The Wave Volume 17, Issue 15 April 12, 2019 Mrs. Ackley’s Message . . . SCHOOL SAFETY This week is Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week. We completed our annual tornado drill on April 11th. Despite the state’s date change, I decided to conduct our drill as originally scheduled due to Forward testing on the afternoon of April 12th. We always monitor the weather closely at North Lake School as we do not want to be caught by a surprise. We have a severe weather plan and practice to keep our students safe. INTERESTING WEATHER FACT: Tornadoes can occur any time during the day or night, but are most frequent between 4 pm and 9 pm. This fact is why our night custodian, Laurie Doleschy, participates in our drills and educates our nightly custodial team on these procedures to ensure safety for groups here outside the school day. CHARACTER BUILDING As part of our continued efforts to prevent bullying and harassment at North Lake School, we are working with Boosterthon again this spring. The 2018-19 Boosterthon program includes a STEAM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) character theme called Mind- Spark Mystery. Students will learn five 21st Century character traits (citizenship, zest, integrity, teamwork, & growth) helping to strengthen themselves and our school. More details coming soon. THE NEST The numbers in the NEST have been growing. The NEST is a classroom supervised by our instructional aide, Mrs. Minor, and utilized when students have missing classroom work or incomplete homework. Seventh & Eighth Grade Parents, please help encourage your child to complete his/her home- work on a nightly basis and finish the school year in a strong fashion. The purpose of the NEST is to complete missing work and the extra time given to students is intended for this purpose. If work remains incomplete despite NEST support, your child may earn a zero on the assignment or project. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s home- work, please speak to Mrs. Osowski, Mrs. Goll, Mrs. Cull, or Mrs. Cottrell. I am happy to help solve recurring issues as well and encourage you to check TYLER as often as needed for your family. SUMMER SCHOOL REGISTRATION North Lake is the happy host of the Arrowhead Area Sum- mer School Cooperative again this June. Online registration opens on April 23rd and we hope you choose to enroll your child. I truly enjoy seeing all the children in this fine program! More information can be found later in this Wave. NORTH LAKE SAILING SCHOOL GRANT The North Lake Sailing School is awarding a sailing in- struction grant for a child attending North Lake School. The child must be 6-10 years old and interested in sailing to qualify. Current North Lake Sailing School students are not eligible to participate. The grant opportunity is in the Wave list of attachments, and a representative from the North Lake Sailing School will be here on Friday, May 17th. TIDYING UP I want to thank the 5th grade band for their leadership with our Lost & Found. All of the items can be found in the commons and will be available until April 30th. I was very impressed with the folding skills of the boys and girls! The musicians also made nice banners to advertise the items. After April 30th, the school will donate the clothing, etc. to a local charity. (continued)

Mrs. Ackley’s Message . . . UPPER SCHOOL TRANSITION Going upstairs to fifth grade is a big change for students. Although we practice switching classes with our content area specialization in grades 3 & 4, it is still challenging for fifth graders to manage four core classes in the beginning of the year. Fifth graders have a homeroom teacher and Mr. Ray (math), Mr. Kaczor (science), Mrs. Andorfer (social studies), and Mrs. Loescher (literacy). They also have electives in physical education, music, art, and STEM. Teachers are sensitive to this change and Mrs. Lesch, our school counselor, provides additional support as needed. One main advantage to our school structure (grades 3-8) is looping. Teachers have classes of students for two years in a row and can really get to know your children academically and socially. As a reminder, if you have teacher or peer requests, please put those in writing to me by May 15th. Planning for the 2019-20 school year has begun in the office. MRS. BARKER’S BOOK FAIR Thank you, Mrs. Sue Barker, for coordinating the Scholastic Spring Book Fair beginning on April 24th. Dear Dads, the book fair will be open during your time in Paris (Father-Daughter Dance) on Friday, April 26th. Book fair volunteers should have received a SignUp Genius invitation. Contact Mrs. Dorow if you are inter- ested in helping out.

ACHIEVING OUTSIDE OF NLS Erica Bub had a wonderful weekend March 16th and 17th. Erica’s Arrowhead Basket- ball Club (ABC) won a basketball tournament in Beaver Dam AND Erica’s Arrowhead Volleyball Club (AVC) won their very first tournament in Watertown. Congratulations to Erica and her teammates. Parents, please let me know the good things happening with your kids so I can share with our school family. Express Yourself

Counseling Corner: Hello North Lake Families! During their time here at North Lake students experience and learn about peer pressure, both positive and negative. Peer pressure is often associated with drugs and alcohol, but really surfaces in a lot of peer-centered situations. There is pressure to dress a certain way, hang out with particular people, NOT hang out with some people, copy homework, play video games, use social media among so many others. A lot of times, children truly don’t know how to handle these situations and they need practice! Some strategies we talk about are avoiding troublesome situations/places, surrounding yourself with peers who support your decisions and values, saying no in an assertive voice and making an excuse. (By the way - I always tell students that you will likely be very willing to be their excuse!) Try practicing some of these strategies with your children. Talk to them about how YOU handle peer pressure! Practice potential scenarios and strategies. Let them know your values. All of this will help them be ready when tricky situations come up. As always, please let me know if there are any ways that I can support your child! Take care- Jill Lesch [email protected]
