SUMMER TIME AND THE LIVING IS ………… Summer is the time of year when we have a little extra time to travel and relax with family and friends. Well - I can dream - can’t I?

By now chapter leaders have completed most of their plans for the next year. New officers are learning what their re-sponsibilities are. Remember that a chapter must hold at least four meetings a year. To have a meeting there must be a President and a secretary present. Chapters must have a minimum of twelve members.

The Leadership Seminars held in Dayton and Elyria were well received. Attendees had a chance to participate in several different breakout sessions that were conducted by your state officers. These sessions included half days for Member-ship/Chapter Strengthening, DKG 101, Communications, Treasurers and Educa-tional Excellence. A special all day ses-sion was provided for first time presi-dents. Besides the sessions, leadership activities were also conducted. All chap-ters received 5 new booklets of infor-mation that were prepared by Delta Kap-pa Gamma International. A huge THANK YOU goes to Ann Todd, Leadership Chair-man for all the planning and organiza-tions of this event. (See pictures later in

this newsletter.)

In July many members attended the International Convention in Nashville, Tenn. It was a time to make new friends and reconnect with previous friends. The speakers at each General Session were very informative. Did you know that there is now a Girl Scout patch available from DKG? I am always moved by the procession of flags from all the countries that have DKG chapters. This year during the retiring of the flags, there was a Girl Scout serving as the color guard. They were so proud and just adorable. The DKG flag’s color guard was accompanied by Girl Scout named Freedom whose scout troop number is the year DKG began. Do you know what her number is?

Besides the breakout sessions that we could attend, they had Hot Topics. These were 20 minute sessions of short topics. I was pleased to be asked to present one of the Hot Topics on Friday afternoon.

The next International Convention will be in 2018 in Austin, Texas (where DKG began). Plan to attend, it is a wonderful experience and gives you another view of DKG. Enjoy our beautiful weather as

Ahh, don’t we wish that were so? In reality, summer is a busy time of trips, outings, visits, and making plans for the coming year. And it is a time to be making your DKG plans for interesting, exciting programs and events during this year or biennium so that members will be eager to attend and potential new members will be enticed to come. It is time to make your plans to welcome new teachers to local school systems and introduce them to the support and enjoyment of your local chapter. What about plans to recognize, honor, and support your working members? Oh yes, be sure to include plans for a great reunion experience with former members some of whom may be ready for rein-statement because their life commitments have changed and they can resume enjoying the benefits of again being a member of your chapter. While you are planning, also consider a community pro-ject that furthers your chapter’s commitment to education and the well-being of students. Service projects are valued as much by those performing the service as by those re-ceiving the service. These projects bind your members to-gether in a participative, team-like way and, please, let them be a benefit to education, teachers, and students so that we carry the message of supporting the education pro-fession and excellence in education. By the way, save some time to enjoy family and friends, have some outdoor time, read a few books, enjoy your own kind of self-indulgence, and then look forward to a new ac-ademic year and the rewards and challenges that it brings - appreciate some easy living time!

Did you know? International Scholarships for doctoral studies are $10,000. International Scholarships for graduate studies are $6,000. The application are available at www.dkg.org. The completed application and documentation are due February 1.

$.20 of the $1.00 scholarship fee goes to the international scholar-ship fund and $.80 stays with you for state organization and chap-ter scholarship funds.

Donations or bequest to the International Scholarship Fund are tax deductible for the U.S. and some other countries.

Since 1940, the Society has awarded $4,757,500 to 1090 members.

For the 2015-2016 year the Society awarded $96,000 for Interna-tional Scholarships

You are trained to be a leader. Now is the time to jump in and provide the devotion and leadership to women in education that your career path has led you. It will be an honor and a privilege to serve our wonderful organization that supports women teachers in such phenomenal ways. It will also be rewarding and hard work; everything worthwhile is, isn't it? Now is the time to begin the process for the next biennium. Ten positions are available to be elected to serve from July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2019. These are the five officers and the five members of the Nominations Committee (one per Region). Even if a member is currently serving as an officer, this procedure must be followed. Please ask your nominee permission to enter her name before doing so. And, be sure she completes the Application Form. Nominations may be made by any member of the Alpha Delta State organization by completing a Recommenda-tion Form for Nominee of Elected Positions which can be found on the ADS website. The Nominee must also complete the Application Form for Elected Officers, also found on the website. These forms are required and need to be forwarded to the Nominations Committee before November 1, 2016.

Beta Nu Celebrates 75 years!

Exactly 75 years and 11 days after the founding of the Beta Nu chapter of Alpha Delta State, our current members celebrated this significant mile-stone. The wonderful luncheon meeting took place on May 21st and included the installation of our honorary member, Liane Phillips, co-founder of Cincinnati Works, and the installation of offic-ers for the new biennium. The program was a “walk down memory lane” about Beta Nu’s 16 charter members. This was done as a play with music and many “actors”. The play story includ-ed the education and teaching biographies of these 16 ladies. Also read were their hand written responses to the invitation to become Beta Nu charter members. Another delightful part of the program was a video tape showing 2 of our char-ter members recorded 25 years ago. Louise (Susie) Brand and Opal Shifflet shared their memories of Beta Nu’s founding in Oxford, Ohio and the chapter’s first 50 years in South West Ohio.

All of Beta Nu wants to say thank you to the Alpha Delta officers who attended. We appreciate the fine greeting given by Alpha Delta State president, Patricia Cermak. It was special to have her join us along with Dr. Mary Jane Kaufman. Also thanks to our great chapter committee for the celebra-tion.

Following the Alpha Delta State current theme of “We Bloom and Soar as Key Women Educators”, Beta Nu is grateful for our founding and looks forward to our future.

Mary Jane explains some of the information in the new Go-To-Guide. She worked on the 2014-2016 committee that set out the following:

Prepared proposed changes to the International Standing Rules due October 1, 2015.

Revised the Constitution and International Standing Rules with the 2014 amendments and amendment changes.

Updated the Go-To Guide The Constitution committee receives proposals for amending the Constitu-tion and the International Standing Rules, makes recommendations for changes to the Administrative Board and presents approved proposals to the international convention for vote. Notification of proposed changes to the Constitution and the International Standing Rules must be published no later than the March/April issue of the DKG NEWS. Following the inter-national convention, the committee will confirm that the Constitution, International Standing Rules and Handbook are in concordance. The parlia-mentarian serves as a consultant

Beta Delta Grant Money Helps in Many Ways

When I received a Beta Delta Chapter (Delta Kappa Gamma) classroom grant in fall 2015, I never realized how the 5-gallon plastic buckets and drumsticks could have an impact beyond the walls of my classroom. I also had no idea how many folks are struggling with mental health issues (1 in 5!) This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to see the impact of bucket drumming on mental health. From June 20-24, I was an STEP extern at Mental Health America of Licking County. I spent one day at the Y.E.S. (Youth Engaged in Service) club. (When I mentioned I am a member of Beta Delta Chapter of DKG, they were humbly thankful for our regular donations.) The teens had fun learning “We Will Rock You” and other basic rock patterns. Incredibly, this noisy activity captured their attention for over an hour! At the Youth Advocacy day-camp, students were learning about connecting to their emotions using the Disney/Pixar film Inside Out. We used the instruments to convey feelings of Joy, Fear, Disgust, Anger, and Sadness. The students loved making a joyful noise, ex-perimenting with tempo, volume/intensity, timbre, and meter to convey what was in their minds and hearts. My week culminated with a class called Getting Ahead. As we took the buckets outside, a dozen gentle-men from a local halfway house used pot lids as cym-bals, ash cans for cowbells, and tried other creative sound combinations. I noticed a young man whose per-cussion skills far outshined mine. He shared that he had once invested over $15,000 in percussion gear. Then he became addicted to drugs and hocked it all to support his habit. That Bridges Out of Poverty class was the first time in years that he gripped drumsticks in hand; his eyes filled with hope and energy. He asked me “What do I have to do to get a set of these sticks?” I replied, “Stay clean and keep playing.” I am so thankful that the classroom grant I received enabled me to drum up a difference outside the classroom.
