Germany – Position Paper

Expanding Germany’s Economic Strength through CooperationRecommendations for the next German government on the occasion of the 2021 Bundestag election

February 18, 2021

Virtual discussion with JĂĽrgen Hardt, MdB

February 4, 2021

Virtual discussion with Peter Beyer, MdB

trade Promoting economic growth by

removing barriers

The German government should advo-

cate for a moratorium on all EU tariffs

and punitive trade measures and for a

clear roadmap by the EU Commission

to, if necessary, unilaterally reduce

all tariffs. A clear signal is needed to

advance the rules-based liberalization

of global trade.

healthcare Ensuring supply secu-

rity through resilient value chains

and strong research and innovation

In the healthcare sector, vaccine devel-

opment has just recently shown how

German and US companies can work

together quickly and effectively to

contain the pandemic. These innova-

tions are based on essential conditions

such as open borders, predictable supply

chains and clear commitment to intel-

lectual property rights. These require-

ments must be upheld also to foster a

high willingness of companies to invest.

tax Reduce the overall burden and

minimize bureaucracy

The way out of the current economic

crisis and the necessary digital and

ecological transformation will only

succeed if the framework conditions

for investments in forward-looking

technologies and jobs in Germany and

the EU are not significantly worse than

in other countries with which Germany

competes. Thus, corporate taxes should

not be allowed to exceed the 25% level.

digital policy Ensure legal certainty for

international data transfer and harness

the potential of artificial intelligence

One of the most important steps is the

creation of a “transatlantic data space”

for European and US companies, which

would provide a legal, secure, and sus-

tainable framework and ensure the

same level of protection. In the short

term, Germany, together with the EU

Commission, must approach the US gov-

ernment to agree on organizational and

technical interim measures. Looking

ahead, we need a “Digital Transatlantic

Economic Space” with the declared goal

of maintaining the competitiveness

and innovative capacity of the EU and

the US in an extremely dynamic global

competitive environment.

energy & climate Climate protection

as a transatlantic task

With regard to climate protection, there

is a unique opportunity with the new US

administration to reach tangible agree-

ments. From effective CO2 pricing, to

creating a worldwide level playing field

and investments in renewable energies,

our opportunities lie in the transatlantic

cooperation.

aerospace & defense Advance climate-

neutral aviation and harmonize exports

Steps toward transatlantic cooperation

are also needed in the field of aviation,

such as fair access to research funding

to enable innovation for climate-neutral

aviation.

Business ServicesAmCham Germany offers its members a variety of customized member support services and

networking opportunities. Whether it is researching information and guidelines, or matching a

member with an expert from the AmCham Germany community, we believe that sharing knowledge

is the best way to achieve growth and success.

Regardless of the level of your membership, your

inquiry is never too small and is an exclusive AmCham

Germany membership benefit.

One benefit of AmCham Germany corporate member-

ship is the referral system. Each incoming inquiry is

likely to generate potential new business for your

company. AmCham Germany coordinates referrals

according to location, areas of expertise, and com-

pany size to provide the inquiring party with the most

appropriate contact. Inquiries which lead to member

referrals include topics such as legal matters, relating

to corporate and employment law; data protection;

tax issues; and notary services. Other member-related

inquiries are commonly referred to agencies and orga-

nizations which support market entry, real estate, and

business development.

Referral System

In recent months, the most commonly requested

inquiry topic was associated with requests for infor-

mation on transatlantic travel restrictions in addition

to a related topic of the issuance of US visas. AmCham

Germany supported several members with their inqui-

ries related to appointments with US Consulates across

Germany and provided reliable guidance in uncertain

times. Additionally, AmCham Germany also advised

member companies on the application process for

assistance loan programs resulting from COVID-19

pandemic, and connected them with respective subject

matter experts for further support.

Business Support during the COVID-19 Pandemic

AmCham Germany continues to make recommenda-

tions and guide its members when navigating the

process of identifying the correct business visa catego-

ries. In collaboration with the US Mission to Germany,

AmCham Germany organized a virtual discussion with

US Consular staff in late March 2021 to provide mem-

bers with the most current information regarding new

US travel regulations, the status of visa applications,

and how to obtain a National Interest Exception (NIE)

AmCham Germany Annual Report 2021 30

Congratulations and thank you!70 years anniversary Messe Frankfurt GmbH

In celebration of its 70-year-membership anniversary, we spoke with Detlef Braun, Member of

the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt GmbH, about current challenges of the event industry,

about being a member of AmCham Germany and about transatlantic relations.

Messe Frankfurt has one of the most important

economic impacts in the Rhine-Main region.

How does the current situation affect business

regarding internationally oriented trade shows?

The coronavirus pandemic has hit the entire

event sector hard. In Germany, physical trade

fairs have been sidelined for over a year. An Ifo

study found that Messe Frankfurt events in

Germany generated purchasing power of €3.6

billion every year while safeguarding more than

33,000 jobs. These effects are being lost to the

pandemic, which is preventing us from promot-

ing business development in the region. So that

our customers still have order and interaction

platforms, we have implemented new hybrid

and digital formats since the outbreak of the

pandemic. Although well received, they are no

substitute for physical trade fairs.

What trends do you foresee for the next year?

What role will hybrid event concepts play in

the future?

Messe Frankfurt has been investing in digital

events and related services for over two decades.

The pandemic gave an additional boost to our

digitalisation activities, which we developed

further using our many years of expertise. We

very much expect that our physical events will

continue to have digital elements, whether in the

form of individual lead generation, matchmaking

or providing information. This depends on the

sectors in question. But one thing is for sure:

nothing can replace personal interaction.

How has your company benefited from being

a member of AmCham Germany over the past

years?

Messe Frankfurt has been a member of AmCham

Germany since 1951 and we value the organ-

isation’s work greatly. AmCham Germany is

preparing itself for transparent dialogue at

international level and for an open, productive

business climate. We share these values, given

that events thrive on interaction between busi-

ness partners at international level. Our trade

fairs worldwide play host to many exhibitors

and visitors from North and South America and,

with our local subsidiaries, we organise events in

Atlanta, Chicago, Mexico City, Toronto, etc. I look

forward to continuing the working relationship

we have always enjoyed with AmCham.

Evonik is one of the world’s leading specialty chemi-

cals companies. We may not manufacture tires, mat-

tresses, medications, or animal feeds, but Evonik is

part of all of those products –and many more. While

we often contribute only small amounts of material,

those contributions are precisely what make the dif-

ference. That's because Evonik products make tires

fuel-efficient, mattresses more elastic, medications

more effective, and animal feeds healthier. That’s

what specialty chemicals are all about. And when it

comes to specialty chemicals, we're among the best

in the world.

Evonik is active in more than 100 countries around

the world and generated sales of €12.2 billion and

an operating profit (adjusted EBITDA) of €1.9 billion

in 2020. Evonik goes far beyond chemistry to create

innovative, profitable and sustainable solutions for

customers. About 33,000 employees work together for

a common purpose: We want to improve life, today

and tomorrow.

Texas Instruments has been making

progress possible for decades. We are

a global semiconductor company

that designs, manufactures and sells

analog and embedded processing

chips. Our passion to create a better

world by making electronics more

affordable through semiconductors

is alive today as each generation of

innovation builds upon the last

to make our technology smaller,

more efficient, more reliable and

more affordable  – opening new

markets and making it possible

for semiconductors to go into

electronics everywhere. We think

of this as Engineering Progress.

At our European headquarter in Fre-

ising, employees from 60 different

countries work together and the dif-

ferent cultures and perspectives are

inspiring us every day. We believe

diversity makes our culture more

inclusive, our company stronger

and products more innovative. We

thrive by being inclusive and cre-

ate an environment that unlocks

everyone’s potential.

We invest heavily in helping equip,

empower and prepare future genera-

tions of innovators by supporting

science, technology, engineering

and math (STEM) education. We

partner with universities and sup-

port national and local MINT ini-

tiatives like Girls’ Day or FabLab, a

makerspace in Freising. A special

commitment for us is supporting

girls and women to go into a career

in STEM.

We believe strong companies build

strong communities so we’re engag-

ing with regional organizations,

work with local schools and work

to continuously improve environ-

mental performance and efficiency

at our sites worldwide.
