    After the downpours of April and May, all eyes are watching theheavens for the outdoor events of the Diamond Jubilee. It is stilltoo early to make a confident forecast for the early June bank

    holiday, but if past history is anything to go by there could besome big surprises

    Things were not much better for the silver jubilee celebrations of George V

    in May 1935. It, too, began in warm sunshine, but suddenly turned bitterlycold with a deep and widespread frost on May 16. Shortly afterwards heavysnow carpeted most of the country, with even the West Country looking likea winter wonderland.
