(BPT) - The change of season creates a need for many

adjustments around your home, from switching over

wardrobes to warmer clothes, to completing necessary

yard work and home repairs. You can also make adjust-

ments to ensure you get the most out of your heating and

cooling dollars as temperatures change.

When you consider that space heating is the largest en-

ergy expense in the average U.S. home - accounting for 45

percent of energy bills, according to energy.gov - it makes

sense to take steps to improve heating efficiency. Tackle

this change-of-season checklist to help lower home en-

ergy costs now, before the long, cold winter sets in.

Program your thermostat An easy first step is to turn down the temperature on

your thermostat, particularly while you’re away from

home. You can save roughly 10 percent a year on your

heating and cooling bills by turning your thermostat back

10 to 15 degrees for eight hours, according to energy.gov.

And, since fall temperatures can fluctuate quickly, from

warm and balmy during one part of the day to cold and

blustery during another, consider a programmable ther-

mostat that you can adjust remotely as weather condi-

tions change.

For example, the Trane XL824 Smart Control Wi-Fi

thermostat lets you program seven days of temperatures,

with up to six schedules per day, as well as monitor tem-

peratures and make adjustments remotely from a smart-

phone, tablet or computer. Compatible with Nexia Home

Intelligence, the control enables you to receive tempera-

ture alerts via text and email. You can even view system-

generated charts to determine how much energy you’re

using, so you can immediately make adjustments to save

money.

Change your furnace filterWhen your HVAC system circulates and filters the air in

your home, dust and dirt particles build up on the filter.

Excessive accumulation can block the airflow, forcing the

system to work harder to maintain the desired tempera-

ture. And the harder the system works, the more energy

it uses. Your system will have to work less, use less energy

and last longer if you clean or replace your filter monthly,

or at least every three months.

Take steps to keep cold air out Small cracks and holes throughout your home can be a

source of heat loss. To help keep cold air out and warm

air in, add weather-stripping around windows and doors.

Consider adding insulation to your attic or crawl space.

Even closing your drapes at night can help keep heat in-

side.

Protect outdoor HVAC equipment Take some time to care for your outdoor HVAC unit,

too. Clean off any fallen and decaying leaves from the fan

grill so they won’t affect its operating efficiency.

Schedule annual HVAC servicing Now is an ideal time to schedule an annual servicing

checkup for your heating and cooling system. A qualified

dealer can inspect your system and recommend any ad-

justments to ensure it is working properly and make any

necessary repairs.

These steps will better prepare your home for the sea-

son change, and also keep your family more comfortable,

no matter what the weather brings. So check off all the

items on your list and watch those lower energy bills

come in.

(BPT) - As the temperature drops,

your lawn and garden will start set-

tling into a dormant state. As you prep

your landscaping and garden for a

winter’s slumber, it’s a good idea to

review the tools you used all summer.

Taking care of this task now will en-

sure they’re in good shape come

spring when it’s time to use them

again.

From sharpening edges of blades

to making certain the tool is still doing

the job it was designed to do, put all

your lawn and garden tools through a

thorough fall cleaning. Here are some

tips:

• Lawn mowers - Check your

owner’s manual for information

about sharpening the mower deck

blades and what to do with any un-

used gasoline before putting the

mower into storage. It’s a good idea to

keep the mower in a dry location

where moisture won’t collect and po-

tentially rust the blades.

• Hand trimmers - Hand clippers,

tree trimmers and saws all take a

beating during the summer. Check

these tools to make certain the han-

dles are still secure, the cutting blades

are sharp and the locking mecha-

nisms all work. If anything isn’t up to

par, replace the tool so you have it

ready for the first sign of spring.

• Chainsaws - These heavy ma-

chines get put through their paces,

and they can be taxing on people, too,

after extended use. If you’re ready to

upgrade your chainsaw, the Husq-

varna low-weight 436Li is quiet, easy

to operate and has the same power as

gas machines. The 536LiXP and the

T536LiXP models are also available,

and they come with low maintenance

and high-performance delivery. All

battery-operated chainsaws come

with two rechargeable batteries that

can be interchanged with any Husq-

varna hand tools you might already

have in your collection. The batteries

have a 40-minute charge time, help-

ing to keep the tools lightweight and

quiet.

• Weed trimmers - These tools are

invaluable for keeping the grasses and

weeds trimmed around trees and gar-

den edging. In the fall, be sure to re-

place the string so you’ll have a fresh

spool come spring. Also check the air

filter on the tool. If it is dirty, replace

the filter to allow your machine to

perform at its best.

• Hoses - When it’s time to store

your hoses for the winter, check all the

connections to make certain nothing

leaks; replace the connectors if you

notice water spraying or dribbling

from a connection. And if the hose it-

self is leaking, put it on your list to be

replaced. Make certain you’ve drained

all the water out before putting the

hoses away for winter. If you have a

hose cart, roll up the hose neatly with-

out any kinks. Otherwise, you can just

roll the hose into a neat pile of loops

for storage in a dry place.

With all of your lawn and garden

tools safely stored for the winter

months, you’ll know they’ll be ready

the minute you need them in the

spring.

Fall clean-up tips for your lawn and garden tools

Change-of-season checklist for lowering home energy costs

(BPT) - For many pests, including rodents, spiders and

cockroaches, the change in season indicates the need to

find shelter from the colder temperatures ahead. In some

cases, this shelter is the same place that keeps your fam-

ily warm and dry.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA)

reminds homeowners that fall pest-proofing is important

to prevent pests from making their home in yours.

Unwanted pests are more than a just nuisance in the

home. They pose serious health and property threats as

well. Rodents can gnaw through wires causing structural

damage, putting homes at risk for fire. Rodents also can

carry diseases such as salmonella and hantavirus. Ro-

dents can also cause secondary infestations by bringing

fleas, mites or ticks into homes.

Other pests like cockroaches are known to trigger al-

lergies and asthma symptoms - especially in young chil-

dren - and some species of spiders, if disturbed, will bite

in defense.

“Pest prevention is a year-round process, and in an-

ticipation of cooler weather, it’s time for a change in the

ways you protect your home from unwanted intruders,”

says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for

the NPMA. “Besides being a nuisance, pests can also pose

health and property threats. Homeowners must take

proactive measures to prevent pests from coming in-

doors.”

The NPMA recommends these fall pest-proofing tips

for homeowners:

• Screen attic vents and openings to chimneys and any

other areas where homes may be open to the outdoors.

• Keep basements, attics and crawl spaces well venti-

lated and dry. Pests are attracted to areas of moisture,

something they need to survive. Using dehumidifiers in

basements and garages will help keep these areas dry.

• Seal cracks and crevices. Don’t forget about the out-

side of the home. Use caulk and steel wool to seal any po-

tential entryways for pests. Pay close attention to where

utility pipes enter the structure. Mice can fit through

holes as small as the circumference of a dime.

• Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around

the home. These are easy ways to keep out not only pests,

but also cold air.

• Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house

and keep shrubbery in the yard trimmed back. Eliminat-

ing areas where pests can hide near your home can re-

duce the chance of them finding a way inside.

• Have a proper outdoor drainage system. Installing

gutters or repairing an existing system will help draw

water and moisture away from your home, preventing

any leaks or build up that might attract pests.

formation about common pests and how to prevent

them, visit www.pestworld.org.
